How to Use S3 Videos in an Amazon EC2 YouTube Live Playlist

S3 stores the videos, but an encoder or supported AWS media service must turn them into a live feed. Here’s how to plan and test an EC2-to-YouTube playlist.

Amazon S3 stores your video files; it does not turn them into a YouTube Live broadcast by itself. To stream an S3 playlist, an encoder or supported AWS media service must read and sequence the files, encode a live feed, and send it to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room. The exact playlist setup depends on the playback tool you choose, so test that tool’s S3 access, sequencing, and looping before relying on it.

Choose how to get S3 video to YouTube Live

There are two distinct AWS patterns to consider. One runs playback and encoding on EC2, where a process reads and sequences your files. The other uses AWS MediaLive with an S3-backed input that it supports. AWS also documents a reference architecture that stores encoded segments in S3 and uses CloudFront for delivery; that is a different streaming design, not a turnkey S3-files-to-YouTube playlist.

Approach What it does What you must verify
EC2 playback and encoder A process on your EC2 instance reads video objects from S3, plays them in sequence or in a loop, and sends an encoded feed to YouTube. The chosen tool’s S3 access, playlist syntax, sequence and loop behavior, restart behavior, and required AWS permissions.
MediaLive with an S3 input MediaLive documents support for MP4 pulled from S3 and HLS pulled from S3. Whether the current input and output configuration meets your playlist needs and can deliver to your intended YouTube destination.
Live Streaming on AWS reference solution The documented architecture uses MediaLive to ingest and transcode a feed, S3 for encoded segments, and CloudFront for delivery to viewers. Whether this architecture fits your use case; it should not be assumed to be a direct S3-file playlist sent to YouTube.

Set up an EC2-hosted playlist

1. Keep the source videos in a private S3 bucket

Store the source clips as S3 objects and arrange them in a way that is easy for your playback process to select. Do not make a private bucket public merely to make playback work. Give the EC2 process appropriately scoped access to the objects it needs, using an AWS identity and permissions reviewed for your environment. The specific policy depends on the playback tool and deployment; there is no single ready-made policy established for this workflow.

2. Choose and test a playback/encoding process

Select a tool that can read the objects, either by accessing S3 through an authenticated AWS client or by staging the files where the process can read them. Confirm that it can play the intended clips in order and loop them as required. Playlist syntax, crossfades, loop handling, and recovery after a process restart vary by tool, so do not assume a playlist file or command will work until you test it end to end.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

3. Get the YouTube ingest details

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and set up the live event.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the event into the encoder’s destination settings.
  3. Keep the key private: it functions as a credential for accepting your feed. Limit who can access it, and reset it in Live Control Room if you believe it has been exposed.

4. Configure the encoder and verify the incoming picture

Use YouTube’s current encoder settings for your selected codec, resolution, and frame rate. YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS for the relevant ingest mode, H.264 as an available video codec, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; the keyframe interval should not exceed four seconds. Use the current YouTube bitrate table for the chosen format rather than applying one bitrate to every stream. The required bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate, as well as the upload capacity available to the encoder.

Start the playback process and check the incoming preview in Live Control Room before making the event public. Confirm that the intended clip is playing, video and audio are present, and the feed remains stable. YouTube recommends testing the encoder connection and stream content ahead of the event.

5. Check the playlist behavior, not just the first clip

Run the playlist long enough to observe a clip transition and, if the stream is intended to repeat, a full loop. Check how your selected tool handles a missing object, an unreadable file, the end of a playlist, and a process restart. Those behaviors are tool-specific; a successful preview of one clip does not establish that the playlist will loop or recover as intended.

Use MediaLive only when its input and output fit

MediaLive documentation lists MP4 pulled from S3 and HLS pulled from S3 as supported input types. That makes it a possible managed-media route, but support for an input type alone does not establish that a particular multi-file playlist, loop, or YouTube output is configured for you. Confirm the current MediaLive input and output options and test the complete route to YouTube before choosing this architecture.

Do not confuse this with AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS reference solution. In that design, S3 stores encoded segments and CloudFront delivers the stream to viewers. It serves a different purpose from having an EC2 process read source videos from S3 and send a live feed to YouTube.

Preflight and troubleshoot the stream

Before the event

  • Test the complete S3-to-encoder-to-YouTube path before scheduling or publicizing the event.
  • Preview the incoming feed in Live Control Room and check video, audio, and clip transitions.
  • Confirm the encoder’s codec, CBR setting, keyframe interval, and bitrate against YouTube’s current guidance for the chosen format.
  • Keep an independent local archive if you need a dependable copy of the broadcast, and check that the recording file is growing while the stream runs.
  • Make sure you have the rights needed to stream every video and audio track. A playlist being technically playable does not itself establish that its contents are cleared for a public live stream.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
YouTube receives no feed Encoder destination details, stream key, network upload, or encoder startup. Recheck the stream URL and key in the encoder, confirm the playback process and encoder are running, then look for an incoming preview in Live Control Room.
The first file plays, but another clip does not Playlist sequencing, object access, or an unsupported file/input for the selected tool. Test each object with the same playback process, verify access to the failing object, and check the selected tool’s documented playlist and format support.
The playlist stops instead of looping Loop behavior is controlled by the chosen playback tool, not by S3 itself. Check that tool’s loop configuration and test a complete playlist cycle before going live.
Video stutters or the connection is unstable Encoder settings or available upload capacity. Compare the selected format and bitrate with YouTube’s current settings table, then test the stream on the connection the encoder will use.
The stream is live but the archive is missing or incomplete YouTube’s archive limits or local recording setup. Keep and monitor a local recording when an archive matters. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, while streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.

Protect the recording and the stream key

YouTube’s automatic archive is not a substitute for retaining the original S3 objects. Keep source files in S3 and make a separate local recording if you need an additional copy. YouTube recommends checking that local archive files are growing during the broadcast. Treat the stream key as a password: restrict access and reset it through Live Control Room if it is compromised.
