Raspberry Pi YouTube Live Stream Buffering: Check Upload Speed and FFmpeg Buffering

Find whether Raspberry Pi YouTube live buffering comes from upload capacity, encoding, viewer latency, or the wrong FFmpeg buffer setting.

If your Raspberry Pi YouTube live stream buffers, first find out whether the problem is the Pi encoding, the connection uploading, or playback on viewers’ devices. Measure stable upload speed against the stream’s total bitrate, then check YouTube Live Control Room stream health. Increasing an FFmpeg buffer cannot create upload capacity, and the right buffer depends on the protocol and direction in your command.

First identify where the buffering happens

“Buffering” can describe different failures, so note who sees it and what YouTube reports before changing settings.

  • Encoder or ingest problem: YouTube Live Control Room reports stream-health warnings, or the incoming feed itself is interrupted. Check whether the Pi can sustain the encode, whether upload capacity is sufficient, and whether the connection is stable.
  • Viewer-only playback stalls: YouTube reports a healthy incoming feed, but viewers experience pauses. Check the stream’s latency mode and viewer playback conditions; do not assume an FFmpeg sender buffer is the cause.

Keep Live Control Room’s stream health and messages open during a test. YouTube’s published guidance distinguishes stream delivery from viewer latency, and notes that “Lower latency may mean more playback buffering.” YouTube encoder and stream-health guidance · YouTube latency guidance

Check upload speed against the whole stream

A live encoder sends video out, so download speed is not the number to compare. Measure upload performance under realistic conditions, including the times when other people or devices normally share the connection. A brief speed-test peak does not establish sustained capacity.

  1. Find the configured video bitrate and audio bitrate in the encoder settings or FFmpeg command. Include any other stream traffic that uses the same connection.
  2. Measure upload speed repeatedly while the network is under typical household or venue load.
  3. Compare the stable result with the combined bitrate. YouTube says the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% room: “Leave a bit of room (20% recommended).” Treat that as YouTube’s recommendation, not a guarantee for every network.

For example, a configured stream totaling 6 Mbps needs more than 6 Mbps of usable upload capacity; applying YouTube’s recommended headroom means planning for roughly 7.5 Mbps or more under the same conditions. A shared connection or brief disruption can still affect delivery. YouTube’s upload bandwidth and network guidance

Choose a target YouTube recommends—and test what the Pi can sustain

YouTube’s live encoder guide lists the following H.264 bitrate figures. They are ingest recommendations, not a promise that a particular Raspberry Pi, camera, operating system, or FFmpeg build can encode each mode continuously.

Output Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube’s published H.264 live-stream settings, not VOD upload targets. The table’s 720p60 recommendation is also 8 Mbps. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a 2-second keyframe interval, not exceeding 4 seconds. Run a preflight with audio and movement resembling the real stream, then monitor stream health. YouTube’s live encoder settings

If the connection cannot reliably carry the configured total bitrate plus headroom, lower bitrate, resolution, or frame rate, or address the network constraint. If upload is sufficient but the Pi cannot sustain the selected encode, a lower output target is a reasonable diagnostic; the available evidence does not establish a universal resolution or frame-rate ceiling for an unspecified Pi. Raspberry Pi’s H.264 performance note evaluates software libx264 configurations on Raspberry Pi 5-series computers, including a low-latency configuration intended for real-time uses such as live camera streaming. It does not validate every camera, workload, temperature, or FFmpeg setup. Raspberry Pi’s Pi 5-series H.264 encoding note

Set latency for the audience, not as a bandwidth fix

YouTube offers normal, low, and ultra-low latency modes. Normal latency has the lowest viewer buffering risk. Low latency is intended for limited interaction; ultra-low latency is intended for real-time interaction and may increase viewer buffering. Low and ultra-low latency do not support 4K. If ingest is healthy but viewers stall, review the latency choice and ask affected viewers to check their network and playback conditions. Latency mode is one possible factor, not an explanation for every playback problem. YouTube’s latency modes and trade-offs

What FFmpeg buffers do—and do not—change

FFmpeg documents rtmp_buffer as the RTMP client buffer time, with a documented default of 3000 milliseconds. It is a protocol-specific option; the documentation does not claim that increasing it fixes inadequate upload bandwidth or viewer-side playback stalls. FFmpeg’s fifo_size and overrun_nonfatal options concern a circular buffer for a UDP receiving path. They are not interchangeable with options for publishing over RTMP or RTMPS.

Before changing a flag, establish whether the stream uses RTMP/RTMPS or UDP, whether FFmpeg is sending or receiving on that path, and which options the installed command and build support. A larger software buffer can change how data is buffered; it does not make the connection faster. Avoid copying flags from a different protocol or direction. FFmpeg protocol documentation

A practical troubleshooting sequence

  1. Locate the symptom. Record whether the Pi’s preview, YouTube’s incoming stream, or only viewer playback stalls; check Live Control Room messages and stream health.
  2. Measure upload under normal contention. Compare repeated, realistic upload results with the combined configured stream bitrate and YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
  3. Run a representative preflight. Use the actual audio and comparable motion, and watch both Pi encoding behavior and YouTube stream health.
  4. Reduce the right load. If upload is the constraint, lower the stream target or improve the connection. If the network has room but encoding cannot keep up, test a lower encode target. Do not use a larger buffer as a substitute for either.
  5. For healthy ingest with viewer stalls, review latency mode and viewer-side network or player conditions.
  6. Only then adjust a buffer. Verify the protocol, traffic direction, and installed FFmpeg option before changing it.

Common symptoms and what to check

Symptom Likely area to investigate First useful check
YouTube reports poor stream health or the feed drops Upload capacity, connection stability, or encoder load Compare stable upload to total bitrate and run a representative preflight while monitoring the Pi and Live Control Room.
Only some viewers report pauses while YouTube ingest appears healthy Latency mode or viewer playback conditions Review the selected latency mode and compare reports from viewers on different connections.
A copied FFmpeg buffer flag makes no apparent difference Wrong protocol, direction, or cause Check whether the option applies to the actual RTMP/RTMPS publishing or UDP receiving path; revisit upload and stream health first.
Speed test looks fast, but the stream still drops at busy times Shared network load or intermittent connectivity Repeat upload checks under the same competing use and observe the stream during those periods.

Or let it run in the cloud

If the goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream made from uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is an alternative: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. StreamNeo accepts what you upload up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube only; it does not stream from a camera. Learn more at StreamNeo, then start the free first day.
