First identify the exact FFmpeg binary your service uses, review the Ubuntu package candidate and its changes, and test the replacement off-air. For continuity, switch to a tested backup encoder before updating or restarting the primary.
1. Identify the FFmpeg your stream actually uses
Ubuntu’s FFmpeg version depends on the Ubuntu release and enabled repository suite; the package candidate is not necessarily the latest upstream release. Check the host and service before changing packages. [Ubuntu package listings]

Find the service that launches the encoder and inspect its command, user, working directory, and environment. For a systemd service, use
systemctl status SERVICEandsystemctl cat SERVICE, replacingSERVICEwith the unit name. Look for the full executable path and any wrapper script. -
Check the Ubuntu release and the FFmpeg resolved in your current shell:
cat /etc/os-release,command -v ffmpeg, andffmpeg -version. A service may use a different path from your interactive shell, so verify the path shown in its command rather than assuming these results match.Recommended Free Tools

For the executable path you found, check package ownership with
dpkg -S /path/to/ffmpeg. If it is owned by an Ubuntu package, inspect installed and candidate versions withapt-cache policy ffmpeg. If it is not package-owned, it may be a custom or static build; an Ubuntu package upgrade may not update the binary that your service runs. -
Inspect the service’s input, output, codecs, and relevant FFmpeg options. Preserve the complete command and configuration. The update should not be the moment you discover that the replacement cannot read your input, encode your formats, or reach YouTube.
2. Make a continuity and rollback plan
Choose a maintenance window and know how the stream will stay available if the primary encoder must stop. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover before an event; a second encoder is useful only if it has been configured and tested for your stream. [YouTube: Use a backup encoder]

Save a copy of the service unit, configuration files, and current working command. Record the binary path and version actually used.

Know how you would restore the previous executable or package version, and verify that the required package version remains available to your system. Treat rollback as an operator-prepared plan, not as an automatic guarantee from Ubuntu or apt.

Decide the handoff order: bring up the tested backup encoder, verify its YouTube preview and health, then update or restart the primary. If you have no tested backup, schedule for a period when a brief interruption is acceptable rather than assuming an in-place package operation will preserve the stream.
3. Review Ubuntu’s package candidate before installing
For a package-managed installation, prefer the repositories configured for your Ubuntu release for routine supported updates. Ubuntu security notices list fixed package versions by release and say standard system updates generally apply the necessary security changes; use the notice and your host’s candidate to establish whether an update is relevant to your system. Refresh package metadata with
sudo apt update. -
Review the candidate with
apt-cache policy ffmpeg. Check that the candidate comes from the repository suite you intend to use and fits your Ubuntu release.Recommended: PC Feels Slow? Simulate the package operation with
sudo apt-get -s install ffmpeg. Read the proposed installs, upgrades, removals, and dependency changes. If the changes are unexpected, stop and investigate rather than approving them blindly. -
When the candidate and planned changes are acceptable, use your normal maintenance procedure to install the update. A package update does not by itself document a universal requirement to reset your YouTube stream key.
4. Test the replacement build off-air
Before switching production traffic, confirm that the new executable is the one you expect and that it supports the codecs and options your command needs. Run your input and encoding workflow in a test environment or with a test stream, then check YouTube’s preview before starting the live event. YouTube recommends testing before going live and checking the preview. [YouTube encoder setup and testing]
For YouTube ingest, its H.264 guidance recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 14 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees that a particular host, connection, or stream will remain stable. [YouTube encoder settings]

Check that the test has the intended resolution, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe interval, audio, and ingest destination. YouTube recommends RTMPS for an encrypted connection. Your encoder’s output settings must match the platform’s current guidance for the chosen stream format. [YouTube encoder settings]

Start the tested backup encoder or other prepared fallback using the intended stream configuration.

Open YouTube Live Control Room and confirm the incoming preview and stream health before touching the primary process. YouTube recommends preparing and testing failover and checking the preview.

Once the backup is confirmed, update or restart the primary according to the way your service is managed. The effect of replacing an executable or libraries on a running FFmpeg process depends on how that process was launched and what it has loaded; there is no general guarantee that updating packages leaves an existing stream untouched.

Test the updated primary off-air, then switch back only when its output is verified. Avoid an unplanned overlap or handoff: follow your encoder and YouTube setup so only the intended feed is active.
6. Verify the update and recover if something fails
After the handoff, check the stream in Live Control Room and inspect the encoder service’s logs. YouTube’s guidance is: “During the event, monitor the stream health and review messages.” [YouTube stream health guidance]
- Service will not start: inspect the unit logs and confirm its executable path, permissions, configuration, and FFmpeg options. Compare them with the saved working configuration.
- FFmpeg starts but fails to encode: check the replacement build’s available codecs and whether the input and options are supported. Use the tested backup while diagnosing.
- YouTube receives no usable signal or the preview is wrong: confirm the output destination, video and audio settings, and stream key configuration. A package update alone is not documented as requiring a new key.
- Stream health degrades or the connection drops: review YouTube’s messages and the encoder’s logs; return to the tested backup if it is healthy. Do not wait for an unverified primary to recover while the channel is offline.
- The key was reset or exposed: update the encoder with the new key. YouTube treats the stream key as an encoder credential and supports resetting it; reset is not a routine FFmpeg update step. [YouTube stream keys]
