How to Stream a Continuous YouTube Playlist with FFmpeg on a DigitalOcean VPS

A practical guide to looping compatible media through FFmpeg on a DigitalOcean VPS and into a properly configured YouTube Live broadcast.

You can run a continuous YouTube Live playlist from a DigitalOcean VPS by preparing compatible media, sending FFmpeg’s output to YouTube’s ingest service, and supervising FFmpeg so it can restart after a process failure or server reboot. You must also create and start the YouTube broadcast: an incoming FFmpeg feed and the viewer-facing broadcast are separate parts of the setup.

The exact FFmpeg command depends on your playlist format, media compatibility, FFmpeg build, and chosen ingest protocol. The workflow below shows how to make those decisions safely without presenting an untested command as universal.

How the VPS-to-YouTube setup works

There are three moving parts: your media and playlist, an FFmpeg process on the Droplet, and a YouTube Live broadcast connected to the incoming stream. YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes a liveStream (the incoming audio/video feed and its delivery settings) from a liveBroadcast (the watchable event). You can reuse a stream across broadcasts; YouTube describes, for example, a 24/7 feed with a separate interview broadcast bound to the same stream. See Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.

Provisioning a Droplet does not create or start a YouTube broadcast. Before going live, confirm YouTube Live is available for your channel, create or select the broadcast and stream in YouTube’s live control interface, and obtain the current ingest details there. Keep the stream key secret: it identifies your stream and should not appear in public examples, screenshots, source control, or exposed logs.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Prepare and validate the playlist

Do not assume that any M3U playlist or arbitrary set of videos will concatenate cleanly. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer can join compatible inputs without re-encoding; when files differ and need normalization, FFmpeg’s concat filter is the appropriate route if you are willing to re-encode. The concat protocol is a separate file-level method and only works with formats that support that kind of concatenation. Consult the FFmpeg FAQ and test representative transitions before using a long playlist.

Check each file before building the stream

  • Check video and audio codecs, dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, and whether every item has audio.
  • Look for mismatched timestamps or files whose audio ends before the video.
  • Choose the playlist syntax and FFmpeg input method deliberately; a command for a concat-demuxer list is not a generic M3U player command.
  • If the files have incompatible media parameters, normalize or re-encode them to a stable output profile, then check transitions and audio synchronization.

Validate a short sample containing several transitions before leaving the feed unattended. The supplied documentation does not establish one tested command line for every FFmpeg distribution, playlist type, media set, and YouTube ingest path, so construct and verify the output for your actual setup.

Choose and configure the YouTube ingest method

Use the ingest protocol supported by your current YouTube live setup and by the FFmpeg build and output muxer you intend to use. YouTube’s encoder guidance and live control room should be the authority for current settings; after connecting, verify stream health there rather than assuming that a running FFmpeg process means the broadcast is healthy.

RTMP/RTMPS versus HLS

HLS is not simply an RTMP command with a different URL. It is a segment-based upload protocol with a specific playlist and upload contract. YouTube documents HLS delivery as HTTPS uploads using HTTP PUT or POST, with a media playlist (not a master playlist), one encoded stream with muxed audio and video, and supported codecs of H.264 or HEVC video plus a single AAC audio track. HLS also requires closed GOPs; it supports up to 60 fps, and each segment must be no longer than five seconds. YouTube recommends segment durations of one to four seconds. Shorter segments can reduce latency but may increase rebuffering and reduce encoding efficiency; HLS ingestion generally has higher latency than RTMP/WebRTC. See YouTube HLS ingestion.

Those HLS conditions apply to HLS ingestion, not automatically to an RTMP/RTMPS output. If using HLS, implement the documented playlist and segment behavior, including a sequence starting at zero and increasing monotonically, updating the playlist for every segment, and keeping no more than five outstanding segments. For other ingest methods, follow the relevant current YouTube encoder guidance instead of copying HLS options into an unrelated output command.

Run FFmpeg continuously on the Droplet

Run FFmpeg under a service manager or another process supervisor rather than relying on an SSH session. Configure it to start after a reboot and restart if the process exits, then check both FFmpeg’s logs and YouTube’s stream health. A supervisor can relaunch an exited encoder, but it cannot repair invalid media, a revoked stream key, an unavailable ingest endpoint, or a broadcast that needs attention in YouTube.

Protect the stream key

  • Do not put a real key in a tutorial command, a checked-in service unit, a public repository, or a screenshot.
  • Use a protected configuration or secret-injection method appropriate to the Droplet, and restrict access to it.
  • Be mindful that process arguments, shell history, and logs may expose secrets depending on how you launch FFmpeg. Review your method before deployment.

Monitor the output, not just the process

Watch FFmpeg logs for input, timestamp, and output errors, and check YouTube’s stream-health status after connecting. YouTube’s health messages identify problems such as low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, GOP/keyframe mismatch, and keyframes sent too infrequently. Its documented health guidance says keyframes should be no more than four seconds apart. A stable profile, transition testing, and an operator plan for alerts and recovery matter more than assuming a 24/7 feed will need no maintenance.

Size the DigitalOcean Droplet for the real workload

A Droplet is a Linux virtual machine. Pick its resources based on whether FFmpeg only relays already-encoded media or must transcode it. A relay and a real-time re-encode have different CPU demands; if you re-encode, test sustained real-time performance with your actual codec and output settings before relying on that server.

DigitalOcean’s Droplet limits page, last verified in 2026, states maximum network throughput of 2 Gbps for non-GPU, non-premium-CPU Droplets and 10 Gbps for premium CPU Droplets. These are network ceilings, not guidance that a particular plan can encode your video or has enough included transfer. The same page says outbound traffic counts against the monthly transfer allowance. Check the current plan allowance and network limits for the Droplet you choose; this guide does not establish current plan prices or allowances.

Estimate continuous outbound transfer

Use your actual encoded bitrate and intended runtime rather than inferring bandwidth from resolution. As a first-order estimate, multiply bitrate by continuous hours, convert bits to bytes, then allow extra for protocol and container overhead and a safety margin. Compare the result with the plan’s current monthly transfer allowance. Revisit the estimate if you change bitrate, add outputs, or re-encode at a different profile.

Troubleshooting a continuous feed

Symptom Likely area to check What to do
FFmpeg starts, but YouTube does not show an active broadcast The feed and broadcast are separate; the broadcast may not be created, bound to the stream, or started. Check the live control interface and confirm the broadcast is associated with the stream receiving FFmpeg’s output.
FFmpeg exits or reports input/output errors Playlist paths, file compatibility, permissions, media timestamps, or ingest connectivity. Inspect the error in FFmpeg logs, validate the affected file and transition, and verify the ingest details. A supervisor can restart the process after an exit but will not resolve the underlying fault.
YouTube reports low bitrate or frame-rate problems The actual encoder output may not match the selected stream settings or may be unstable. Compare YouTube’s health message with the configured output and current encoder guidance; verify the real output rather than relying on the input file’s nominal properties.
YouTube reports GOP or keyframe issues Keyframe interval or GOP structure does not meet the relevant ingest guidance. Adjust the encoder profile for the chosen ingest method. YouTube’s documented health guidance calls for keyframes no more than four seconds apart.
The stream stops after a reboot or SSH disconnect FFmpeg was attached to the interactive session or is not enabled as a supervised service. Configure a service manager or process supervisor to start after reboot and restart after process exit; verify its status and logs.
The Droplet approaches its transfer allowance or cannot encode in real time Continuous egress, re-encoding load, or resource sizing is insufficient for the actual media profile. Measure the encoded bitrate and runtime, compare projected egress against the current allowance, and test CPU performance with the exact transcode settings.
