To copy FFmpeg logs from a VPS, first save or locate the log on the server, then download it from your own computer with scp. For a new FFmpeg run, use -report or FFREPORT; for an existing systemd service, export the relevant time window with journalctl. The right method depends on how FFmpeg was started—an already-running process cannot necessarily produce a complete report after the fact.
Choose the log source that matches how FFmpeg was started
| Situation | Where to look | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| You are starting or restarting FFmpeg | An FFmpeg report file | -report or FFREPORT writes a report for that invocation. The default destination for FFmpeg logging is stderr. |
| FFmpeg is an existing systemd service | The system journal | This works only if the service’s output is captured by the journal and you have permission to read it. |
| FFmpeg runs another way, or output is redirected | The supervisor, terminal session, or configured log file | Find the actual stdout/stderr destination or process-manager logs; there is no universal path for every VPS. |
First identify whether the process is still running and how it was launched. Check the service definition or startup script, the command used to start FFmpeg, and any configured redirection. Do not assume the server uses systemd.
Save a report from a new FFmpeg run
Use -report for a straightforward capture
Add -report to the FFmpeg command and keep the input and output arguments you already use:
ffmpeg -report [existing FFmpeg input and output arguments]
The bracketed phrase is explanatory; replace it with your actual arguments rather than typing it literally. Run the command from a directory the account can write to. FFmpeg creates a timestamp-named report in its current working directory. The report includes the command line and log output, and -report implies debug log verbosity, so the resulting file may be large.

After the run starts or ends, list files in that working directory and check the report’s timestamp and size. If you cannot find it, verify the process’s working directory and the account’s write permissions.
Choose a filename and log level with FFREPORT
To specify a report filename and use the documented numeric example for info-level output, set the environment variable for the FFmpeg invocation:
FFREPORT=file=ffreport.log:level=32 ffmpeg [existing arguments]
Replace [existing arguments] with your real FFmpeg options. The file path is relative to the working directory unless you specify a path. FFmpeg notes that errors parsing FFREPORT are not fatal and may not appear in the report, so confirm the file exists and is non-empty instead of assuming the setting worked.

Export logs from an existing systemd service
View a recent window for the correct unit
If FFmpeg is managed by systemd and its standard output or error is connected to the journal, query the actual unit name. For example, to display the last 30 minutes without opening a pager:
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11sudo journalctl -u your-ffmpeg-service.service --since '30 minutes ago' --no-pager
Replace your-ffmpeg-service.service with the service’s real unit name. The -u option filters journal entries by unit. Journal access depends on the VPS’s permissions and configuration; use an account with permitted access or ask an authorized administrator.
Save a bounded time range to a file
Redirect a selected interval to a text file on the VPS. These dates are an example window; replace them with the time of the failure and the timezone you intend to inspect:

sudo journalctl -u your-ffmpeg-service.service --since '2026-10-03 20:00:00 UTC' --until '2026-10-03 20:30:00 UTC' --no-pager > ffmpeg-journal.log
The output file is created in the shell’s current working directory, subject to write permissions. Check that the file exists and contains the expected interval before downloading it. Using --no-pager and redirecting output avoids relying on what happens to be visible in a terminal.
Find logs when FFmpeg is not a systemd service
If the process was started by a different supervisor, from an interactive terminal, or with shell redirection, look at that specific setup. A supervisor may have its own log command or files; a shell command may have redirected stderr or both output streams to a file. If the terminal session has ended and output was never saved, it may not be recoverable as a complete historical log.

Download the log to your computer with scp
Run scp in a terminal on your local computer—not in the VPS shell. Substitute your VPS login, host, and the actual remote file path:
scp [email protected]:/path/to/ffmpeg-journal.log .
The final dot means “save in the current local directory.” For a file in the remote account’s home directory, use its actual absolute path or a path such as ~/ffreport.log. OpenSSH scp transfers files over SSH; since OpenSSH 9.0, it uses SFTP over SSH by default.
Use a non-default SSH port when needed
Specify an alternate port with uppercase -P:
scp -P 2222 [email protected]:/path/to/ffmpeg-journal.log .
Do not confuse uppercase -P, which selects the port, with lowercase -p, which preserves file times and mode bits. If the transfer fails, confirm the SSH hostname, username, port, identity key, remote path, and that your local computer has an OpenSSH client.

Match FFmpeg output to YouTube’s stream diagnostics
Use timestamps to correlate the copied log with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health errors. YouTube’s diagnostics can help distinguish an encoder or configuration symptom from an outbound-connectivity problem. Review the encoder’s picture and sound, encoder errors and CPU load, an archive if available, and outbound internet connectivity. YouTube’s error guidance also covers ingest format and codecs, bitrate, audio/video configuration, keyframe frequency, and resolution. Start with YouTube’s troubleshooting live stream errors and compare the displayed error times with the relevant interval in your report or journal export.
Troubleshoot missing, incomplete, or failed log copies
- No report appeared: Check that FFmpeg was run with
-reportor a validFFREPORT, that you looked in its working directory, and that the account could write there. Confirm the report is not empty. - You need logs from a process that is already running: Determine where its stderr goes. A report option added to a later run cannot retroactively capture the earlier run’s full output.
journalctlreturns no relevant entries: Verify the unit name and time window, confirm FFmpeg output is journal-connected, and check journal permissions. If systemd is not involved, inspect the actual supervisor or redirection destination.- The terminal output looks incomplete: Use
--no-pagerand redirect the selected journal output to a file. A terminal display or pager is not a reliable substitute for preserving the full selected window. scpreports an authentication or path error: Check the SSH user, host, port, key, and remote path. Run the command locally and verify you have an OpenSSH client.- YouTube reports an ingest or stream-health error: Compare its timestamp with the FFmpeg log, then inspect the relevant encoder, connection, or stream configuration details rather than treating every failure as a VPS file-transfer issue.
Prepare a useful, safe troubleshooting report
Before sharing a log, inspect it and the FFmpeg command line for stream keys, tokens, private URLs, IP addresses, or other sensitive details. Redact credentials while keeping the error text and timestamps intact. Include the FFmpeg version/build banner, the command with secrets removed, what you expected to happen, what happened instead, and whether the problem can be reproduced. These details make the log more useful without exposing access credentials.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos rather than troubleshoot a VPS-hosted FFmpeg process, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; the cloud loops the uploaded video, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded video on YouTube, not a live camera feed. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
