For one continuous YouTube playlist, the standard Mac mini M2 appears capable of ordinary video playback; the available specifications do not show that you need an M4 just to play a playlist. The M4 adds documented AV1 decoding, but that is a format capability—not proof of better buffering, unattended playback, or continuity. Choose between them based on the computer’s price, configuration, and other work you expect it to do, rather than assuming the newer chip will keep YouTube running without interruption.
What the M2 and M4 specifications establish
Apple lists a video decode engine and hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, and ProRes support for both the 2023 standard M2 Mac mini and the 2024 standard M4 Mac mini. The M4 specifications also list AV1 decoding. Those are documented hardware capabilities; they do not establish which formats YouTube will serve in a particular session or how reliably a browser will keep a playlist playing unattended.
| Specification | Mac mini M2 (2023) | Mac mini M4 (2024) |
|---|---|---|
| Standard CPU / GPU | 8-core CPU / 10-core GPU | 10-core CPU / 10-core GPU |
| Listed media capabilities | Video decode engine; hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, and ProRes | Video decode engine; hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, ProRes, and AV1 decoding |
| Listed networking | Wi-Fi 6E and Gigabit Ethernet | Wi-Fi 6E and Gigabit Ethernet |

Does AV1 make the M4 better for YouTube?
Apple lists AV1 decoding for the M4 but not for the M2 specifications cited here. That makes AV1 a documented point of difference. It does not show that YouTube will deliver AV1 to your device, that playback will look different, or that a playlist will run longer or more reliably on an M4. The specification alone is not evidence of a practical advantage for this particular workload.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Power figures are not YouTube playback measurements
Apple’s published power table lists 7W idle and 50W CPU maximum for a Mac mini (2023) M2 configuration with 24GB unified memory and 2TB SSD. For a Mac mini (2024) M4 configuration with 16GB unified memory and 256GB SSD, it lists 4W idle and 65W maximum. These are different configurations, and Apple labels the M2 maximum column “CPU Max” while the M4 table says “Max.” They are not like-for-like measurements and neither figure describes continuous YouTube playback.
Apple separately lists a maximum continuous power rating of 150W for the standard M2 and 155W for the M4. These are electrical specifications, not expected or measured consumption while streaming a playlist. See Apple’s Mac mini power consumption and thermal output information.

Networking and continuity depend on more than the chip
Both models list Wi-Fi 6E and Gigabit Ethernet, so each offers wireless and wired networking options. Those specifications do not tell you how stable your actual internet connection is. A newer processor cannot by itself establish that buffering will stop or that YouTube will keep a playlist advancing.
Continuous playback also involves YouTube’s playlist and autoplay behavior, browser state, network conditions, and macOS sleep behavior. The cited Apple specifications do not document those service and software behaviors, and they do not provide settings for an unattended YouTube session. This comparison therefore cannot promise that either model will play continuously without intervention or prescribe verified browser and sleep settings.

Which Mac mini should you choose?
- Choose the M2 if: your main requirement is ordinary playback of one YouTube playlist and its price and configuration suit you. The cited specifications list video decoding and common hardware-accelerated formats; they do not show an M4 is required for this task.
- Consider the M4 if: you also want its newer listed specifications, including AV1 decoding, for other workloads. Do not treat that capability as a guarantee of better playlist continuity.
- For either model: compare the actual purchase price and configuration available to you, and assess your network separately. Current prices and a controlled M2-versus-M4 YouTube playback test are not established here.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded videos playing as a 24/7 YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a different approach from leaving a Mac mini playing a YouTube playlist: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops the uploaded videos in the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Any quality up to 4K 60fps streams as uploaded at one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding. StreamNeo also automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start your free day.
