To keep a YouTube stream live from a Windows PC, create a stream in YouTube Studio, enter its stream URL and key in an encoder such as OBS, then start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview. Choose a bitrate your measured upload connection can sustain, with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. For an actual 24/7 stream, the PC, power and internet connection must remain available; YouTube does not guarantee a complete archive for streams longer than 12 hours.
Before you set up the PC
Check channel eligibility first. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; its general eligibility information also says a streamer must be at least 16. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.
- Decide whether the goal is to keep a broadcast live, preserve a complete replay, or both. Those are separate: a stream can continue beyond the point at which YouTube may capture a full archive.
- Test the upload connection you will actually use. A shared network can leave less bandwidth for the streaming PC than a speed test suggests.
- Plan for interruptions. A Windows PC encoder relies on the computer, its power and local network remaining available. YouTube’s guidance does not promise recovery from local sleep, power loss or an ISP outage.
Set up YouTube Studio and the encoder
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes the workflow.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown in the stream settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to your stream. Reset it if it is exposed. Details are in YouTube’s live stream settings guide.
- Open OBS or another encoder. Select YouTube/RTMPS if offered; otherwise enter the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted form of RTMP. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Choose the video source and audio source, then set resolution, frame rate and bitrate in the encoder. For ordinary SDR streaming, use the general encoder recommendations below rather than HDR-specific guidance.
- Start streaming from the encoder, then wait for the Live Control Room preview and check stream-health messages. Start the broadcast from Live Control Room when the preview is ready. Keep checking audio, picture and network health while it runs. YouTube’s computer live-streaming tips cover preview and monitoring.
Choose a resolution and bitrate your connection can sustain
YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate settings are a starting point, not a guarantee that an internet connection in India—or anywhere else—can sustain them. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload headroom above the total stream bitrate. If other devices or applications use the same connection, available bandwidth can fall during a broadcast. The headroom values are calculated by dividing the listed stream bitrate by 0.8; they are practical minimums implied by YouTube’s 20% guidance, not separate YouTube bitrate recommendations. Use the current settings page when choosing a mode, and select a lower resolution or frame rate if the connection cannot sustain the necessary capacity consistently.

Key encoder settings
- Rate control: CBR for RTMP/RTMPS, as YouTube recommends.
- Keyframe interval: 2 seconds; do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Bitrate: match the chosen resolution and frame rate to the upload capacity that remains reliably available to the PC, with headroom.
- Ingest: choose RTMPS when the encoder offers it.
Keep the broadcast running—and understand the replay limit
An encoder on a Windows PC is not an unattended cloud service: if the computer stops, loses power or loses its internet connection, the outgoing stream can be interrupted. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health and testing a backup encoder if you have one; its guidance does not establish automatic recovery from a Windows sleep event, local power failure or local ISP interruption.
There is also an archive trade-off. YouTube says a live stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all, and recommends making a local recording as a backup. - If preserving the entire replay matters, make a local recording and plan deliberate sessions under 12 hours rather than relying on one uninterrupted broadcast to produce a complete YouTube archive.
- If viewers need to rewind, do not assume DVR will remain available for the whole duration of an unusually long stream.
- A wired network connection may be a useful troubleshooting option, but YouTube’s cited guidance does not require Ethernet.
Troubleshoot common interruptions
