If a YouTube stream hosted on EC2 stops after a few hours, first determine whether YouTube ended the broadcast, the encoder or EC2 host stopped sending, viewers merely lost playback, or only the archive is missing. Compare YouTube’s stream-health messages with encoder logs and EC2 network and system evidence at the same timestamp. The reported location—India—does not by itself establish an India-specific cause.
First identify what “stops” means
Record the failure time and timezone, then check each part of the path rather than treating every symptom as a broadcast ending.
- Live Control Room says ended or offline: investigate whether the encoder stopped sending or an operator ended the scheduled stream. YouTube says stopping content from the encoder ends the stream; a scheduled stream can also be ended in Live Control Room.
- The live watch page stopped updating, but status is unclear: compare the page with Live Control Room and ask whether more than one viewer saw the issue. One viewer’s buffering does not prove the broadcast ended.
- The encoder process exited or logged a disconnect: investigate the encoder, host, and outbound network path at that time.
- The live broadcast worked but no recording appeared: check archive eligibility before diagnosing a stream failure. YouTube automatically archives eligible streams shorter than 12 hours; a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. That archive warning is not a stated maximum live-stream duration.
Compare YouTube and EC2 evidence at the same time
A useful diagnosis needs time-aligned evidence from both ends. The exact EC2 instance type and Region, encoder software and configuration, failure timestamp, logs, YouTube health messages, and network measurements are not specified here, so none can be named as the cause in advance.
1. Check YouTube’s stream health
In YouTube Live Control Room, review the stream-health status and messages from the event. Compare their timestamps with the watch page and encoder output. YouTube recommends testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. A message coinciding with the failure can help distinguish an ingest or stream-health problem from an encoder process that simply stopped.

2. Check the encoder process and EC2 host
At the same timestamp, inspect the encoder’s output and the operating-system or service logs. Look for process exit, reported encoding errors, disconnects, reconnect attempts, and CPU load preceding the incident. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking encoder errors and CPU load; if the encoder appears healthy, test the outbound internet connection.
On EC2, correlate instance network metrics and, where available, ENA driver network-performance metrics with the logs. AWS says these can show bandwidth, packet activity, and exceeded instance-level network allowances. Short microbursts may not appear in ordinary CloudWatch periods. If the instance itself became unreachable, AWS identifies console output as useful for diagnosing kernel and service-configuration issues.

3. Check the outbound path and available bandwidth
YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream and advises keeping total streaming bitrate within available upload bandwidth with headroom. For an EC2 encoder, assess the instance’s effective outbound path and concurrent traffic; a speed test on a viewer’s home connection does not measure the cloud host’s path.
Check whether packet loss, network allowance exceedance, or a bandwidth change lines up with the stop time. A single metric without matching timestamps is weaker evidence than a network event that coincides with YouTube health messages or encoder disconnects.

Test whether EC2 network allowances fit the failure
AWS documents that bandwidth depends on instance type and network allowances. Some smaller instance types marked “up to” use network I/O credits: after credits are exhausted, bandwidth returns to baseline. AWS describes typical burst durations of 5–60 minutes depending on instance size.
This makes credit exhaustion a hypothesis to test, not a general explanation for a stream that lasts “a few hours.” The documented typical burst duration is not a promised failure time, and the exact instance type, bitrate, competing traffic, or metrics for this case are not specified. Look up the exact instance’s baseline and burst behavior, then verify whether metrics show allowance exceedance, packet loss, or reduced throughput at the failure time. The available evidence does not establish an India-specific YouTube ingest defect or a special cause tied to an Indian AWS Region.

Review encoder settings after checking the evidence
Settings can prevent avoidable instability, but they do not identify what caused a particular stop. YouTube’s published encoder guidance documents RTMP and RTMPS, recommends RTMPS and constant bitrate (CBR), and recommends a two-second keyframe interval with four seconds as the maximum.
Use YouTube’s bitrate guidance for the actual codec, resolution, and frame rate; there is no single bitrate that fits every profile. Ensure the total outbound stream traffic fits the available path with headroom. Test with representative audio and motion before an important broadcast, and monitor stream health while live.

Add failover only after defining what it protects
A backup encoder can reduce dependence on one encoder path for an important event, but it does not explain why the primary stopped. YouTube recommends exercising failover—for example, stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet cable—and confirming that the player rolls over. Test the actual setup before relying on it during a broadcast.
