How to Add a Background Image to an Audio-Only FFmpeg YouTube Stream

Loop a still image as FFmpeg video while sending a separate audio file to YouTube Live, with an illustrative command and practical setup checks.

Use the still image as FFmpeg’s video input and your audio file as its audio input, then map both into a YouTube-compatible stream. The image2 input can loop a still indefinitely; YouTube Live provides the ingest address and stream key. The command below is an illustrative starting point, not a tested command.

Build the FFmpeg command

Replace the file paths, ingest address, and key with your own. The example uses H.264 video, AAC audio, 30 fps, and an illustrative 5 Mbps video bitrate; check YouTube’s current recommendations and your connection before using those settings.

ffmpeg
  -loop 1 -framerate 30 -i "background.jpg"
  -re -i "audio.mp3"
  -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage
  -pix_fmt yuv420p -r 30 -g 60 -b:v 5M -maxrate 5M -bufsize 10M
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://INGEST_ADDRESS/STREAM_KEY"

What the inputs and options do

  • -loop 1 loops the still image. FFmpeg’s image2 demuxer documents looping as an option; its default is not to loop. FFmpeg image2 documentation.
  • -framerate 30 sets the generated frame rate for the image input. Input options go before the corresponding -i, so both options appear before -i "background.jpg".
  • -re asks FFmpeg to read the audio input at its native rate for live-style output. Check that it suits your source and FFmpeg version.
  • -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0 explicitly selects video from input 0 (the image) and audio from input 1.
  • -c:v libx264 selects H.264 encoding; -tune stillimage is an encoder tuning choice for this static picture. -pix_fmt yuv420p and -r 30 set pixel format and output frame rate.
  • -g 60 sets a 60-frame GOP at 30 fps, equivalent to a two-second interval if the encoder honors it. -b:v, -maxrate, and -bufsize set video rate-control parameters; the sample values are not universal targets.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 selects AAC audio, an example audio bitrate, and a 44.1 kHz sample rate.
  • -f flv uses the output container commonly used with RTMP-style ingest. The example URL is deliberately a placeholder, not a usable credential.

Get the live ingest address and key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or select the live stream you intend to use.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream into the command’s output URL. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or share it.
  3. Use the exact URL and key/name YouTube displays. The YouTube Live API describes a stream name supplied separately or appended to an ingestion URL as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME; do not assume every encoder or stream setup expects the same formatting. YouTube Live Streaming API: LiveStreams.
  4. Run the command and verify that YouTube receives audio and video before starting the public event.

YouTube’s encoder setup instructions direct creators to enter the server URL and stream key in their encoder. See Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder. YouTube recommends RTMPS; use the RTMPS address supplied for the stream where available. Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Choose settings that match YouTube and your connection

YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS video ingest; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR; frame rates up to 60 fps; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with a four-second maximum. Its recommended video bitrate depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate. For example, YouTube lists 14 Mbps for 1080p30 H.264 and 10 Mbps for 1080p30 AV1 or H.265/HEVC. These are codec- and profile-specific recommendations, not a guarantee that a given connection can sustain them.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Resolution and bitrate

The example command does not set a resolution explicitly, so the encoded dimensions depend on the input and encoder behavior. If you need a specific output size, add a scale filter, for example -vf "scale=1920:1080" for a 1080p frame, and ensure the source image’s aspect ratio is handled as intended. Avoid stretching a square or portrait image to fill a widescreen frame unless that is the look you want; you can instead prepare a correctly composed background image beforehand.

Set a bitrate that corresponds to the output resolution, frame rate, and codec in YouTube’s current settings table, and leave headroom in your reliable upload capacity. The sample’s 5 Mbps is only an illustration, not YouTube’s 1080p30 H.264 recommendation. YouTube creates multiple playback formats for viewers, but that does not remove the need for a stable encoder-to-ingest connection.

Keyframes and frame rate

At 30 fps, -g 60 requests keyframes about every two seconds. If you change the frame rate, adjust the GOP size to keep the interval near two seconds and within YouTube’s four-second maximum. Encoder behavior can differ, so check FFmpeg’s output and YouTube’s stream health messages during a test.

Test before going live

Use a test with the same image, audio, frame rate, and approximate output bitrate you plan to use. YouTube advises testing with audio and video movement similar to the planned stream, then monitoring stream health and messages. Although the video is a still, verify that it remains present while the audio plays and that the audio level is appropriate.

Troubleshoot common problems

Symptom Check and fix
No video reaches YouTube Confirm the image path is correct, image input options are before its -i, and -map 0:v:0 is present. Check FFmpeg output for an image-loading error.
The image disappears or ends too soon Verify -loop 1 appears before the image input’s -i. The image2 loop option is otherwise documented with a default of 0. FFmpeg image2 documentation.
YouTube does not receive the stream Make sure the intended stream is created or selected in Live Control Room, then re-copy its active server URL and stream key/name. Check the ingest address format rather than reusing the placeholder command URL.
YouTube flags connection or quality problems Compare the actual codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current table. Run a representative test and check stream health instead of assuming one bitrate works for every setup.
The stream keeps running after the audio file ends The image loops independently, but the audio input does not loop in this command. For continuous audio, provide a longer audio source or configure an appropriate audio-looping workflow for your FFmpeg build; confirm the resulting duration and behavior in a test before relying on it.

End the stream and check the archive

Stop FFmpeg to stop sending encoder content. YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; see its encoder streaming guidance for starting, stopping, and archiving details.
