If your Raspberry Pi YouTube stream stopped starting after you changed or reset the stream key, replace the old key in the encoder configuration the running stream actually uses, save it, and restart the encoder. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room, select Stream, and copy the current key. The exact place to paste it depends on whether you use FFmpeg, OBS, a Pi streaming image, or another encoder.
Update the key YouTube currently shows
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Select Stream and copy the current stream key. YouTube’s guidance for an encoder startup error is to get the current key from Live Control Room and update the encoder: YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
- Replace the old value in your Pi encoder. Paste the new key into the encoder setting, script, configuration file, or service environment that the stream process actually reads. The location varies by software; without knowing your encoder, there is no single safe file path or command to give.
- Save the change and restart the encoder. Editing a file does not necessarily update an already running process. Restart the stream process using the controls for your encoder, then check the incoming-stream status in Live Control Room.
Treat the stream key like a password: it identifies where the encoder sends the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Keep it out of screenshots, public logs, and public code repositories. If you have exposed it, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the replacement.
Confirm the active settings before changing anything else
Make sure you edited the configuration in use
A Pi stream may start from a manually run command, a script, a system service, or an encoder interface. Confirm which one launches the process and that it reads the value you changed. If a service or startup script holds a separate copy, updating a different file will leave the running stream configured with the stale key.
Check the stream URL and protocol
If your setup uses RTMPS, retrieve the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and check that the encoder supports RTMPS and is configured with the matching URL. A correct key paired with the wrong URL or an unsupported protocol can still prevent a connection. YouTube notes that the interface may show ordinary RTMP by default; see YouTube Help’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance and Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.

If the new key does not fix startup
Check the encoder and the Pi’s actual workload
Look for errors in the encoder output and verify that it is producing the expected audio and video. YouTube recommends updating encoder software, checking the stream in the encoder, reviewing errors and CPU load, and testing the outbound connection when local audio and video appear healthy. On a Raspberry Pi, CPU load is worth checking, but a key change alone is not evidence that the board is underpowered. Follow YouTube’s troubleshooting steps and use the encoder’s own diagnostics.
Separate connection problems from broadcast-start settings
Watch Live Control Room as you start the encoder. If the encoder reports a local configuration or startup error, recheck the saved key and URL. If it connects and YouTube receives the feed but the broadcast itself does not start, inspect the scheduled stream’s settings. YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance explains that auto-start and auto-stop control whether the encoder can start or stop a stream; reused settings also carry those selections.

Channel permission is another, separate branch—not proof that the key change caused an eligibility problem. Google’s API error documentation lists liveStreamingNotEnabled and livePermissionBlocked as permission-related errors: YouTube Live Streaming API errors.
Test the outbound connection if the feed is unstable
If the encoder appears healthy but YouTube’s incoming stream is intermittent, check the Pi’s outbound connection and network capacity. YouTube includes connection testing among its troubleshooting recommendations. First distinguish an unstable incoming feed from an encoder that never connects; they point to different problems.
