How to Fix FFmpeg Reconnecting Repeatedly During a YouTube Live Stream

Repeated FFmpeg reconnects can come from the source input or the YouTube publishing connection. Identify the failing leg before changing retry options.

First identify which connection is failing: FFmpeg may be reconnecting while reading its input, or it may be losing its connection while publishing to YouTube. The HTTP -reconnect options address HTTP inputs; they are not a general fix for an RTMP or RTMPS publishing failure. Check the FFmpeg log and YouTube Live Control Room before changing flags.

Find the connection that is reconnecting

An FFmpeg live workflow can have two separate network legs: an input URL that FFmpeg reads, and an output URL that sends the encoded stream to YouTube. A retry setting for one protocol does not necessarily affect the other.

  • Input failure: FFmpeg reports a read, input, or source-URL error. The input protocol determines whether FFmpeg’s HTTP reconnect options apply.
  • Output failure: FFmpeg reports a write, output, RTMP, or RTMPS error while sending to YouTube. Check the YouTube destination URL, stream key, network, and Live Control Room stream health.

Do not infer the failing leg from the word “reconnecting” alone. The command, FFmpeg build, and log lines surrounding the disconnect are needed to identify the cause.

Capture useful evidence before editing the command

  1. Record the FFmpeg version and build information.
  2. Save the exact command, but redact the stream key, passwords, tokens, and other credentials before sharing it.
  3. Save several lines of the complete FFmpeg log immediately before and after a reconnect. Note whether the failure appears during input reading or output writing, and record the protocol used by the affected URL.
  4. At the same time, check YouTube Live Control Room for stream-health messages. Compare their timing with the FFmpeg errors.

This separates source-side failures from publishing or ingest problems. Without those details, there is no single flag that can be identified as the fix.

If FFmpeg is losing an HTTP input

FFmpeg’s documented reconnect controls in the HTTP protocol reference are for HTTP connections. Check ffmpeg -h protocol=http on the installed build; option support and defaults can vary by version. Choose a setting for the failure shown in the log and the behavior you want at the end of the input:

HTTP option What it addresses
reconnect Reconnect when a connection is interrupted before reaching end of file.
reconnect_at_eof Treat end of file as an error and reconnect; intended for live or endless streams.
reconnect_on_network_error Retry TCP or TLS errors during connection establishment.
reconnect_on_http_error Retry selected HTTP status codes, including code classes such as 4xx or 5xx.
reconnect_streamed Allow reconnects for streamed or non-seekable inputs.
reconnect_delay_max Set a maximum reconnect delay.
reconnect_max_retries Set a maximum number of attempts.
reconnect_delay_total_max Bound the total time spent waiting on reconnect delays.

These options have different triggers; enabling all of them without checking the error can obscure the actual problem. Retries cannot repair a source that is unavailable, an incorrect URL, an authentication failure, or an unstable network.

For the FFmpeg 8.1 HTTP source documentation specifically, the listed maximum reconnect delay default is 120 seconds and the retry-count default is unlimited (-1). Those are reference values for that version, not guarantees for every installed build. Verify your own build’s help output and set bounds appropriate to the workflow where supported. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation.

If FFmpeg is disconnecting while publishing to YouTube

Verify the destination URL and stream key

Get the current stream URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, and confirm that both are configured in the encoder. Treat the key as a password: do not include it in screenshots, public logs, or command examples. YouTube’s encoder setup guidance explains where to find the stream details.

Check the RTMPS endpoint and connection errors

YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. Confirm that FFmpeg is using the actual RTMPS destination shown in Live Control Room rather than assuming an example host is your endpoint. If the log shows a timeout or SSL error, verify the URL and protocol. For the documented invalid-certificate SSL error, YouTube also suggests checking the server URL and protocol and trying port 443 where appropriate. Follow YouTube’s RTMPS troubleshooting guidance for the specific error; do not change ports blindly.

Check upload reliability and stream health

Run an upload-speed test and test with representative audio and motion before an event. During a stream, monitor YouTube’s stream-health status and messages as well as FFmpeg’s output. Upload capacity and stability matter for the selected stream quality; a speed result alone does not establish that the connection will remain reliable throughout a broadcast. YouTube’s live encoder settings and troubleshooting guidance covers stream health and testing.

Review encoder settings without treating them as transport fixes

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of two seconds, and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Check the current YouTube guidance for a supported protocol and codec combination for your stream. These settings can expose an encoder configuration problem, but YouTube does not say that changing them cures a network or transport disconnection.

Why adding more retries can make things worse

An indefinitely retrying process can hide a persistent fault while the YouTube broadcast remains broken or unavailable. First use the error and stream-health evidence to address the underlying source, URL or key, network, or service-side problem. Where retry controls exist for the protocol that is actually failing, bound attempts or delay to suit your workflow.

In particular, do not add HTTP reconnect switches to an RTMP or RTMPS output and assume they control YouTube publishing. The cited FFmpeg reconnect descriptions are HTTP-specific; YouTube output issues require output-side diagnosis.

Troubleshoot by symptom

What you observe What to check next
FFmpeg reports an input read failure for an HTTP URL. Confirm the source URL and access are valid, then select the HTTP reconnect option matching the reported trigger and desired EOF behavior. Inspect the installed build’s ffmpeg -h protocol=http output.
FFmpeg reports a write or output failure while sending to YouTube. Confirm the current destination URL and stream key in Live Control Room, then check the RTMP/RTMPS protocol and the corresponding stream-health messages. HTTP input flags are not the remedy for this output leg.
The log reports a timeout or SSL error. Check the actual endpoint and protocol shown in Live Control Room. For YouTube’s documented invalid-certificate error, review its RTMPS guidance, including the port 443 suggestion where appropriate.
YouTube reports a stream-health problem while FFmpeg continues retrying. Use the message and its timing alongside FFmpeg’s surrounding log lines to distinguish an ingest/network problem from an input-source failure. Check upload reliability and the encoder configuration.
The source ends and FFmpeg stops instead of continuing. If the input is an HTTP live or endless source, check whether reconnect_at_eof matches the intended behavior. It is not appropriate for every finite file or workflow.

If the failure persists, a useful diagnosis requires the FFmpeg version, a redacted command, the complete relevant log excerpt, source and output protocols, network/upload conditions, and the YouTube stream-health message. Without those details, the root cause cannot be determined reliably.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream rather than troubleshoot a local FFmpeg pipeline, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the uploaded video streams as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. Start the free day on StreamNeo.
