You can use FFmpeg to send a video or other media input to YouTube Live from Windows, then use Task Scheduler to launch the FFmpeg command automatically. The FFmpeg and YouTube setup is well documented; the exact Task Scheduler options depend on your Windows version and whether the task must survive a reboot, sign-out, or process failure. Treat the scheduled task as a way to start FFmpeg—not as a guarantee that one YouTube event will remain live or be archived indefinitely.
What you need before scheduling FFmpeg
- A Windows computer that can stay powered on and connected to the internet. Task Scheduler can start a process, but it cannot keep a powered-off computer or failed network online.
- A Windows FFmpeg build that supports the RTMP or RTMPS protocol you plan to use. The command below is a pattern to adapt, not a verified command for every build or YouTube stream.
- A YouTube Live encoder stream, its current server URL and stream key, and a media input FFmpeg can read.
- Reliable upload capacity for the resolution, frame rate, and codec you choose. Check the live preview and stream health before relying on a long-running task.
Create or select a YouTube Live encoder stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room.
- Create or select an encoder stream, then copy its current server URL and stream key. Use the URL shown in the Live Control Room rather than assuming an older saved URL is still current.
- Prefer the RTMPS URL. YouTube describes RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP and recommends it for Live. RTMPS encrypts the connection; it does not make the stream key safe to expose.
- Keep the stream key private. YouTube says keys are like a stream’s password and address. Do not publish it in a script, screenshot, or log; reset it in YouTube if you believe it has been compromised.

Choose stream settings YouTube can receive
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, CBR, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, and AAC or MP3 audio. Its recommended bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; the following H.264 figures are YouTube-published guidance, not a promise that your connection can sustain them.

YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Choose settings that your upload connection can reliably maintain, then test the same motion and audio you intend to stream. Higher resolution or frame rate can require more bandwidth; a bitrate that exceeds reliable upload capacity can lead to buffering or poor stream health.

Build and test the FFmpeg command
FFmpeg’s general command structure is global options, input options and input, followed by output options and the output URL. Its protocol documentation includes this real-time file-to-RTMP example:

ffmpeg -re -i myfile -f flv rtmp://myserver/live/mystreamFor YouTube, replace the example input and destination with your media file and the current ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room. Check that your installed FFmpeg build supports the chosen RTMP(S) protocol. Do not put an actual stream key in a publicly shared example.
For a background invocation, add -nostdin so FFmpeg does not wait for console input. On Windows, FFmpeg also documents redirecting standard input to NUL as an alternative. A file-input command’s basic shape is:

Set up Task Scheduler to start the command
Use Task Scheduler to launch a stable command file or script that contains the FFmpeg invocation, rather than relying on a command you have only tested interactively. The Windows-specific task settings below are not established by the cited guidance, so verify their labels and behavior on your Windows version before depending on them.
- Save the tested FFmpeg command in a local script or command file, and confirm it runs successfully when launched directly.
- Open Task Scheduler and create a task that launches that file at the time or system event that matches your intended use. Task Scheduler labels and options vary by Windows version; choose deliberately whether the task should run only when you are signed in or also when you are not.
- Review the task’s permissions, working directory, and access to the media file and FFmpeg executable. If the task runs under another account or outside your normal sign-in session, confirm that account can access those paths.
- Test the task itself—not only the script—then inspect its run result and FFmpeg output. Confirm YouTube’s Live Control Room receives the feed and that the preview shows usable picture and sound.
- Decide separately how you will handle a Windows reboot, power loss, network interruption, or FFmpeg exit. A scheduled launch alone does not establish a verified retry or recovery policy; test the behavior you configure.
Test the stream and understand the 24/7 limit
Before leaving a stream unattended, test with representative motion and audio, preview the feed, and monitor stream health. YouTube recommends starting setup early and checking that the event is accessible from the channel and watch pages.

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That does not establish that a 24/7 encoder feed becomes one uninterrupted event, or that a single archive continues indefinitely. Treat the YouTube event and archive lifecycle separately from whether FFmpeg remains running; plan how you will manage long-running events and recordings in YouTube Studio.

Troubleshoot common failures
- No connection or rejected output: Re-copy the current ingest URL and key from Live Control Room, verify the selected URL is RTMPS if intended, and confirm the FFmpeg build supports the protocol. Reset the key if it may have been exposed.
- FFmpeg waits or behaves differently when run as a task: Use
-nostdinfor background operation, or redirect standard input toNUL. Test the exact task invocation and its account context. - Task starts but cannot find the file or executable: Check the task’s working directory and use paths the task’s account can access; then run the command file directly under the same account context if possible.
- Unstable picture, buffering, or unhealthy stream: Check upload reliability and lower the bitrate, resolution, or frame rate if necessary. Compare the selected settings with YouTube’s codec-specific guidance and inspect its live preview.
- Task does not restore the stream after reboot or an FFmpeg exit: A launch task is not itself proof of restart or retry behavior. Review and test the task’s trigger and recovery behavior for your specific Windows version and operating conditions.
- The live event ends or the archive is not what you expected: FFmpeg process continuity and YouTube event/archive behavior are separate. YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours and does not promise one perpetual 24/7 archive.
