To loop a prerecorded video on YouTube Live from Windows, use FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 to repeat the file and -re to send it at real-time speed. Encode it to settings YouTube accepts, then send it to the server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The command below is a configurable template, not a tested command; check the current stream settings and test the broadcast before relying on it.
Before you start
You need an eligible YouTube channel, FFmpeg available from Command Prompt, a prerecorded video, and that stream’s server URL and stream key. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time activation of live streaming may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the day you plan to broadcast. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming
- Have a Windows FFmpeg build that includes the
libx264encoder used in the example. Confirm it runs by enteringffmpeg -versionin Command Prompt; the command in this article assumes FFmpeg is on your PATH. - Know the video’s resolution, frame rate, and audio configuration so you can select appropriate output settings.
- Use a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream plus headroom. YouTube recommends keeping 20% of upload bandwidth available beyond the total stream bitrate. YouTube Help: Live streaming tips
Windows distribution and installation steps vary; the official guidance referenced here does not establish a current binary provider, so this guide does not recommend one.
Get the YouTube stream URL and key
- Open YouTube Studio and enter Live Control Room. Create or select the stream you intend to use.
- Copy the server URL and stream key displayed for that stream. Use the exact RTMPS destination supplied there; do not substitute a URL copied from another stream or assume a particular URL format.
- Keep the key private: YouTube describes stream keys as similar to a stream’s password and address. If it is exposed, reset it in the stream settings and update FFmpeg with the replacement. YouTube Help: Encoder setup
Choose settings that match the source and YouTube ingest
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, CBR, video codecs H.264, H.265, or AV1, audio codecs AAC or MP3, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Use YouTube’s current bitrate table for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate. For H.264 at 1080p30, the table recommends 5–14 Mbps; that range is not a universal target for other settings. The example below uses H.264 at 6 Mbps and assumes 30 fps, making -g 60 a two-second GOP. Change the GOP value if you choose another frame rate: for a two-second interval, the number of frames is twice the frames per second. Confirm the bitrate against YouTube’s current table rather than treating the example value as suitable for every file.
Run FFmpeg on Windows
- Open Command Prompt and confirm
ffmpeg -versionworks. Check that this build includeslibx264; availability depends on the build. - Copy the command below and replace the input path, server URL, and stream key with your own. Keep the video path in quotation marks if it contains spaces. Replace the bitrate and GOP settings if your chosen output differs from the example’s 1080p30 assumptions.

What the key options do
-rereads the file at its native rate, instead of sending it as quickly as the computer can process it.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely. It does not ensure the network or YouTube event remains available.-iidentifies the prerecorded input file.-c:v libx264encodes video as H.264, if the installed FFmpeg build provides that encoder.-b:v,-maxrate, and-bufsizeset video rate-control values in this example. The example’s fixed 6 Mbps values are not a recommendation for every resolution or frame rate.-g 60sets GOP spacing in frames. At 30 fps, 60 frames is two seconds; adjust it for the chosen frame rate.-c:a aac -b:a 128kencodes AAC audio. If the source has no audio stream, adapt the command rather than assuming it will produce the intended sound.-f flvselects the FLV output container commonly used for RTMP-family ingest. The destination should still be the RTMPS URL currently shown in Live Control Room.
Preview, start, and stop the broadcast
- Run the command and check FFmpeg’s console for connection or encoding errors.
- Wait for the incoming stream preview in Live Control Room. Check both picture and audio before the audience arrives. For a scheduled broadcast, use the controls in Live Control Room to start the event once the preview is present.
- Test representative motion and audio, then monitor stream health while broadcasting. YouTube specifically recommends testing before going live. YouTube Help: Encoder settings
- To finish, end the event in YouTube when applicable, then stop FFmpeg. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive behavior for longer streams. YouTube Help: Encoder setup
Looping boundaries, codecs, and audio
Repeating the input does not guarantee a seamless visual or audio boundary. A file that plays cleanly once may still show a pause, jump, or audible seam when it loops. Test the complete repeat in the actual stream. If the boundary is distracting, edit the source or re-encode it and test again.
Copying streams without re-encoding can save CPU only when codecs, timestamps, container behavior, and stream parameters all suit the ingest and loop. Compatibility is file-specific; do not assume copy mode will work reliably for every source. Transcoding as in the example is the more adaptable starting point.

Copyright and reused-content checks
Looping a recording does not change the rights attached to its video or audio. Before streaming, confirm you have permission to broadcast every component, including music, images, and footage. YouTube’s copyright and monetization rules may apply to prerecorded live content as well as ordinary uploads. Review the rights and channel-policy implications for your specific material; this FFmpeg workflow does not grant permission or guarantee monetization. Use the copyright safety checklist as a practical preflight, not as a substitute for rights clearance.
