Create an unlisted broadcast in YouTube Studio, connect Gyre using the channel-authorization or manual stream-key workflow available to your setup, and start the broadcast from Live Control Room when its preview is ready. Unlisted means anyone with the link can watch; it does not mean private.
Choose the right kind of test
YouTube has two distinct options that can be relevant when testing a live workflow: an audience-facing broadcast set to Unlisted, and a private monitor stream used for preview or testing. They are not interchangeable. The monitor stream is separate from the broadcast output, while an unlisted broadcast can be watched by anyone who has its link. Google’s YouTube Live Streaming API overview describes the separate monitor and broadcast streams.

If you need testers to watch the actual audience-facing output, use an unlisted broadcast and share the link carefully. For a creator-only preview, the private monitor stream is the distinct option to investigate.
Create an unlisted broadcast in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create a new live stream or schedule one. In the stream’s visibility settings, choose Unlisted. YouTube’s live stream settings help explains the available Public, Private, and Unlisted visibility choices.
- Keep the stream’s watch link for the intended testers only. Anyone who obtains the unlisted link can watch, so avoid posting it publicly or sharing it beyond your test group.
- Choose the Gyre connection method that applies to your account. Gyre’s published guidance describes channel authorization, which can create a YouTube broadcast and bind a stream key, while retaining manual setup for some configurations. The labels and available flow can differ by account and setup; follow the workflow presented in your Gyre account rather than assuming every configuration is identical. Connect Gyre and start the test
If using channel authorization
- Use Gyre’s YouTube authorization flow and grant the requested channel access.
- Select or create the broadcast associated with the unlisted test. Check in YouTube Live Control Room that the broadcast has the intended Unlisted visibility before sharing its link.
- Start the Gyre workflow and wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room. If YouTube requires a manual confirmation for the configuration in use, select Go live there to begin the audience-facing broadcast.
If using manual stream URL and key entry
- In YouTube Live Control Room, open the encoder settings for the unlisted broadcast and copy the YouTube server URL and stream key.
- Enter the URL and key in Gyre’s applicable stream settings, then start the Gyre feed.
- Wait until the preview appears in Live Control Room. Select Go live in YouTube to begin the broadcast.
- When the test is complete, end the stream in YouTube and stop the Gyre feed.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions cover creating a stream, connecting with the URL and key, checking the preview, going live, and ending the broadcast. Whether a manual Go live confirmation is needed can depend on the particular workflow: for the encoder path described above, wait for the preview and click it.

Keep the test private enough for its purpose
- Unlisted is link-accessible, not invitation-only. Anyone who receives or is forwarded the link can watch. Share it only with intended testers.
- Monitor is not broadcast privacy. A private monitor stream is a separate preview/testing output, not a private version of the audience-facing unlisted stream.
- Verify visibility before sharing. Confirm the broadcast is still set to Unlisted in Live Control Room; do not assume the visibility of any archived video will match the live test automatically.
- Consider the archive. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived after ending. Check the resulting video’s visibility settings rather than assuming the archive remains unlisted. See YouTube’s encoder-stream guidance.
Troubleshoot common test problems
The preview does not appear
Confirm Gyre is running and sending to the correct YouTube broadcast. If you used manual setup, check that you copied the server URL and stream key for this broadcast and entered them in the corresponding Gyre fields. Wait for the preview in Live Control Room before starting the audience-facing stream.
Testers cannot open the link
Check that the correct broadcast link was shared and that the broadcast is Unlisted rather than Private. Unlisted viewers need the link; it is not limited to a list of invited accounts.

The stream is connected but not live to viewers
For the manual encoder workflow, a received preview is not the same as a live broadcast. Select Go live in Live Control Room after the preview appears. Then check the watch link from a tester’s perspective.
The archive has unexpected visibility
After ending the stream, open the archived video’s settings and verify its visibility. YouTube’s automatic archive behavior for streams under 12 hours does not itself establish that the archive’s privacy setting remains unchanged.
