How to Run a Continuous YouTube Stream of Nature Videos From a Playlist

Use OBS Studio to loop one local nature video or a VLC playlist into a YouTube live event. This guide covers setup, rights, testing, long-stream limits, and fixes.

To run a continuous YouTube stream of nature videos, make a local playlist in OBS Studio, send it to a YouTube live event, and keep the computer and encoder running. In OBS, use VLC Video for a playlist of multiple files and enable Loop Playlist. For one video, use Media Source and enable Loop. This creates a live broadcast from local media; simply playing a YouTube playlist in a browser does not turn it into a live stream.

Before you start

  • OBS Studio installed on a computer that can stay on and connected to the internet for the broadcast.
  • Nature video files accessible on that computer. For a multi-file playlist in OBS, install VLC as well; OBS’s VLC Video source depends on it.
  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream and a plan for handling the live event and its archive.
  • Permission to stream every video and audio track in the playlist.

YouTube says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Its guidance sets the minimum age to livestream at 16. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming well before the time you plan to broadcast. See YouTube’s live streaming tips and encoder setup guidance.

Prepare the nature-video playlist and rights

Choose files and decide the order

Put the video files you intend to stream in an accessible folder and decide whether their order matters. OBS’s VLC Video source can play multiple local files as a playlist; leave shuffle off for a fixed sequence. If you only need one video to repeat, a Media Source is simpler. These OBS controls play local files—they do not ingest a playlist of YouTube watch-page links.

Check footage and soundtrack permissions

Use material you created or have permission to livestream, including its soundtrack. Keep written records of licenses and permissions. A license for third-party material may not be enough to avoid an automated interruption: YouTube says the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Do not assume that a clip is safe just because it is online or described as royalty-free. Read YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.

Build a looping scene in OBS

For one repeating nature video

  1. Open OBS and select the scene you will use for the broadcast.
  2. In the Sources area, select + and add Media Source.
  3. Choose or browse to the video file.
  4. Enable Loop, then confirm the source settings.
  5. Check the preview to confirm the video fills the intended canvas and plays with the expected audio.

For several videos in a playlist

  1. Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS requires it for the VLC Video source.
  2. In the Sources area, select + and add VLC Video.
  3. Add the local video files to the playlist in the order you want.
  4. Enable Loop Playlist. Leave shuffle disabled if you need a predictable sequence.
  5. Inspect the preview and play through the transitions. Check that video and audio behave as expected between files.

OBS documents these source options in its Media Sources guide. Source controls and interface labels can change between software versions, so consult that guide if the options differ in your installed version.

Create the YouTube live event and connect OBS

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live, then create or schedule a live stream.
  2. In the Live Control Room, find the stream URL and stream key for the event.
  3. In OBS, open its streaming settings and enter the YouTube stream URL and stream key. Use the event’s own details and follow YouTube’s current encoder instructions at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
  4. Treat the stream key as a secret: it gives the encoder access to send video to the event. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the replacement.
  5. Start OBS output and wait for the Live Control Room preview. Check the video, playlist playback, transitions, and audio before announcing or confirming the broadcast.
  6. If the event is scheduled or does not start automatically, confirm Go Live in Live Control Room after checking the preview.

Test and monitor the broadcast

Test the entire playlist, not just its opening clip. Check for gaps, unexpected black frames, audio changes, and whether the computer and network remain stable. YouTube recommends monitoring the stream and keeping upload capacity above the total bitrate: its streaming tips recommend about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Keep OBS running and monitor the live event while the stream is active. When you are ready to end, stop the broadcast in YouTube Studio and stop OBS output. YouTube’s encoder guidance explains stream management and settings at Manage live stream settings.

Plan for very long streams and archives

YouTube automatically archives streams that are under 12 hours when they end. For streams longer than 12 hours, live DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable; do not rely on an indefinite broadcast to produce a complete, rewindable archive. If a dependable replay or simpler troubleshooting matters, consider ending the event and starting a separate session periodically. This is an operational choice, not a YouTube requirement. See YouTube’s encoder guidance and DVR guidance.
