1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSet FFmpeg’s bitrate for the YouTube Live codec, resolution and frame rate you plan to send, then leave enough upload headroom for the stream and other network traffic. For H.264 SDR, YouTube’s current English live-encoder table recommends 8 Mbps for 720p30 and 14 Mbps for 1080p30. Those are ingest recommendations, not proof that an Indian fiber connection can sustain them: measure upload performance on the actual streaming connection, including at busy times.
Choose the YouTube Live profile before setting FFmpeg
Use YouTube’s live ingest guidance for your chosen codec and format—not its separate recommendations for prerecorded uploads. YouTube’s current English live-encoder table lists these H.264 values:
| H.264 ingest format | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 360p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 0.4 Mbps | 4 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s published configuration values; the page does not state a publication year, and platform guidance can change. The same page gives separate recommendations for AV1 and H.265/HEVC, so do not apply the H.264 row to a different ingest codec. Higher resolution and frame rate generally need more bitrate for comparable quality. For a game stream, fast camera movement, foliage, particles and detailed scenes can also make compression more visible.
For an ordinary 30 fps H.264 stream, use 720p30 at 8 Mbps or 1080p30 at 14 Mbps as the platform-recommended targets only if your measured connection can sustain them with margin. YouTube also publishes minimums; these are not equivalent to the recommended targets. When the uplink cannot support a recommended profile reliably, choose a lower resolution, frame rate or bitrate and test the result rather than running the connection at its limit.

Translate the target into FFmpeg options
For a software H.264 encode with libx264, -b:v sets the target video bitrate, -maxrate limits the peak rate, and -bufsize controls the rate-control buffer. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR)-style output, a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMP or RTMPS ingestion. With x264, matching target and maximum rates is a common way to approximate CBR behavior; a buffer value is an encoder choice, not a YouTube-mandated multiple.
Example: 1080p30 H.264 from a prerecorded file
ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
-b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
-f flv "rtmps://a.rtmp.youtube.com/live2/STREAM_KEY"
This is an illustrative command, not a tested guarantee for every FFmpeg build, input or stream key. It assumes a 30 fps output: -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP, or two seconds at 30 fps. If your input does not match the intended output dimensions or frame rate, explicitly configure and verify the output format rather than assuming the input is already 1080p30. Replace 14M with the bitrate for the profile you have chosen and can support. The example’s 28M buffer is a setting, not a platform requirement.

Example: 720p30 H.264
For a 720p30 target, change the video target and peak limit to YouTube’s 8 Mbps recommendation, and keep the two-second keyframe interval: at 30 fps that is still -g 60. If setting a buffer explicitly, choose it as part of your encoder rate-control configuration; YouTube does not require a particular buffer multiple. If your broadband upload cannot sustain 8 Mbps plus margin, select a lower bitrate or smaller output profile and test it.
For a live game capture instead of a file
Replace -i input.mp4 with the appropriate capture input for your operating system and FFmpeg build. The exact input device and syntax depend on the capture hardware and system; the bitrate, audio, keyframe and RTMPS considerations above still apply to the encoded output. Confirm the output frame rate, resolution and encoder in the FFmpeg log before relying on the command.

Keep the stream key private. In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream key for the intended stream and monitor the ingest status and stream health once sending video. If you disclose the key, replace or reset it in YouTube before streaming again.
Check whether Indian fiber upload can sustain the stream
A fiber connection label, advertised download speed or one speed-test result does not establish a stable bitrate for a 24/7 broadcast. Actual usable upload depends on the ISP plan, location, time of day, other household traffic and the stability of the route to YouTube. There is no single upload figure that can be assumed for Indian fiber broadband as a whole.

- Measure upload from the streaming computer and network. Test at likely busy hours as well as quieter periods. A speed test is a snapshot, not evidence of uninterrupted capacity.
- Use upload, not download, as your constraint. YouTube’s network tips recommend leaving room between total outgoing bitrate and available upload bandwidth; the stated guidance is 20% headroom. That is guidance, not a guarantee that a variable link will never drop.
- Count the whole uplink load. Video and audio, protocol overhead, and other devices’ traffic all consume capacity. Do not set the encoder to the full measured peak.
- Test the actual stream. Send representative footage and audio to YouTube before relying on a profile. Watch Live Control Room’s stream health while the encode is running.
- Reduce the profile if the link fluctuates. Lower bitrate, resolution or frame rate, then repeat the test. A stable lower-resolution stream is often more useful than a higher-quality profile that leaves too little headroom.
For a continuous stream, separately consider power, router and ONT uptime, heat, source-file continuity, and how the process will be noticed and restarted if it exits. Correct bitrate settings alone cannot promise uninterrupted service, and the cited platform guidance does not establish a universal ISP uptime guarantee or data cap for 24/7 use in India.
Check keyframes, audio and ingest health
- Keyframes: YouTube recommends a two-second interval and says not to exceed four seconds. For a fixed frame rate, set the GOP in frames accordingly; for example, 60 frames at 30 fps is two seconds.
- Rate control: YouTube recommends CBR. Matching
-b:vand-maxrateis a common x264 approach, but monitor the actual output and stream health. - Audio: YouTube accepts AAC or MP3. The example uses AAC stereo at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz; use an audio configuration appropriate to the source and check that audio is present at ingest.
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS. The example uses RTMPS; your selected endpoint and key must match the stream configured in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Pixel format: The example uses
yuv420p, a broadly compatible H.264 output choice. Confirm the installed FFmpeg build includes the encoder and options you intend to use.
Troubleshoot buffering, dropped frames and disconnects
| Symptom | Likely cause to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube reports an unstable or poor stream | Outgoing bitrate is too close to upload capacity, or competing traffic is using the uplink. | Measure upload again under realistic conditions, reduce bitrate or output format, and retest with the full stream running. |
| Stream drops even though a speed test looked fast | The test was only a snapshot; upload may vary by time, network load or route. | Test at busy hours and monitor YouTube’s health during a representative run. Leave headroom rather than matching a peak result. |
| Video looks blocky during fast gameplay | The chosen bitrate may be too low for the resolution, frame rate and motion in the source. | Compare the stream against YouTube’s recommendation for the actual ingest format. If bandwidth is constrained, weigh a lower resolution or frame rate against a higher bitrate. |
| Keyframe warning or delayed stream behavior | GOP interval may exceed the platform guidance or may not match the output frame rate. | Set a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Recalculate GOP frames if the frame rate changes. |
| No video reaches YouTube | Wrong endpoint or key, unavailable encoder, or an FFmpeg input/encoding error. | Check FFmpeg’s log, verify libx264 is available in the installed build, and confirm the endpoint and private key in Live Control Room. |
| Stream stops during a long run | The encoder process, source, local power, router or ONT may have stopped; bitrate alone does not explain every interruption. | Check process and device logs, confirm the source remains available, and set up monitoring and a recovery/restart plan. |

Copyright and YouTube monetization still matter
A technically healthy stream does not establish that you have the rights to its video or audio, or that it qualifies for monetization. Before looping a game recording, music or other material, check the applicable rights and YouTube’s policies. Replaying content continuously does not itself make it original or eligible for monetization. Review the copyright safety checklist before scheduling a long-running stream.
