You can stream local videos in sequence to YouTube Live from a spare Windows PC using FFmpeg: make a playlist text file, create a live stream in YouTube Studio, then have FFmpeg read the files and send the output to YouTube’s server URL and stream key. The exact command depends on how the videos are encoded and whether the playlist should repeat; first check that the files are compatible, then test the stream in YouTube’s preview before going live.
What you need before starting
- A Windows PC with FFmpeg available in a command prompt or PowerShell session. The exact Windows build and installation steps depend on the FFmpeg distribution you choose.
- Local video files and enough disk space to keep them accessible while streaming.
- A YouTube channel able to create a live stream, plus its current server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio.
- An upload connection and PC capable of sustaining the resolution, frame rate, and bitrate you select.
This guide sends local files in order; the playlist is not a YouTube playlist URL. No single FFmpeg command is appropriate for every set of files. Check their streams and decide whether to copy their existing encodings or convert them to a consistent output.
Check the videos and choose a playlist method
Inspect the media streams
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text file with one file directive per input and processes those files sequentially. For stream-copy concatenation, the files must expose the same streams, including matching codecs and time bases. FFmpeg also warns that inaccurate duration metadata can cause timestamp shifts and artifacts; differences in stream durations can create gaps.
Inspect each file before choosing the command. If the files have different codecs, stream layouts, or timing characteristics, do not assume that direct concatenation will work cleanly. You may need to transcode them to matching formats or choose another playlist workflow. Transcoding uses more processing capacity than copying already-compatible streams.

Create the concat list
Make a plain-text file, for example playlist.txt, with one file entry per line. Use paths that match the files’ actual locations. A basic list looks like this:

file 'C:/Videos/part2.mp4'FFmpeg’s concat demuxer expects the listed inputs to be compatible. This example illustrates the list format, not a guarantee that those particular files can be joined without conversion. Confirm paths, stream compatibility, and duration information before using it for a live broadcast.

Decide whether the playlist should repeat
A one-pass playlist ends when its final file ends. A continuous loop needs an explicit looping strategy. The FFmpeg concat documentation establishes sequential demuxing, but it does not establish one universal Windows command or loop arrangement for unknown media. Choose the loop method only after validating it against your installed FFmpeg build and files; test it long enough to catch transitions, timestamp gaps, and unexpected stops.
Create the YouTube Live stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create a live stream or schedule one, then open its stream settings.
- Copy the current server URL and stream key shown there. Use the values for this stream rather than relying on an old saved configuration.
- Keep the key private. YouTube describes stream keys as like a stream’s “password and address.” Do not expose it in a public script repository, screenshot, or tutorial. If it may have been compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update FFmpeg with the replacement.
The names and placement of Studio controls can change. Use the current Live Control Room settings as the authority for the URL, key, and available ingest protocol.

Configure FFmpeg for the source and connection
Choose output settings deliberately
YouTube’s encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported video codec options. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. For audio, its guidance lists stereo AAC or MP3 options. These are platform recommendations, not a measurement of your PC or internet connection.
Start with a resolution and frame rate your files and spare PC can handle, and a bitrate your upload connection can sustain. Do not default to 4K or a high frame rate without checking the source, encoder capacity, and upload stability. YouTube transcodes live input for viewer formats, but that does not remove the need to send a stable, suitable feed.

Use the current ingest details in FFmpeg
Configure FFmpeg to read the chosen playlist and send the resulting stream to the server URL and key copied from Live Control Room. The exact command depends on whether you stream-copy or re-encode, the chosen output codecs and settings, the ingest protocol YouTube presents, and whether the playlist repeats. Confirm that your installed FFmpeg build supports the selected protocol; YouTube recommends RTMPS, but the precise command syntax depends on that build and configuration.
Because the input formats, desired output, protocol, and loop behavior are not specified here, a fixed command would risk being wrong for your setup. Use FFmpeg’s current documentation for the options matching your chosen workflow, and keep the stream key out of shared or public files. If you save a command locally, treat the file as a credential-bearing configuration.

Test the stream, then go live
- Run a test using representative video transitions, motion, and audio from the playlist.
- Start FFmpeg ahead of the planned broadcast so YouTube has time to receive the feed.
- Check the stream preview and stream health in Live Control Room. Listen for audio problems and watch for freezes, gaps, or poor quality.
- When the scheduled stream is ready and the preview looks right, use Live Control Room to go live.
- For a scheduled stream, end it in Live Control Room and then stop FFmpeg from sending encoder output.
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on automatic archiving for a stream that exceeds that stated duration.
Troubleshoot common problems
The playlist stops early or has gaps
- Check each path and filename in the text list, including spaces and file extensions.
- Verify that the files have compatible stream layouts, codecs, and time bases if using the concat demuxer for stream copying.
- Check whether duration metadata is accurate. Incorrect durations or files with different stream lengths can cause timestamp artifacts or gaps.
- Test the transition between every pair of files before using the playlist for a public stream.
YouTube does not show a preview
- Confirm FFmpeg is running and sending output.
- Copy the server URL and key again from the current stream settings and check that they belong to the stream you created or scheduled.
- If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in your encoder configuration.
The picture buffers or looks poor
- Reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate to a level the upload connection can sustain.
- Check Live Control Room’s stream health while the test is running.
- Test under conditions representative of the planned broadcast; no general bandwidth or PC-performance figure can guarantee stability for your setup.
The PC cannot keep up with conversion
If transcoding overloads the spare PC, reduce the output demands or use compatible source files that can be stream-copied. Copying avoids the video conversion workload, but only works when the media streams meet the concat demuxer’s compatibility requirements.
