The mini PC must sustain your chosen encoder settings and stay powered and connected; “always-on” is an operating goal, not a guarantee of uninterrupted streaming or a single saved YouTube archive. Set up the stream, test it under its real workload, and arrange a local recording if you need a copy.
Before you start: check channel access and content rights
- Your YouTube channel must be verified and must not have a live-streaming restriction in the past 90 days. Enabling live streaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours.
- Use video and audio that you own or are authorized to stream. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a match can replace the stream with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. A license does not necessarily prevent interruption: where applicable, ask the rights holder to allowlist your channel through Content ID.
- Have a stable internet connection, enough local storage for any recording, and a mini PC that can sustain the selected resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a credential: do not publish or share it, and reset it if it is exposed.
Set up the mini PC and OBS
1. Install OBS Studio and check the workload
OBS supports Windows 10 and Windows 11, but operating-system compatibility is not a promise that a given computer can stream a particular workload. Resolution, frame rate, encoder choice, and scene complexity affect performance. Run OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard as a starting point, then test your actual video, audio, and scene at the output settings you intend to use. Do not treat the Windows compatibility floor as a mini-PC performance specification.
2. Create a YouTube stream and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream details. Keep the key private.
- Set up the video source and audio in OBS. Confirm that the audio meter responds and that the preview shows the intended content before starting the broadcast.
Exact labels and available setup options can change between OBS and YouTube versions. Follow the controls currently shown in your installation, and verify the preview in Live Control Room before going live.

Choose output settings the mini PC can sustain
For 1080p at 30 fps using H.264, YouTube’s guidance lists a recommended video bitrate of 5 Mbps and a minimum of 4 Mbps. These are video bitrates, not the total connection requirement: audio and other network traffic also use bandwidth. YouTube’s general encoder guidance includes CBR, H.264/H.265/AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds.

Do not select settings based solely on a short successful preview. A mini PC that can encode briefly may not sustain the same workload for a long session. Test with representative movement and audio, then reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if the encoder or connection cannot keep up.

Test upload capacity and verify the live feed
- Run an upload speed test on the mini PC’s actual network connection. Prefer a wired connection where practical.
- Leave at least 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate, as YouTube recommends. A connection disruption can break the stream even when the nominal speed appears sufficient.
- Start OBS streaming and wait for the YouTube Live Control Room preview. Check both the picture and sound before relying on the broadcast.
- While live, watch OBS statistics and YouTube’s stream health or messages. If you see dropped frames, encoding overload, or health warnings, lower the workload or address the network problem before leaving the stream unattended.
Make a long-running setup more resilient
A continuous stream depends on the whole chain: OBS, Windows, the mini PC, power, the network, and YouTube’s ingest. Updates or restarts, a power interruption, network loss, encoder failure, or heat under sustained load can interrupt it. The cited platform guidance does not establish a particular mini PC’s 24/7 reliability or duty-cycle rating, so treat a successful test as evidence for your setup—not a guarantee of uptime.
- Keep the mini PC powered and connected for the planned session, and review Windows power and update behavior so an idle or restart event does not surprise you.
- Check the machine’s temperature and performance during a sustained test. Thermal behavior varies by model and workload.
- If retaining the broadcast matters, configure OBS to record locally and confirm the recording file continues to grow. Make sure the storage location has enough free space.
- Monitor stream health after launch, especially when testing a new configuration or network.
Know YouTube’s archive and DVR limits
YouTube says a live stream that is less than 12 hours can be automatically archived. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive, and DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on very long streams. An always-on broadcast therefore does not ensure one uninterrupted replay or a complete YouTube archive. Keep a local recording if you need dependable access to the full content, and test the viewer experience for your stream’s DVR settings.
