Yes. You can use one MP4 as the repeating source for a 24/7 YouTube Live stream, but the file does not transmit itself. An encoder such as OBS must loop the MP4 and send the live feed to YouTube, while a computer or cloud playout service stays online to run the encoder.
How to loop one MP4 into a YouTube Live stream with OBS
- Make sure the channel can go live. YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it in advance. See YouTube’s live-stream eligibility guidance.
- Add the MP4 to OBS. In OBS, add a Media Source, select your file, and enable Loop. OBS supports MP4. Before broadcasting, play through the point where the file restarts and check that the audio transition is acceptable; a loop can expose a gap, click, or abrupt change in the recording. See OBS Media Sources.
- Create the YouTube broadcast and connect OBS. In YouTube Studio, create a live stream and use its stream URL and stream key in the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it, and replace it if it is exposed. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transmission. Follow YouTube’s live-stream settings guide and encoder setup instructions.
- Set the encoder output for the connection you have. YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Choose a resolution and bitrate that your sustained upload connection can support, rather than setting the encoder to the highest possible quality and risking dropped frames. These are outgoing encoder settings; the MP4’s own codec does not by itself determine the codec YouTube receives. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, test before going live, and monitor stream health using its live-streaming tips.
- Keep the whole transmission chain running. OBS must remain open with the scene and media source active, and the computer must have power and a working internet connection. A loop setting restarts the file; it does not restart a crashed encoder, restore a failed connection, or guarantee uninterrupted delivery. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring, but its guidance does not establish an uptime guarantee for a particular local setup.
What changes when the stream runs past 12 hours
Replay archives
YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a replay, do not rely on the YouTube archive for a continuous 24/7 broadcast: record locally and verify that recording, or end and restart broadcasts comfortably below the 12-hour threshold. Scheduled restarts interrupt the continuous broadcast and may produce multiple live entries. Read YouTube’s archive guidance.
Viewer rewind
DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. Viewers may not be able to rewind across the full broadcast or rely on pausing and resuming to cover its entire duration. See YouTube’s DVR guidance.
Check rights to every sound and image
Use only audio and visuals you have the necessary rights to broadcast and, if applicable, preserve in an archive. YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content; a stream can be interrupted or terminated if matched content remains after a warning. If you have a license, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist for the live stream to proceed without interruption. YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams explains the risk.

A license should specifically cover live streaming, the territories where the broadcast is available, and archive or replay use if you plan to keep a recording. YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility for necessary rights, including applicable music rights, on the provider. Having a track in an MP4 does not prove you have permission to broadcast it.

With local OBS, your computer, encoder, power, and internet connection all need to remain available. YouTube’s encoder guidance also identifies cloud-based prerecorded-video playout as a service category, but vendor uptime, pricing, and features vary; check each provider’s terms rather than assuming any service guarantees an uninterrupted stream.

Common problems and what to check
- The loop stops or the broadcast ends: Confirm the OBS Media Source still has Loop enabled and OBS is still running. Looping the MP4 cannot recover an encoder crash, power loss, or internet failure.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that the stream URL and current stream key in OBS match the live event, that the key has not been exposed or replaced, and that the channel is eligible for live streaming.
- The stream health is poor: Test the connection and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Reduce output resolution or bitrate if the available upload connection cannot sustain the configured settings; retain CBR and the recommended two-second keyframe interval, without exceeding four seconds.
- The MP4 repeats with an audible interruption: Review the end-to-start transition in OBS before going live. Adjust or edit the source file if its ending and beginning do not join cleanly.
- The live broadcast is interrupted over music or other content: Check that your rights cover live use and relevant territories, and contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting if you are licensed. A general permission to use a track does not necessarily prevent automated live matching.
- The 24-hour broadcast has no replay or full rewind: This may reflect YouTube’s limits for streams over 12 hours. Use a verified local recording if a replay matters, and understand that splitting the stream into shorter broadcasts interrupts continuity.
