For YouTube Live, you also need a valid stream URL and secret stream key, compatible audio or video settings, and a Windows PC and internet connection that stay available. The FFmpeg command below is a starting pattern, not a verified end-to-end setup; test it with your installed build and chosen destination before relying on it.
What the FFmpeg options do
-stream_loop is an input option: -1 means repeat the input indefinitely. Place it before the -i it applies to. -re reads a file at its native rate (equivalent to -readrate 1), rather than letting FFmpeg read the file as fast as possible. FFmpeg describes this as a way to simulate a capture device or live input when reading from a file. These are documented behaviors, not the result of a test on a particular Windows machine. Loop one sleep-sounds file to YouTube Live
Before you start
- Install an FFmpeg build that supports the output format and codecs you intend to use, and confirm that
ffmpegruns in PowerShell or Command Prompt. - Put the audio file at a known local path. This example uses an MP3 at
C:sleep-streamsleep-sounds.mp3; substitute your actual path. - In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, create or open a live stream and copy its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain where to find them. Treat the key like a password.
- Confirm that your channel and chosen live setup are eligible and ready to stream. The cited YouTube instructions do not establish eligibility for a particular account.
Run an illustrative audio-only command
In PowerShell, replace the path and the destination placeholder with the values for your setup:
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i "C:sleep-streamsleep-sounds.mp3" -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "<destination ingest URL and stream key>"This shows the option order and a basic audio-only RTMP-style output pattern; it is not a verified command for every FFmpeg build or YouTube stream configuration. YouTube’s encoder guidance accepts AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS, but a video-bearing feed may be required or more appropriate for the setup you choose. Follow YouTube’s current settings and the requirements shown in your Live Control Room rather than assuming audio-only output will work for every stream. Do not publish a script, screenshot, or log that reveals your key.

Set output quality to match the destination and connection
The example sets AAC audio to 128 Kbps; it does not set video because it is an audio-only pattern. For YouTube encoder streams, the current help page documents RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, H.264, H.265 or AV1 video options, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR) encoding, and up to 60 frames per second. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For stereo AAC or MP3, its advanced settings list 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps as recommended values. Those video parameters matter only if your output includes video; choose bitrate and resolution appropriate to the selected codec, stream setup and stable upload capacity. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, use its recommended RTMPS option, and run a speed test. Do not copy a generic bitrate without accounting for your output.
Test before relying on the loop
- Start a test stream using the chosen file and settings. YouTube explicitly advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Check the FFmpeg console for connection, encoder or input errors, and check YouTube Studio for stream health and warnings.
- Listen to the stream from a separate device or browser. Confirm the sound is continuous and that YouTube receives the intended audio.
- Only after the test works should you use the setup for a longer broadcast. Keep monitoring stream health and messages during the event.
YouTube recommends testing and monitoring in its encoder guidance. A successful short test cannot establish that a Windows computer, internet connection or live session will remain uninterrupted for 24 hours.

Loop a playlist of sleep sounds instead
If you want rain, night-forest ambience or other tracks in sequence, the concat demuxer can read a text playlist and process its inputs in order. Create a simple text file such as C:sleep-streamplaylist.txt:

file 'C:/sleep-stream/night-forest.mp3'Save the playlist in a compatible encoding; FFmpeg documents the concat script as extended-ASCII text. Forward slashes in the example avoid backslash-escaping ambiguity, but check paths on your Windows setup. A common command shape is:

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -f concat -safe 0 -i "C:sleep-streamplaylist.txt" -c:a aac -b:a 128k -f flv "<destination ingest URL and stream key>"This combines the documented input loop and concat options; validate it with your installed FFmpeg version and playlist before using it live. -safe 0 relaxes concat path safety checks, so use it only with a playlist you control. The concat demuxer expects files to have the same streams, codecs and time bases. It adjusts timestamps using each file’s duration, so inaccurate duration metadata can cause gaps or artifacts; a duration directive can override stored duration. The concat demuxer documentation explains these constraints. Listen at every join: compatible files can still have audible transitions that need editing or different track choices.

What 24/7 operation requires beyond FFmpeg
An infinite file loop is not the same as a reliable 24/7 broadcast. -re controls file reading pace; neither it nor -stream_loop -1 keeps Windows awake, restarts a failed process, repairs a dropped connection or guarantees that a platform session stays live.

Check the Windows host and connection separately
- Review the power and sleep settings for your specific Windows version so the PC does not suspend during the stream. The exact settings depend on the release and device; verify them locally rather than relying on a generic recipe.
- Decide how FFmpeg will be started after a reboot and what will happen if the process exits. The commands here do not configure startup or process supervision.
- Check that your internet connection and upload capacity are stable for the selected output. Indian ISP, data-plan and power conditions vary by location and provider; no single connection figure establishes suitability for your setup.
- Keep the source files available locally and monitor both FFmpeg output and YouTube Studio. A running process alone does not prove that viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
Background execution is not recovery
FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends -nostdin when running as a background task so FFmpeg does not check console input. It also documents redirecting standard input from NUL on Windows as an alternative. For example, the option can be added to an invocation as -nostdin. This addresses console input only; it does not prevent sleep or restart FFmpeg after a process or network failure. Keep the audio and visuals rights-cleared
Use sounds and any accompanying visuals for which you have the necessary rights. YouTube says live streams can be affected or terminated by copyright restrictions, including a live copyright strike; Content ID claims may also be made after a live stream if it is archived. These are YouTube platform rules, not a determination of Indian copyright law or a license for a particular recording. Review YouTube’s live-stream restrictions and copyright guidance.

Troubleshoot common setup failures

What to know about YouTube archives
YouTube’s encoder setup page says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume one uninterrupted 24-hour stream will be saved as a single complete archive; plan separately if you need a recording. See YouTube’s encoder live-stream instructions.
