To make a 24/7 YouTube lofi radio stream with OBS and VLC, add a VLC Video source to an OBS scene, load music files you have permission to stream, enable Loop Playlist, then connect OBS to a YouTube stream using its server URL and stream key. The playlist repeats when it ends; it does not keep your computer, OBS, internet connection, or YouTube broadcast running if any of them fail.
What you need before you start
- A computer that can run OBS continuously, with stable power and internet access.
- OBS Studio and VLC installed. If OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC; OBS requires VLC to display the VLC Video source. OBS Media Sources
- Artwork or animation for the visual, plus audio files you have the rights to use in a live broadcast.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guide.
There is no single reliable hardware or internet-speed minimum for every lofi stream. What is sufficient depends on your resolution, encoder settings, media, operating system, and how much interruption risk you can accept.
Set up the looping stream in OBS

Install and open OBS and VLC
Install matching 64-bit or 32-bit versions where applicable. Open OBS and create a scene for the broadcast; for example, name it “Lofi Radio.”

Add the visual
Add your cover art, animation, or other visual as a source in the scene. Arrange it in the preview so it fills the canvas as intended. A static image can serve as the visual while the playlist supplies the audio.

Add the playlist
In the Sources panel, select + → VLC Video. If VLC Video is missing, check that VLC is installed and its architecture matches OBS. Add the files in the playback order you want, then enable Loop Playlist. Choose whether to shuffle if you want a different order on each pass; OBS documents both playlist looping and shuffle for this source. OBS Media Sources

Check source visibility and audio
Keep the VLC Video source active in the scene and verify its visibility behavior; hiding a source can affect playback. Watch the OBS audio mixer while the playlist plays, confirm that the intended audio output is included in the stream, and listen to the preview. Make sure the music is audible without unwanted desktop sounds.

Connect OBS to YouTube
In YouTube Studio, create a live stream or open one you have already set up. In OBS, open Settings → Stream and enter the server URL and stream key shown for that YouTube stream. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses those details; treat the key as a password and do not publish or share it. Follow the current YouTube setup flow for starting the encoder and going live. Test before announcing it
Run a short private or unlisted broadcast first. Check the incoming YouTube preview for picture and sound, listen for clean audio, and confirm that one playlist item transitions to the next and loops as expected. Review the live dashboard for ingest warnings or dropped frames before sharing the public link.

Keep the broadcast available—not just the playlist
Loop Playlist controls what OBS plays after the playlist ends. It does not restart OBS after a crash, restore a failed connection, keep a computer powered, or make YouTube’s ingest service continuously available. For a local setup, plan who will notice an interruption and how they will restart the encoder or resolve a power, computer, or network problem. Test that recovery procedure before relying on the stream.
YouTube supports encrypted RTMPS ingestion. Use the current YouTube/OBS preset where available rather than changing protocols without a specific need. YouTube also documents HLS ingestion, which has higher latency than RTMP and additional segment and playlist requirements; use it only when your encoder workflow calls for HLS-specific capabilities. Clear music rights before going live
You are responsible for obtaining the rights needed to use live content on YouTube, including music rights. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches and may replace the broadcast with a placeholder, interrupt it, or terminate it. Even licensed music can be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel in Content ID. YouTube: Copyright issues with live streams · YouTube Livestream terms and conditions
- Confirm permission for both the sound recording and the underlying composition.
- Check that permission covers your territories and the specific uses you intend: live broadcast, any archive or replay, and monetization if applicable.
- Ask the rights holder whether your channel needs to be allowlisted in Content ID.
- Do not assume a track is safe because a download page calls it “copyright free” or because you plan to credit the creator.
YouTube’s channel monetization rules are a separate test from copyright permission. Permission alone does not guarantee Partner Program eligibility: YouTube says repetitive or mass-produced material can be ineligible and gives collections of songs from different artists as an example that may fail monetization even when permission exists. Review the current YouTube channel monetization policies before building a channel around looping music.

Plan for the archive length
YouTube’s encoder guidance says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A single uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast exceeds that stated duration, so do not count on it becoming one complete archived video. If preserving the material matters, check the current Live Control Room behavior and plan separate recordings or shorter broadcasts. YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder
Fix common OBS and YouTube problems
