Use FFmpeg’s acrossfade audio filter to blend the end of one prerecorded podcast episode into the start of the next. To broadcast that continuous audio on YouTube Live, combine the filtered audio with a visual stream, encode the finished program to YouTube’s current ingest requirements, and send it over RTMPS. The exact command depends on your files and video source, so build and test an adaptable filtergraph rather than relying on one universal command.

What the crossfade does—and what it does not do

FFmpeg’s acrossfade filter blends one audio input into another. It handles the episode transition; it does not, by itself, create a complete YouTube livestream. A live output also needs a video source, an encoder configuration, and the RTMPS endpoint and stream key from your YouTube Live Control Room.

The FFmpeg documentation’s file-to-file example is ffmpeg -i first.flac -i second.flac -filter_complex acrossfade=d=10:c1=exp:c2=exp output.flac. This makes a ten-second audio crossfade and writes an audio file; it is not a YouTube Live command. See the FFmpeg filter documentation.

Choose and preview the transition

Set a duration that fits the material

The documented default is 44,100 samples, equivalent to one second at 44.1 kHz. That is a default, not a recommended podcast transition length. Set d (or duration) to choose a duration that suits the content, then listen to the join. If you set a duration, it takes precedence over nb_samples (or ns).

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Understand overlap and curves

  • o (or overlap) controls whether the first stream’s end overlaps the second stream’s start. Overlap is enabled by default; use o=0 to disable it.
  • c1 and c2 (or curve1 and curve2) set the fade curves. FFmpeg documents the available curve types under its afade filter.
  • n (or inputs) sets how many inputs are crossfaded in sequence. It defaults to two; the documentation demonstrates chaining three inputs with n=3.

Before building the full live graph, identify the episode filenames and audio stream layout, and preview the transition. The official references do not prescribe a podcast-specific loudness target or preparation recipe.

Build an audio filtergraph for multiple episodes

For a sequence of files, FFmpeg’s acrossfade supports multiple inputs. The following adaptable pattern illustrates the idea for three audio inputs; confirm the input numbering and filtergraph syntax against your files and FFmpeg build before using it:

[0:a][1:a][2:a]acrossfade=n=3:d=2[aout]

Here, d=2 requests a two-second fade at each join, and [aout] labels the resulting audio stream for later use in the graph. The duration is an example to adjust, not a universal setting. For a simple two-file transition, the documented FFmpeg example is acrossfade=d=10:c1=exp:c2=exp.

For a local check, you can adapt the documentation’s file-to-file command to your chosen filenames and duration, write an output audio file, and listen through the transition before sending anything live. The filter’s behavior depends on the actual inputs and chosen settings; do not assume a transition sounds right without previewing it.

Connect the finished program to YouTube Live

  1. Get the ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream endpoint and stream key for the broadcast. Keep the key private; do not put a real key in a public command, screenshot, or article.
  2. Choose a visual source. Decide whether the program uses a still image, video, or another visual stream. The audio filtergraph must be combined with that source; input and mapping details vary with the media files and their stream layouts.
  3. Encode to YouTube’s current settings. For ordinary live content, YouTube recommends RTMPS. The endpoint, protocol, and path must be valid; Google’s RTMPS guide says the connection uses port 443 and describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through SSL. Consult the RTMPS ingestion guide.
  4. Check the current encoder table. YouTube’s guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video, AAC or MP3 audio, frame rates up to 60 fps, constant-bitrate encoding, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Select the video bitrate from the row matching your codec, resolution, and frame rate rather than treating one bitrate as universal.
  5. Check audio settings for your mix. YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps for stereo audio. Its 5.1 guidance is 48 kHz and 384 kbps; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS is supported only for AAC. See YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current values and requirements.
  6. Test before the broadcast. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the planned event, then monitoring stream health and reviewing messages while live. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple output formats, so verify the actual outgoing program in the Live Control Room.

Because a complete FFmpeg command must account for the visual source, input formats, stream mapping, encoder choices, and private ingest details, there is no single reliable command to paste unchanged for every setup. Assemble and test the graph with representative media before the broadcast.

When HLS is the right alternative

HLS is a separate YouTube ingest option, not a setting to mix casually into an RTMPS command. YouTube’s HLS setup calls for TS segments, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and segment durations between one and four seconds. YouTube says HLS has higher latency than RTMP because it sends segments rather than a continuous stream. Use it only when your workflow calls for HLS and follows the separate YouTube HLS setup.

Troubleshoot common problems

  • The transition is abrupt or too long: Adjust d and preview the join. The documented default is one second, but the best duration depends on the audio.
  • The filtergraph does not connect: Check that each input label refers to an audio stream and that the output label is mapped into the final program. Input numbering and stream layouts vary by file.
  • YouTube does not receive the stream: Verify the selected protocol, endpoint, path, and private stream key. For RTMPS, check that the endpoint supports the required connection on port 443.
  • YouTube reports encoder or stream-health issues: Compare codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, frame rate, and audio format with the current encoder guidance; then test with representative audio and movement.
  • HLS ingest behaves differently from RTMPS: Confirm the TS segment format, rolling playlist limit, HTTPS method, and one-to-four-second segment duration. HLS has higher latency, so do not expect it to behave like continuous RTMP ingest.
