To send a live stream from FFmpeg to YouTube using H.264 video and AAC audio, encode the input with an H.264 video encoder and an AAC audio encoder, use constant bitrate (CBR), set keyframes about every two seconds, and send the output to your YouTube Live destination over RTMPS when your FFmpeg build supports it. The example below assumes a local video file; capture devices and other inputs need source-specific input options.
Choose the YouTube settings first
YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264 video and AAC audio for RTMP/RTMPS, recommends CBR, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval. It says not to exceed four seconds. These are ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular computer or upload connection can sustain the stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions (undated, live-maintained page; verified 2026-10-03).
Match bitrate to resolution and frame rate
Use the H.264 recommendation for the output resolution and frame rate you intend to send. YouTube currently recommends these example combinations:
| Output | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
The bitrate table is YouTube’s guidance, verified 2026-10-03, rather than a measured performance result. Choose a rate your sustained upload connection can support; YouTube advises allowing headroom and checking stream health. Its page lists higher resolutions as well, so consult the live table if you plan to stream above 1080p.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set audio and keyframe cadence
- For stereo AAC, YouTube lists 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 Kbps. For 5.1 audio it lists 48 kHz and 384 Kbps; 5.1 over RTMP/RTMPS requires AAC.
- A two-second keyframe interval translates to a GOP size in frames. At 30 fps, that is 60 frames; at 60 fps, 120 frames. Do not copy a frame-count value without matching it to the output frame rate.
- YouTube’s maximum interval is four seconds. Setting a two-second GOP meets its recommendation.
Prepare the YouTube destination and FFmpeg
- Set up the live stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the scheduled/live stream and retrieve its server URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not post it, commit it to a repository, or include it in a public command transcript. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP; use the RTMPS server URL supplied for your stream.
- Check your FFmpeg build. Encoder and protocol availability vary across builds. Run
ffmpeg -encodersand confirm an H.264 encoder and an AAC encoder are listed;ffmpeg -protocolscan help check protocol support. The encoder might be namedlibx264, but that is not guaranteed to be present. Use an available H.264 encoder and consult its options if its name or controls differ. - Identify the input streams. For a file, inspect it with
ffmpeg -i input.mp4. If it contains multiple audio or video streams, use explicit-mapoptions to select the intended ones. For a capture device, network source, or other input, use the input syntax and options appropriate to that source.
FFmpeg processes options in order: an option normally applies to the next input or output. Put input-specific options before -i; put output encoding options after the input and before the output URL. The official FFmpeg command-line documentation explains option scope, stream mapping, transcoding, and streamcopy.
Example: encode a local file and send it to YouTube
This template assumes input.mp4 contains the video and stereo audio you want to stream, and that your FFmpeg build includes libx264, AAC encoding, and RTMPS support. It targets 1080p30 with YouTube’s current 14 Mbps H.264 recommendation. Replace the server URL and key with the values for your YouTube stream. Do not share a real key.

-f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_SERVER/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
This is an illustrative starting point, not a command tested against every FFmpeg build or YouTube stream setup. The RTMPS path and accepted URL format depend on the server URL YouTube gives you and the protocol support in your installation. If your encoder does not accept an option, check that encoder’s help and use the equivalent supported control rather than assuming all builds behave identically.
What the important options do
-rereads a file at its native rate instead of sending it as fast as possible. For a real-time capture input, follow that source’s recommended timing behavior instead.-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a:0selects the first video and first audio stream from input 0. Adjust the stream indexes or maps if the intended tracks differ.-c:v libx264selects the H.264 encoder when it is available.-preset veryfasttrades some compression efficiency for less encoding work; choose a slower preset only if the computer can encode without falling behind.-tune zerolatencyis a low-latency x264 tuning choice, not a YouTube requirement.-r 30targets 30 output frames per second.-g 60sets a 60-frame GOP, which at 30 fps corresponds to two seconds.-keyint_min 60and-sc_threshold 0are x264 controls intended to keep keyframe spacing regular; encoder controls differ, so verify behavior for your chosen encoder.-b:v,-minrate, and-maxraterequest a 14 Mbps CBR-style video rate with x264;-bufsize 28Msets a two-second video buffer target. YouTube’s requirement is CBR guidance; exact rate-control controls can vary by encoder.-pix_fmt yuv420pselects a widely compatible pixel format. It can require conversion if the input uses another format.-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2encodes stereo AAC at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz, matching YouTube’s listed stereo audio values.-f flvselects the RTMP-family output container used for this ingest workflow. The output options appear before the destination URL, as FFmpeg’s command syntax requires.
For 1080p60, change the frame-rate and GOP choices to 60 fps and 120 frames, and use YouTube’s 17 Mbps recommendation. For 720p, set the output dimensions as needed and use the applicable 8 Mbps recommendation shown above. If resizing, add an appropriate video filter such as -vf scale=1280:720; ensure that the dimensions and frame rate you send match the bitrate choice. Do not upscale a lower-resolution source expecting it to create detail that is not present.

Transcoding, streamcopy, and source-specific changes
To convert incompatible input codecs to H.264 and AAC, use video and audio encoders as in the example. FFmpeg calls this transcoding: it decodes and re-encodes the media, which is computationally more expensive and can reduce quality because encoding is typically lossy.
-c copy is streamcopy: it passes encoded packets without decoding and re-encoding. It does not convert video to H.264 or audio to AAC. Use it only when the source codecs and stream characteristics already suit the output and YouTube ingest; otherwise specify encoders.

For a webcam, capture card, or game capture source, replace the file input with the device or capture input for your operating system and FFmpeg build. Device names, input formats, and options are not universal, so first confirm the source’s actual video and audio streams, then retain the output-side codec, bitrate, GOP, audio, and destination settings that fit those streams.

Preflight test
- Start the stream from FFmpeg using a private or otherwise appropriate YouTube test setup.
- Use sample content with motion and audio representative of the actual broadcast. YouTube specifically advises testing before going live.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room’s stream health and messages, and confirm the expected resolution, frame rate, and audio are arriving.
- Watch for encoder lag or dropped frames on the sending computer and instability in the upload connection. Reduce resolution or frame rate if the system or connection cannot sustain the chosen settings.
Common failures and fixes
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder or option | The installed build lacks that encoder, or the option belongs to a different encoder. | Check ffmpeg -encoders and the selected encoder’s help; substitute an available H.264 encoder and its supported rate-control controls. |
| Connection fails before video reaches YouTube | Incorrect server URL or stream key, or unavailable RTMPS support in the build. | Copy the current server URL and key from YouTube Live Control Room, keep the key private, and check ffmpeg -protocols for RTMPS support. |
| YouTube reports an unsupported or unexpected stream format | Codec, container, stream mapping, or output parameters do not match the intended ingest. | Confirm H.264 video, AAC audio, the expected mapped tracks, and the RTMP-family output muxer; inspect FFmpeg’s log and YouTube’s stream-health message. |
| Stream health shows bitrate instability or dropped frames | Upload capacity, network consistency, or encoder performance may be insufficient. | Compare sustained upload capacity with total stream bitrate, reduce resolution/frame rate or bitrate as appropriate, and check whether encoding is keeping pace. |
| Keyframe interval warning | The encoder is emitting keyframes less often than intended, or the GOP count does not match the output frame rate. | Calculate the GOP from the output frame rate (for example, 60 frames at 30 fps) and verify the actual encoder’s keyframe behavior. |
| Audio is missing, wrong, or out of sync | The selected input mapping or audio track format may not match the source. | Inspect available streams with FFmpeg, adjust -map, and confirm AAC encoding and sample-rate settings for the intended channel layout. |
Keep the stream compliant with YouTube rules
Encoding settings only address whether the stream can be ingested; they do not grant rights to the content or guarantee monetization. Use video and audio you own or are licensed to broadcast, including game footage, music, and other creators’ material. Review YouTube’s current live-stream and copyright rules before an event, and avoid assuming that adding commentary or changing codecs makes reused material permissible. YouTube may interrupt or restrict a stream for policy or rights issues regardless of FFmpeg settings.
