First check whether the black screen is in the stream itself or only on one viewer’s device. If the Gyre preview or archive is black—or viewers on separate connections see the same thing—trace the source file and stream path. If only one viewer is affected, start with their browser, device and connection. YouTube says an error affecting one viewer is more likely local, while reports from viewers on different connections can indicate an encoder issue.
1. Find out who can see the black screen
Before changing Gyre settings, compare what the channel owner sees with what viewers see. Check the Gyre preview or encoder output, then ask viewers on unrelated connections to check the broadcast. YouTube recommends this distinction because a problem reported by one viewer may come from that viewer’s computer or internet connection; reports from multiple viewers on different connections point more toward the stream or encoder.

2. Check the video Gyre is streaming
Gyre’s setup guidance says a stream uses a pre-recorded video uploaded to Gyre storage and converted appropriately for the platform. Verify that the selected file is the intended one and plays correctly before treating the YouTube player as the cause. If the file is wrong, incomplete, or fails to play, replace or prepare the source and check its playback again.

Gyre’s knowledge-base article lists these video preparation values. Treat them as Gyre’s published guidance, not as proof that a particular setting caused a black screen; check the actual broadcast health messages and current platform requirements as well.

That article’s final listed line reads “Frame rates 44.1 kHz.” This appears to be a documentation error: kHz is a sample-rate unit, not a frame-rate unit. Do not use it as a frame-rate instruction; verify the audio sample-rate setting against current platform guidance. Gyre names Adobe Premiere, DaVinci Resolve, and Final Cut as possible conversion tools, not required purchases.
3. Inspect the encoder and local recording
If the preview is black or multiple viewers reproduce the fault, inspect the stream path before changing unrelated settings. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends using the latest encoder version, checking the stream’s picture and sound in the encoder, reviewing encoder errors and CPU load, and examining a local archive for audio or video faults. If the preview is healthy but viewers still report a problem, test the outbound internet connection and investigate delivery or stream health.

- Preview black: Recheck the chosen source and how it is loaded into the encoder.
- Preview normal, archive faulty: Investigate the encoder’s recording/output path and any errors it reports.
- Preview and archive normal, several viewers affected: Check YouTube’s stream health and outbound connectivity.
4. Read YouTube’s stream-health messages
Use the actual issue shown for the broadcast rather than assuming a black screen means a particular codec or bitrate is wrong. YouTube’s Live API health-status documentation includes configuration issue categories for video, audio, bitrate, frame rate, codecs, keyframes, and consistency between primary and backup streams. A reported issue can guide the next check; the symptom alone cannot identify which setting, if any, is at fault.
5. Confirm the Gyre and YouTube broadcast are paired correctly
Gyre’s first-stream guide describes creating a YouTube broadcast through the looped-stream scheduled-broadcast workflow, choosing visibility and auto-start as needed, and entering the stream key and broadcast ID in Gyre. Compare the broadcast selected in Gyre with the intended YouTube event and confirm the key belongs to it.

If YouTube reports an encoder startup error, its guidance is to obtain a new stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. Treat a stream key as private: do not include it in screenshots or send it in an ordinary support message.
6. If only one viewer is affected, troubleshoot playback
Ask the affected viewer to open the stream in another browser or on another device and, if possible, try another connection. YouTube’s specific advice about disabling Chrome hardware acceleration and updating graphics drivers is for a green screen with audio. Those are reasonable viewer-side checks when the issue appears local, but YouTube does not present them as a guaranteed fix for a black stream originating in Gyre.

7. Escalate with useful evidence
If the broadcast remains black after these checks, Gyre’s setup help says to contact its support team. Include the affected broadcast, whether the Gyre or encoder preview is also black, the relevant YouTube health messages, basic source-file details, and whether viewers on independent connections reproduce the problem. Do not send the stream key.
