How to Configure FFmpeg Bitrate for a Stable 1080p YouTube Loop Stream

Use YouTube's recommended H.264 rate—14 Mbps at 1080p30 or 17 Mbps at 1080p60—with CBR, a two-second GOP, and enough sustained upload capacity for video and audio.

For a 1080p YouTube loop stream encoded with H.264, start at 14 Mbps for 30 fps or 17 Mbps for 60 fps, use constant bitrate (CBR), and set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube lists those as recommended video bitrates—not guarantees of stability. Your connection must sustain the video rate plus audio and leave room for ordinary network variation. This guide shows how to loop and pace a file with FFmpeg, set the important encoder values, and check the live stream before relying on it.

Choose the bitrate for your frame rate and codec

YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists minimum and recommended video-ingest bitrates for 1080p. For the widely used H.264 option, use the recommended value when your sustained upload capacity can support it; the minimum is a floor, not the preferred target for a stable stream.

1080p frame rate H.264 minimum H.264 recommended AV1 or H.265 minimum AV1 or H.265 recommended
30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps 4 Mbps 10 Mbps
60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps 4 Mbps 12 Mbps

These are YouTube’s video-ingestion figures, not the quality viewers will receive after YouTube processes the stream. The AV1 and H.265 rates are lower in YouTube’s table, but use those codecs only if your installed FFmpeg encoder and YouTube ingest path support your chosen setup. This article’s example uses H.264 with libx264.

For stereo audio, YouTube recommends AAC or MP3 for RTMP/RTMPS, with 128 kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate listed as recommended settings. Add audio capacity to the video rate when assessing the connection. Leave further headroom for normal variation; YouTube does not publish a numeric headroom rule.

Set the ingest values that matter

Use CBR and a two-second keyframe interval

YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe frequency for RTMP/RTMPS, and says not to exceed four seconds. At a constant 30 fps, two seconds is 60 frames; at 60 fps, it is 120 frames. In FFmpeg, set the GOP with -g 60 at 30 fps or -g 120 at 60 fps.

The example below sets -b:v, -maxrate, and -bufsize, but those generic options alone do not prove that the encoder emits strict CBR. If matching YouTube’s CBR recommendation, select and verify the CBR mode supported by the encoder and your local FFmpeg build. Encoder options differ, so check the documentation for the encoder actually in use.

Keep upload capacity ahead of the total stream rate

A short speed-test peak is not evidence that an internet connection will sustain a stream indefinitely. Test the actual upload path over time and choose a bitrate it can reliably carry, including audio and headroom for variation. If the connection cannot reliably sustain the recommended video rate, lower the video bitrate rather than assuming a brief successful test means the stream will remain healthy.

Build a looping FFmpeg command

This illustrative pattern loops an existing file with video and optional audio, encodes at 1080p30 using the H.264 recommended video rate, and sends an RTMPS output. It has not been tested against your local FFmpeg build or network. Replace the endpoint and key using the current settings in YouTube Live Control Room, and validate before relying on it.

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i input.mp4
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0?
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -r 30 -b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M -g 60
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv 'rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_ENDPOINT/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
  1. Replace the input: Change input.mp4 to your file path. -stream_loop -1 requests indefinite looping of that input; it does not make an interrupted network output reconnect on its own.
  2. Keep real-time pacing for a file: -re reads the file at real-time speed. Do not add it blindly to a live capture device or an input that is already live.
  3. Set output values after the input: In FFmpeg, options apply to the next specified file, so placement matters. The input options precede -i; the encoding and output options follow it.
  4. Use the right frame-rate values: This example is 30 fps, 14 Mbps video, and a 60-frame GOP. For 1080p60, change -r 30 to -r 60, use -b:v 17M -maxrate 17M, and set -g 120. Confirm the source and encoder can produce the selected frame rate.
  5. Supply the current ingest destination: Replace the placeholder RTMPS endpoint and stream key with the values shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share a command containing it.

The sample uses AAC stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz. The optional audio map (-map 0:a:0?) permits a file with no audio, but then the output has no audio track. If the file contains multiple tracks or your intended audio is not the first track, select the correct stream explicitly.

For a 1080p60 loop

Use the 60 fps values in the command only if 60 fps is appropriate for the source and your encoder can sustain it. YouTube’s H.264 recommendation is higher at 60 fps, so verify that the connection can carry the increased video rate plus audio and headroom.

Preflight the stream and monitor it live

  1. Confirm the current YouTube stream settings and ingest endpoint in Live Control Room. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension of RTMP.
  2. Run a test using representative movement and audio, not just a static or silent section. YouTube’s guidance says: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream. During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.”
  3. Check stream health and messages in YouTube Live Control Room while the test is running. Confirm that audio is present, video motion is smooth, and the connection sustains the selected rate.
  4. Validate the loop boundary as well as the opening: check that the file returns to its beginning as intended and that audio and video remain acceptable across the transition.

These checks can reveal problems before a long run, but no bitrate value or preflight guarantees uninterrupted delivery. The published recommendations are not a measured reliability result for your file, encoder, computer, or internet connection.

Handle transient output interruptions carefully

FFmpeg documents an optional FIFO muxer pattern for attempting recovery from transient RTMP output interruptions. The relevant options include -f fifo -fifo_format flv -drop_pkts_on_overflow 1 -attempt_recovery 1 -recovery_wait_time 1. This is not a complete replacement command: integrate the FIFO output for your particular invocation, confirm your FFmpeg build includes the needed components, and validate it with the documentation for your installed version.

Recovery is only an attempt. It cannot fix inadequate sustained upload capacity, an overloaded encoder, a power failure, or a YouTube-side outage. A file loop and a network-recovery mechanism solve different problems: -stream_loop -1 repeats the input, while recovery settings address some output interruptions.

Troubleshoot the common failure points

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
YouTube reports unstable or insufficient stream health Available upload capacity may not sustain video, audio, and ordinary network variation. Test sustained upload performance, reduce the video bitrate if needed, and retest under representative conditions.
Stream connects but the loop plays too quickly File input is not being paced in real time. For a file input, use -re before its -i. Do not apply it indiscriminately to a live input.
Video is not 1080p or the expected frame rate The source, output frame-rate setting, or encoder behavior may not match the intended format. Check the source and output configuration locally; the example sets frame rate but does not include a scaling filter to resize other resolutions to 1080p.
Audio is absent The input may lack an audio stream, or the optional map may have selected none. Check the input’s streams and map the intended audio explicitly. The sample’s optional map allows the command to proceed without audio.
Stream stops when the file reaches its end The input loop option may be missing or the command may not be running the intended input. Confirm -stream_loop -1 is placed before the relevant -i and that the process remains running.
FFmpeg rejects encoder or recovery options The locally installed build may not support the selected encoder or muxer options. Check the installed FFmpeg version and its local encoder/muxer documentation; builds and hardware encoders vary.
Output disconnects and does not resume A transient interruption may exceed what the configured recovery can handle, or the cause may be sustained capacity, encoder, power, or platform failure. Check FFmpeg and YouTube messages, address the underlying failure, and treat FIFO recovery as a limited attempt rather than a continuity guarantee.
