For most new Raspberry Pi setups, choose the Raspberry Pi 5. It has a quad-core 2.4GHz CPU, Gigabit Ethernet and 4K HEVC decoding, making it a flexible base for playing prerecorded video and sending it to YouTube. The important caveat: Pi 5 has no hardware H.264 encoder, so an H.264 stream must be encoded by its CPU. A Pi 4 Model B can be a better fit when your chosen software can use its hardware H.264 encoder.
If you want a YouTube stream that keeps running without a computer at home, StreamNeo is the cloud alternative to consider first: upload your video, add your YouTube stream key and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, supports the file’s uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
Which Raspberry Pi model should you choose?
Raspberry Pi 5: best flexible default
Pi 5 is the stronger general-purpose starting point when you want a current board and may need to decode higher-resolution source video or software-encode H.264. Raspberry Pi’s 2026 H.264 paper reports real-time 1080p30 software encoding in its tested configurations. Its low-latency configuration used as little as 60% of one CPU core; a higher-quality preset used approximately 100–150% of one core. Those are vendor test results, not a guarantee for every file, encoder build or continuous setup. See Raspberry Pi documentation and the Raspberry Pi 2026 H.264 paper.
Pi 5 does not have a hardware H.264 encoder. If your workflow requires H.264 output, the board’s CPU does that work. Whether it has enough headroom depends on the source, encoder settings, software and any additional processing such as overlays.

Raspberry Pi 4 Model B: consider it for hardware H.264 encoding
Pi 4 Model B has a hardware H.264 encoder, which may suit a workflow that specifically needs H.264 and software that can use the hardware. That distinction alone does not prove Pi 4 will be faster or more reliable end to end; check support in the exact application and test your actual video. Raspberry Pi’s technical discussion distinguishes Pi 4’s encoder hardware from Pi 5’s lack of it: Raspberry Pi technical discussion.
Make the file and software the deciding factors
First establish whether the video can be passed through or remuxed into a format YouTube accepts, or must be transcoded. Transcoding increases the importance of encoder support and CPU headroom. YouTube accepts H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 for ingest, but that does not mean a particular Pi application can use each codec or loop and reconnect unattended. Do not choose a board by decoder or encoder specifications alone: check the source file, the software’s codec support, and its loop and recovery behavior.
What you need for a Pi-based 24/7 stream
- Board: Pi 5 is a flexible default. The 4GB model is a reasonable starting point for one stream, but memory needs depend on the operating system and application.
- Power: Raspberry Pi recommends its 27W USB-C supply for Pi 5 (5V/5A). With a 3A supply, downstream USB current is limited to 600mA, which matters if you attach storage or other peripherals. See Raspberry Pi power guidance.
- Cooling: Active cooling helps Pi 5 perform best, particularly under heavy load. A compatible fan case or active cooler is sensible for sustained encoding, but the need depends on the workload. The official case has an integrated fan. See Raspberry Pi 5 case.
- Storage: Pi 5 has a microSD slot and USB 3 ports. Size storage for your local video library. If using a USB drive, account for its power draw; a powered hub is recommended when attached devices exceed the board’s power budget. See Raspberry Pi USB guidance.
- Network: Use wired Gigabit Ethernet if practical for a fixed appliance. YouTube advises testing upload speed and selecting a bitrate the connection can sustain.
Configure YouTube and the encoder
Confirm the channel can go live
YouTube’s encoder setup guide says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or configure the stream and obtain its stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your stream. YouTube’s guide covers the setup and preview process: YouTube encoder setup.

Choose an ingest protocol and video settings
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video, up to 60fps. It recommends RTMPS to encrypt the feed to Google’s servers. Use constant bitrate (CBR) and set a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. The encoder must support the protocol and settings you select. See YouTube live encoder settings.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFor H.264, YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrates include 5 Mbps at 1080p30 and 6 Mbps at 1080p60. These are YouTube recommendations, not Raspberry Pi performance measurements. Use the recommendation for your selected resolution and frame rate, confirm that your software can produce it, and leave upload headroom rather than running the connection at its limit.
Preview before relying on the stream
- Enter the YouTube stream URL and key in your encoder application. Do not share screenshots or logs that expose the key.
- Start the encoder and wait for YouTube Live Control Room to show the incoming feed.
- Preview the video and inspect stream health before making the broadcast public. Check that audio, resolution, frame rate and playback are as expected.
- Test a full loop and simulate a network interruption if the software supports it. Confirm that it resumes the file and reconnects to YouTube as intended.
Plan for looping and a broadcast longer than 12 hours
A Pi recommendation cannot guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast. Reliability depends on the exact file, operating system, encoder application and version, looping method, reconnect behavior, cooling, power and network. Run an end-to-end soak test with the complete setup before depending on it; verify that the video loops and that the stream recovers after a connection drop.

There is also an archive limitation: YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a complete replay matters, keep a local recording and do not rely on one uninterrupted day-long broadcast for the archive. Read YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.
Copyright, permissions and reused content
Use video and audio you have the right to broadcast. A video being prerecorded, or available online, does not itself grant permission to restream it. YouTube’s copyright systems and live-stream policies may affect a broadcast; review the platform’s current requirements before scheduling a long-running stream. For a practical preflight, use the copyright safety checklist. A stream’s compliance with copyright rules is separate from whether its technical setup works.
Common problems and what to check
The Pi cannot keep up with the encode
Check whether the application is transcoding rather than passing through or remuxing, and whether it is using hardware or software encoding as expected. Lowering output resolution or frame rate can reduce the workload; alternatively, choose a codec and settings the software can handle. Pi 5’s published 1080p30 figures apply only to Raspberry Pi’s tested configurations, not every media file or encoder.

YouTube reports poor stream health or buffering
Check the wired connection, actual sustained upload capacity, selected bitrate and encoder output. Confirm that the encoder is using CBR and a keyframe interval within YouTube’s guidance. Reduce the bitrate or output demands if the connection cannot sustain the chosen settings.
The board becomes unstable under sustained load
Check that the Pi 5 has an appropriate power supply and adequate cooling. USB storage can add power demand; use a powered hub if peripherals exceed the board’s available USB power budget.
The video stops after one play, or the stream does not recover
Looping and reconnect behavior are application-specific. Check the encoder’s repeat/loop option and reconnect settings, then test a full playback cycle and a simulated interruption. Do not assume YouTube or the Raspberry Pi board will restart the local file or reconnect on its own.
