Run FFmpeg as a systemd service with a restart policy so Linux can launch a new FFmpeg process if the current one exits. Then check YouTube Live Control Room: a local restart shows only that FFmpeg restarted, not that YouTube resumed the intended broadcast or that viewers are receiving healthy video and audio.
What a restart policy fixes—and what it does not
Recovery has two layers. A process supervisor such as systemd can restart FFmpeg after it exits. YouTube Live Control Room is where you confirm whether the encoder has reconnected and YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. These are separate checks: a process can restart locally while the source remains unavailable or YouTube ingest remains unhealthy.
- FFmpeg exited: a service manager can start it again.
- FFmpeg is running but media has stalled: a restart-on-exit policy alone may not detect the problem; monitor progress or source and ingest health.
- The input source failed: diagnose the camera, file, or other input separately from YouTube output.
- YouTube ingest is unhealthy: inspect FFmpeg’s output logs and Live Control Room rather than assuming a local restart fixed the remote stream.
A Raspberry Pi-oriented FFmpeg project documents running the encoder under systemd and using progress supervision: project documentation. Treat it as an implementation example, not an official YouTube recommendation or a universal service configuration.
Diagnose the failure before changing retry settings
- Check the service state and recent logs. Use
systemctl statusfor the service name you configured andjournalctl -u SERVICE_NAMEto inspect its journal. ReplaceSERVICE_NAMEwith your unit’s name. Determine whether FFmpeg exited, failed to launch, or is still marked active. Do not share logs that expose your stream key. - Check the input under the service’s conditions. Verify that the source is reachable and that the FFmpeg command works under the same service account and environment. A command that works in your interactive shell can still fail as a service if it depends on a different user, environment variable, file path, or device permission.
- Check YouTube’s view of the stream. Open Live Control Room and look for the encoder preview and stream health. YouTube’s encoder workflow describes previewing and monitoring the stream before and during a broadcast: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Configure systemd to restart FFmpeg after an exit
Put the working FFmpeg command in a systemd service rather than relying on a shell session or terminal window to stay open. The unit needs the correct executable path, arguments, service user, working directory, and any environment the command depends on. Choose a restart policy and delay appropriate to your installation; add restart limits or backoff so a permanent error does not trigger a rapid, endless loop.

There is no safe universal unit to copy without knowing the Pi’s operating system and systemd version, the source, the exact FFmpeg command, the service account, and the desired retry behavior. Check the relevant directives against the systemd documentation for the version installed on the Pi. After editing a unit, reload systemd, start or restart the service, and inspect its status and journal. Enable the service at boot if it should start automatically after the Pi restarts.
Once the service starts, test its local recovery by deliberately stopping the FFmpeg process and confirming that systemd starts it again. That test establishes only that the process supervisor works; it does not establish a healthy YouTube ingest, continuous audio and video, or backup-encoder failover.

Use FFmpeg reconnect options only for the failures they cover
FFmpeg’s reconnect option is documented among its HTTP protocol options. The documentation says it can “Reconnect automatically when disconnected before EOF is hit”: FFmpeg Protocols Documentation. That behavior applies to the documented HTTP input case; it does not relaunch FFmpeg after the process exits and is not a universal retry control for YouTube RTMP or RTMPS output.
If FFmpeg remains active while progress stops, process-exit supervision may not be enough. Add an appropriate progress timeout or monitor the source and ingest state. The Raspberry Pi-oriented project describes progress timeout and source probing as separate controls, but the right thresholds depend on the source and deployment.

Check the YouTube encoder connection and stream settings
If FFmpeg restarted but YouTube does not show the expected preview or healthy ingest, verify the configured server URL and stream key. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address” and documents how to manage or reset them: Manage live stream settings. If you reset a key, update the encoder configuration as well. Keep the key private, including in logs and shared command examples.
YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted ingest. HLS is a separate ingest choice for supported use cases, including HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP; YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency and specifies segment and playlist constraints. Switching ingest protocol does not replace supervising FFmpeg locally. For HLS, the documented segment duration is 1–4 seconds and the rolling playlist should have no more than 5 outstanding segments: Use HLS ingest for live streaming.

For encoder configuration, YouTube’s settings guidance lists a maximum frame rate of 60 fps and recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding 4 seconds: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions. These are encoder settings, not crash-recovery guarantees.
Test recovery end to end
- Use a YouTube test stream before relying on the setup for a scheduled or continuous broadcast. Follow YouTube’s test-stream guidance and confirm the selected stream settings: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Test a representative source with motion and audio. Confirm that the preview moves, sound is present, and Live Control Room reports acceptable stream health.
- Cause a controlled FFmpeg exit and check that systemd restarts it. Then verify the YouTube preview and broadcast state again; do not treat the local service status as proof that the remote stream recovered.
- If you configure a backup encoder, test its failover independently and confirm that the viewer-facing player changes over as expected. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends testing a configured backup encoder: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Troubleshoot common recovery problems
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
| The service fails immediately or repeatedly restarts | Command, paths, permissions, service user, environment, or source availability | Read the service journal; run the command under the service account and correct the first startup error before increasing retries. |
| systemd says FFmpeg is active, but the picture is frozen | Stalled input or media progress | Check the source and FFmpeg progress. Consider progress-timeout or health monitoring; restarting only after process exit will not catch every stall. |
| FFmpeg is running, but YouTube has no healthy preview | Output connection, server URL, stream key, or remote ingest health | Inspect FFmpeg logs and Live Control Room. Confirm the current URL and key, and update FFmpeg if the key was reset. |
| The stream returns locally but the expected broadcast is missing | Remote broadcast state or ingest recovery | Confirm the intended broadcast in Live Control Room. A local process restart does not prove the same YouTube broadcast or watch URL resumed. |
| A retry loop continues during a permanent error | Restart policy and retry limits | Use an appropriate delay, backoff, or restart limit for the installed systemd version, then fix the underlying error rather than allowing rapid repeated launches. |
Understand what happens to the YouTube archive
YouTube Help says, “All streams under 12 hours will be automatically archived,” on its encoder-based live-stream workflow page: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. This is not a guarantee that every FFmpeg restart preserves one uninterrupted broadcast or produces a single archive in every configuration. Check the broadcast state and resulting archive in YouTube Studio.
