One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchYou can run a 24/7 lofi livestream from a DigitalOcean VPS by playing a prepared video or audio-visual loop in encoder software and sending it to YouTube’s Live Control Room with your server URL and stream key. The hard parts are not simply starting the encoder: you need worldwide rights for the music and visuals, enough outbound bandwidth for the chosen bitrate, a tested recovery plan, and a decision about YouTube’s 12-hour archive limit. No specific Droplet size is established as sufficient for every encoder and media file, so test your actual setup before relying on it.
What you need before you start
- A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. YouTube’s eligibility guidance says the channel must have no live-stream restriction in the previous 90 days, and streamers must be at least 16. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned launch.
- A DigitalOcean Droplet with enough CPU, memory, storage, and outbound transfer for the encoder and media you plan to run. The right size depends on whether you encode or stream-copy, and on resolution, frame rate, codec, and any filters. The figures below are not a minimum-instance recommendation.
- Encoder software that can play your prepared loop and send a live feed to YouTube. YouTube lists OBS as open-source encoder software; its documentation does not establish a particular OBS playlist setup, FFmpeg command, supervisor, or restart script as an officially supported 24/7 configuration.
- Music and visual assets licensed for continuous worldwide livestreaming, plus records of those rights.
- A way to monitor the VPS, network transmission, encoder, and YouTube stream health, and a plan for recovering from failures.
Clear the music and artwork rights first
Use music and artwork you created or have licensed for continuous live streaming in the territories you intend to reach. A license for an upload, a single video, or another use may not cover a continuous livestream. Keep the license terms and proof of permission; YouTube’s live-stream terms make the content provider responsible for having the necessary rights, including music rights involving artists, labels, publishers, and other rights participants.
A Content ID claim can affect a stream or its availability and monetization by region. A stream that passes a test without a claim is not proof of worldwide rights or a promise about future claims. YouTube’s reused-content monetization policy is separate from copyright permission and applies channel-wide. Permission to use a track therefore does not guarantee monetization approval. Describe your original music, artwork, sequencing, and other creative contribution accurately, and do not promise viewers or collaborators that the channel will be monetized.
Create the YouTube broadcast and connect the encoder
- Enable live streaming early. Verify your channel and complete YouTube’s live-stream activation process. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation.
- Create a broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or configure the stream. Retrieve the YouTube server URL and stream key for the encoder.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password. Do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or place it in a publicly accessible file. If it is exposed, replace or rotate it in YouTube Studio before relying on the stream again.
- Configure your encoder on the VPS. Add the server URL and stream key, select the prepared lofi media, and set the output profile. If you use a playlist or a pre-rendered loop, test that it advances or repeats as intended; the exact playout mechanism is an implementation choice, not a YouTube guarantee.
- Start privately or run a representative test. Check that audio and video arrive, inspect YouTube’s stream health, and confirm the loop behaves as expected before announcing a permanent channel feed.
YouTube accepts encoder software or hardware and recommends RTMPS as a secure ingest option. Make sure the URL and key you enter correspond to the selected YouTube stream. Do not assume that an encoder process running on the VPS means YouTube is receiving a healthy broadcast.

Choose an output profile your VPS can sustain
Use a modest profile first, then test it with the actual music visuals, motion, encoder, and VPS. YouTube’s current recommendations retrieved in 2026 include these H.264, AV1, and H.265 examples for 30 fps:
| Output | Codec | YouTube recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | H.264 | 6 Mbps |
| 720p30 | AV1 or H.265 | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | H.264 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps |
These are recommended ingestion settings, not a guarantee that a given Droplet can encode them reliably or that every visual needs them. A bitrate minimum is not a quality target for every type of content. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. It also recommends testing the upload bitrate, using representative content, and monitoring stream health.

If your encoder can stream-copy a pre-encoded file, its CPU demand may differ from real-time encoding; filters and transcoding can change the load as well. The source guidance does not establish which method or Droplet size will work for your media. Watch CPU, memory, dropped frames, network output, and YouTube’s health indicators during a sustained test, then adjust quality or compute based on what you observe.
Estimate DigitalOcean transfer before choosing a Droplet
For a continuously transmitted stream, bitrate drives outbound transfer whether or not anyone is watching. At a constant 6 Mbps, the video payload alone is about 64.8 GB per day and 1.944 TB over 30 days in decimal units. That calculation excludes protocol overhead, so real transfer can be higher.

| DigitalOcean Basic Droplet example | Monthly transfer listed | Listed monthly starting price |
|---|---|---|
| 512 MiB plan | 500 GiB | $4/month |
| 1 GiB plan | 1,000 GiB | $6/month |
| Additional outbound transfer | — | $0.01 per GiB |
DigitalOcean’s pricing and transfer documentation, checked on 2026-10-03, lists these figures; rates and allowances can change. At 6 Mbps, the calculated 30-day payload exceeds 1,000 GiB, so a single feed at that bitrate can exceed the 1 GiB Basic example’s allowance. DigitalOcean pools transfer at the team level, which can affect the actual overage. Check the current Droplet and account billing details, and calculate your expected use at the bitrate you select rather than comparing only the VM’s base price.
Plan for failures and YouTube’s archive limit
Recovery is an operational task
A 24/7 design needs more than an encoder left running. Monitor the encoder process, CPU and memory, outbound network activity, disk space for assets and logs, and YouTube stream health. A process supervisor or scheduled check may help restart a failed process, but test how the chosen encoder behaves after a failure, including whether the YouTube session and stream key remain usable. No particular restart script, uptime level, or no-gap recovery method is established here.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Test the failure cases you can anticipate: encoder exit, VPS restart, network interruption, and an expired or replaced stream configuration. Record the recovery steps somewhere accessible if the VPS is unavailable. A restarted encoder may restore the feed, but it should not be presented as guaranteed uninterrupted service.
Decide whether automatic VOD archives matter
YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not expect a single continuous stream longer than 12 hours to create an automatic archive. If you need VODs, plan broadcast sessions under 12 hours and decide how you will start replacement sessions. A session transition can interrupt viewers; a gap-free handoff has not been established as a reliable procedure.

Common problems and what to check
- YouTube does not receive the feed: confirm live streaming has been enabled, the broadcast is configured in the Live Control Room, and the encoder has the matching server URL and stream key. Check that the encoder is actually sending data and that the stream key has not been changed or exposed.
- The stream starts but reports poor health or drops frames: compare actual outbound throughput with the selected bitrate, inspect CPU and memory use, and test a lower resolution or bitrate. Verify stability with representative media rather than relying on a short idle test.
- The encoder stops and the channel goes offline: inspect encoder and system logs, available disk space, resource pressure, and network interruptions. Test a restart process and verify that it reconnects to the intended YouTube broadcast before depending on it.
- The feed runs but no automatic archive appears: check the session duration. YouTube’s automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not a single continuous stream exceeding that duration.
- A track is claimed, blocked, or unavailable in some regions: review the license for the specific live use and territory, then check the claim’s regional policy. A lack of a claim during an earlier test does not establish rights or prevent a later claim.
- The VPS bill is higher than the base plan: check outbound transfer across the DigitalOcean team, the stream bitrate, and the billing period. The base Droplet price alone does not include unlimited streaming transfer.
