That is a recommendation based on published specifications, not a tested 24/7 setup. If by “stream” you mean broadcasting a continuous live program to YouTube viewers, the computer’s model is only one part of the decision; local playback and a live broadcast are different workflows.
First decide what “24/7 YouTube playlist stream” means
A playlist playing locally on a Mac and a continuous live broadcast to viewers are not interchangeable. The Mac mini specifications support a reasoned choice for basic video playback, but they do not establish a complete live-broadcast workflow, required encoder settings, upload bandwidth, or uninterrupted uptime. This article therefore recommends a Mac for the local-playback interpretation and treats a continuous live broadcast as a separate architecture decision.
Apple identifies M6 and M5 Pro Mac mini models in its 2026 specifications. The M6 is the practical starting point for simple playlist playback; the M5 Pro’s extra starting memory and storage do not, on the available published specifications, establish a benefit for that workload. Apple’s specifications do not guarantee that either model will run continuously without interruption.
Mac mini models: what matters for playlist playback

Apple documents differences in display support and chip/media capabilities, but those differences do not by themselves demonstrate a practical advantage for an always-playing playlist. Compare the configurations against your actual simultaneous workloads and connection needs. Current purchase prices are not established here, so check Apple or a retailer for the configuration and price available in your region. What a local Mac setup can—and cannot—establish
For local playlist playback
The M6 has the more proportionate published configuration for straightforward playback. Its hardware video decode engine is relevant, but no cited test measures its performance playing a YouTube playlist continuously. HDMI and Ethernet are available; wired Ethernet is a reasonable option if your network supports it, not an established requirement.
Apple lists an operating-temperature range of 10°–35° C and idle sound pressure of 5 dBA at the operator position for current Mac mini specifications. These are manufacturer specifications, not a promise of endurance or continuous availability. Keep the Mac in a suitable environment and plan for the possibility of network, power, software, or service interruptions rather than treating the hardware as an uptime guarantee.

For a live broadcast to viewers
A live broadcast requires more than playing a playlist on a Mac: the stream has to be sent to YouTube through a broadcast workflow. The available product specifications do not settle which encoder or YouTube configuration to use, what upload capacity is needed, or whether a local Mac is the right architecture. Do not treat the M6 recommendation as proof that it will run a particular live-broadcast setup; establish those requirements before buying hardware for that purpose.
Power figures are not 24/7 playback measurements
Apple’s published power figures in the cited support table concern specified 2024 systems, not the M6 and not YouTube playback. Apple reports wall measurements that include power-supply and system losses:

Neither row is an M6 reading or a measured video-playback draw. Multiplying one of these figures by a year would not establish the actual electricity cost of an M6 playlist setup; actual playback consumption and local electricity rates are not provided. ENERGY STAR’s record for the M4 A3238 configuration lists 2.4 W long idle, 2.8 W short idle, 0.6 W sleep, and 0.1 W off. How to choose
- Choose the M6 Mac mini if you want a local computer for straightforward playlist playback and value the base configuration’s hardware video decode engine, HDMI, and Ethernet. Treat 24/7 suitability as untested, not guaranteed.
- Consider M5 Pro when its additional starting memory, storage, Thunderbolt 5, or capabilities matter to work beyond simple playback. The published specs alone do not justify it solely for a playlist.
- Consider a cloud service instead of an always-on home computer if your actual goal is a YouTube live stream from uploaded videos and you do not want the computer or home connection to remain on.
