You can show the same incoming feed in two simultaneous YouTube live videos by binding one YouTube liveStream resource to two liveBroadcast resources. If you mean two different shows—or different settings for each broadcast—you need separate stream resources and separate encoder outputs. YouTube documents the first workflow; the reviewed official guidance does not establish that any Raspberry Pi can reliably encode two independent feeds, so test your exact board and workload before relying on it.

First decide what “two streams” means

YouTube treats the incoming feed from an encoder and the public live video (broadcast) as distinct resources. That distinction determines whether a Raspberry Pi needs to send one feed or produce two.

What you want YouTube setup What the Pi must do
Two live video pages showing the same picture and sound Bind one incoming liveStream to two simultaneous liveBroadcast resources. YouTube’s API documentation describes this as “Thus, you are streaming the same content to two separate videos at the same time.” YouTube Live Streaming API documentation. Send one encoded feed. The broadcasts can have separate lifecycle controls, but their incoming program content is the same.
Two different shows, or broadcasts needing different encoder settings Create a separate liveStream resource for each broadcast and configure the encoder for each one. YouTube identifies this as a possible fit for recurring simultaneous shows that cannot share settings. YouTube Live Streaming API documentation. Produce and send separate outputs. Whether a particular Pi can sustain the required encoding workload depends on its model, source, resolution, frame rate, audio chain and measured network capacity.

Do not treat one YouTube ingestion connection as a container for two video tracks. YouTube’s API health diagnostics identify multiple video streams inside one ingestion stream as an error. YouTube LiveStreams resource documentation.

Set up two live videos from the same feed

This is the practical route when both YouTube pages should show exactly the same program. YouTube’s documented pattern uses one incoming stream and multiple broadcasts; it does not require the Pi to encode the feed twice.

  1. Create two broadcasts. In YouTube’s live workflow or through the Live Streaming API, create the two live broadcast records and set their titles, schedules and other broadcast details as needed.
  2. Create or select one incoming stream. In the Live Control Room, use the stream credentials associated with the intended encoder feed. Keep the stream key private; do not put it in a public command, post or article.
  3. Bind both broadcasts to that same stream. In the API workflow, bind each liveBroadcast to the same liveStream. The API documentation is the reference for the resource and binding workflow: YouTube Live Streaming API.
  4. Start the encoder once. Send the source feed to YouTube using the stream credentials shown in your own Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube is receiving the feed before taking the broadcasts live.
  5. Set each broadcast live and monitor it independently. Both live videos can display the incoming content. YouTube’s documented example allows the second event to be marked complete when it ends while the continuous broadcast keeps running.

This arrangement shares the actual video and audio. It does not create a second camera angle, independent commentary track, separate edit or different resolution for the second broadcast.

For two different feeds, plan for separate outputs

When the programs differ, create a distinct YouTube stream resource for each broadcast and configure the encoder to send the corresponding output. YouTube documents the separate-resource approach, but its API documentation does not provide a Raspberry Pi command for producing two independent broadcasts. The cited Raspberry Pi guide also does not benchmark a Pi running two real-time encodes. YouTube Live Streaming API; Raspberry Pi camera software documentation.

Before committing to a live schedule, test the actual combination of board, input source, encode path, resolution, frame rate, audio processing and sustained upload. A successful short preview is not proof that the same setup will remain stable over a long broadcast. The available official guidance supplies platform settings, not a universal safe bitrate or a maximum number of feeds for a Pi.

  • Count encoder outputs, not just YouTube pages. One shared feed for two broadcasts is materially different from two independent encodes.
  • Check whether the Pi’s encode path supports the chosen codec and settings for the specific model.
  • Measure sustained upstream capacity while both intended outputs are running, leaving headroom for network variation.
  • Watch CPU and system stability under the real workload; do not assume a setting demonstrated on one Pi generation applies to another.

Choose Pi camera encoding by board generation

Raspberry Pi’s official camera streaming guide gives different sample GStreamer encoding elements by generation. For Pi 4B or earlier, its sample uses v4l2h264enc. For Pi 5, the guide says to replace that element with x264enc speed-preset=1 threads=1, which is software x264 encoding. Raspberry Pi camera software documentation.

Do not infer H.264 hardware encoding on Pi 5 from its H.265 hardware decoding support: decoding and encoding are different operations. These sample pipelines are generation-specific examples, not proof that the board can encode two independent YouTube feeds at a particular resolution or frame rate.

The same Raspberry Pi guide mentions third-party streaming servers including MediaMTX, MistServer and go2rtc for ingesting camera streams and re-streaming them to clients. They may suit local distribution or a broader workflow, but their mention does not remove YouTube’s distinction between shared and separate stream resources, or establish that two Pi encodes are sustainable.

Use YouTube-compatible encoder settings

YouTube’s current Help guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, recommends RTMPS—the encrypted form of RTMP—and these general encoder settings. They are platform recommendations, not performance guarantees for Raspberry Pi hardware. YouTube Help: encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.

Setting YouTube guidance How to apply it on a Pi
Connection RTMPS is recommended. Use the RTMPS ingest option and credentials shown for your stream in the Live Control Room.
Video codec and frame rate H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1; up to 60 fps. Choose only a codec your software and board’s encode path can actually produce at the desired workload.
Bitrate control Constant bitrate (CBR). Set CBR and select a bitrate appropriate to the source and target output; measure sustained upload rather than assuming a Pi-wide safe value.
Keyframes A two-second interval is recommended; do not exceed four seconds. Set the encoder’s keyframe interval accordingly and check YouTube’s stream health if it reports a keyframe issue.
Audio AAC or MP3. For stereo, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps; for 5.1 audio, its encoder settings page lists 48 kHz and 384 Kbps. Match the audio channel layout and encoder output to the intended broadcast; avoid accidentally sending inconsistent audio settings between primary and backup feeds.

The LiveStreams API accepts standard inbound resolution values from 240p through 2160p and includes a variable-detection setting; its frame-rate choices include 30 fps, 60 fps or variable. YouTube LiveStreams resource documentation. These are supported API values, not evidence that a particular Pi can encode them—especially for two different feeds.

Diagnose ingest errors before blaming the Pi

YouTube exposes stream status and health diagnostics through the Live Control Room and LiveStreams API. A stream can be active and receiving data, or ready but not currently receiving data; inspect its actual status before changing hardware or rebuilding the workflow. YouTube LiveStreams resource documentation.

Symptom or diagnostic What to check Likely corrective action
Stream is ready but not receiving data Whether the encoder has started, is using the intended stream credentials and is connecting to the selected ingest endpoint. Start or restart the encoder with the matching credentials and endpoint; keep the key private while checking it in the Live Control Room.
Unsupported codec The codec actually being sent versus the codec chosen in the encoder. Select a YouTube-supported codec that the Pi’s encoding software can produce.
Keyframe interval too long Encoder keyframe cadence. Set a two-second interval where supported and do not exceed YouTube’s four-second limit.
Insufficient incoming video Whether the encoder is producing a stable video signal at the configured resolution and rate. Confirm the source and encoder output; if the Pi cannot sustain the workload, lower the output demands or simplify the production setup.
Multiple video streams in one ingestion stream Whether the encoder is mistakenly sending multiple video tracks over a single YouTube stream resource. Send one video stream per ingestion resource. For separate programs, configure separate stream resources; for duplicate broadcasts, bind multiple broadcasts to one shared feed.
Primary and backup settings mismatch Whether backup and primary feeds use matching audio/video settings. Align the feeds’ settings before using the backup workflow.
