AWS Elemental MediaLive Dropped Frames on YouTube: Encoder Settings to Check

A nonzero MediaLive DroppedFrames metric is an encoder-side signal. Learn how to verify it in CloudWatch and compare the stream with YouTube’s ingest guidance.

If AWS Elemental MediaLive reports nonzero DroppedFrames, check whether the encoder is keeping up with real time, then compare its output settings with YouTube’s ingest guidance and Live Control Room health. The metric points to frames dropped by MediaLive; it does not, by itself, prove a network fault or explain what YouTube received.

What MediaLive’s DroppedFrames metric means

AWS defines DroppedFrames as the number of input frames dropped during the metric period. AWS says a value other than zero indicates that the encoder cannot process incoming video fast enough to keep up with real time. AWS recommends viewing the metric with the Sum statistic. AWS Elemental MediaLive CloudWatch metrics

This is an encoder-side signal, not a generic count of frames YouTube dropped. YouTube’s stream-health diagnostics describe what it observes at ingest, so compare the two rather than treating them as interchangeable.

Check the metric in the right time window and pipeline

  1. In CloudWatch, open the MediaLive DroppedFrames metric and select Sum.
  2. Filter or graph the active channel’s Pipeline dimension, and set the chart to the exact period when viewers or YouTube reported a problem. AWS lists Pipeline and Region among the supported dimensions. AWS Elemental MediaLive CloudWatch metrics
  3. Compare pipelines if the channel uses more than one. Note whether the increase aligns with the symptom and whether it appears on one pipeline or more.
  4. Do not interpret a missing datapoint as proof of healthy output. AWS says missing data can mean the channel is stopped, initializing, waiting for initial input, paused, or not producing output. AWS Elemental MediaLive CloudWatch metrics

Compare the encoder settings with YouTube’s ingest guidance

Check the settings actually sent to YouTube, not only a saved preset. YouTube’s general RTMP/RTMPS guidance supports up to 60 fps and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. Use the bitrate row matching the ingest codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Codec, resolution, and frame rate

  • Confirm the outgoing codec and resolution against the format selected or expected for the YouTube stream.
  • Verify the output frame rate is the intended rate and that the bitrate comparison uses the same frame rate. YouTube’s general encoder guidance supports up to 60 fps; do not assume a setting for 30 fps is the right row for 60 fps. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

Bitrate and rate control

Use YouTube’s current codec-, resolution-, and frame-rate-specific table rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. The YouTube Help table available on October 3, 2026, lists H.264 at 1080p30 with a recommended bitrate of 14 Mbps and a minimum of 5 Mbps; for H.264 at 1080p60, it lists 17 Mbps recommended and 6 Mbps minimum. These are guidance figures for those formats, not universal settings. Check the matching row for your actual output. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR). MediaLive describes CBR as matching the specified bitrate; variable bitrate (VBR) targets an average and permits short increases up to a maximum, while quality-defined variable bitrate (QVBR) varies bitrate to target quality within a maximum. If YouTube reports a bitrate issue, compare the configured mode and actual output with YouTube’s recommendation, then check stream health after a change. Keyframe interval and GOP duration

YouTube recommends a keyframe frequency of two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds. In MediaLive, check the GOP size and its units, then calculate the resulting duration using the configured frame rate; a frame count alone does not tell you the interval. AWS recommends closed GOP cadence 1 for streaming and warns that 0 breaks output segmenting. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions AWS Elemental MediaLive encoder settings

RTMP or RTMPS destination

YouTube recommends RTMPS. Its developer guide describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL. Check that the protocol configured at the MediaLive destination matches what the destination expects; a cleartext RTMP connection will not satisfy a destination expecting RTMPS. Read YouTube stream health alongside AWS metrics

At the same incident interval, inspect YouTube Live Control Room for health messages. YouTube’s diagnostics can flag configuration issues involving bitrate, frame rate, codecs, keyframe frequency, and consistency between primary and backup streams. Its “Video output low” issue means YouTube is not receiving enough video to maintain smooth streaming. YouTube Live Streaming API: Stream health

MediaLive’s NetworkOut is useful context for the output path, but it is not the same measure as DroppedFrames. A nonzero dropped-frame metric alone does not establish that the network caused the problem. AWS Elemental MediaLive CloudWatch metrics

A practical diagnostic sequence

  1. Graph CloudWatch DroppedFrames as Sum for the relevant pipeline and incident window. Record when it rises and whether another pipeline behaves differently.
  2. For that same period, compare MediaLive’s actual output codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, rate-control mode, GOP duration, and protocol with the corresponding YouTube guidance.
  3. Read YouTube Live Control Room health messages for the same stream and time. Note any flags for low video output, bitrate, frame rate, codec, or keyframe cadence.
  4. Correlate those observations with MediaLive output and network metrics, including NetworkOut. Treat the AWS dropped-frame metric as encoder-processing evidence and YouTube health as an ingest-side observation.
  5. Change a setting only when the configuration or health message gives you a reason to do so, then observe both sets of signals during a representative test with typical audio and motion. YouTube recommends monitoring stream health during the event. YouTube Help: Live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

Without the affected channel’s metrics, configuration, and timestamps, these signals cannot identify a particular incident’s root cause on their own.

Common symptoms and what to check

  • DroppedFrames rises during the incident: AWS defines this as the encoder being unable to keep up with incoming video in real time. Confirm the pipeline and time window, then check the output configuration and YouTube health together.
  • YouTube reports “Video output low”: YouTube says it is not receiving enough video for smooth streaming. Compare the ingest format and actual delivery with the stream-health diagnostics; do not assume this is the same counter as MediaLive’s DroppedFrames.
  • YouTube flags bitrate, frame rate, codec, or keyframes: Match the setting to the exact codec, resolution, and frame rate row and to YouTube’s keyframe guidance before testing again.
  • No CloudWatch datapoint appears: Check whether the channel is stopped, initializing, waiting for input, paused, or producing no output before drawing conclusions about encoder health.
  • RTMPS connection does not work: Verify the destination protocol and configured protocol agree; YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest.
