If your YouTube playlist videos have already been downloaded to your computer, the fix depends on how you give their filenames to FFmpeg. For a concat-demuxer playlist, quote or escape each path inside the text file; quoting only the command line is not enough. If FFmpeg then reports an unsafe path, add -safe 0 for a list you trust. For a single input file, quote the path as one argument in your shell.
First identify which kind of playlist you mean
FFmpeg handles local video filenames differently from a YouTube playlist URL. This guide covers local files downloaded from a playlist and then passed to FFmpeg. A YouTube URL or playlist URL is a separate workflow: yt-dlp is the downloader covered by the cited documentation, and the available sources do not establish that FFmpeg itself supports every YouTube URL or playlist form.
There are three places spaces may need attention: the filename created by the downloader, the shell command, and—if you use it—the FFmpeg concat-list text file. Fix the layer where FFmpeg is actually receiving the filename.
For a concat playlist, quote filenames inside the list
If you are joining several local files through FFmpeg’s concat demuxer, create a text file such as files.txt with one entry per video. Enclose each path in single quotes or escape spaces with backslashes, using FFmpeg concat-list syntax:

ffconcat version 1.0

file 'video two.mp4'The opening ffconcat version 1.0 line is optional in some workflows, but when used it must be the first line. FFmpeg’s documentation says spaces and special characters in a concat entry must be escaped with backslashes or enclosed in single quotes: FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
For a list you created and trust, use this command if FFmpeg rejects the paths under its default safe-path check:

ffmpeg -f concat -safe 0 -i files.txt -c copy output.mp4-safe 0 relaxes the concat demuxer’s path validation. It is not a general fix for every filename error, and you should not use it blindly with a list file from an untrusted source. The command is a pattern, not a guarantee that arbitrary videos will concatenate successfully.
For one video, quote the command-line argument
If you are reading just one downloaded file, concat-list rules do not apply. Quote the entire path after -i so your shell passes it as one argument. For example, in a POSIX-style shell:

ffmpeg -i "video one.mp4" output.mp4Quoting differs among Bash, PowerShell, Windows Command Prompt, and other shells, so adapt the spelling to the shell you are using. FFmpeg also notes that its own escaping may require an additional layer when a command is embedded in a shell or script: FFmpeg quoting and escaping documentation.
Diagnose the error at the parsing layer
- The displayed path stops at the first space, or FFmpeg says it cannot open a truncated filename: the shell argument or concat-list entry is not quoted correctly. Fix the relevant layer; adding
-safe 0will not repair malformed quoting. - The error specifically says the concat path or filename is unsafe: if the list is yours and trusted, retry with
-safe 0as shown above. The concat demuxer defaults to a restrictive safe-path policy that excludes spaces. - You are passing a YouTube playlist URL: download the videos first with a downloader such as yt-dlp, then supply the resulting local paths to FFmpeg. The exact URL and playlist support depends on the downloader workflow and is not covered by concat-list quoting.
- You changed a filename template but FFmpeg still fails: confirm whether the filename appears in a direct
-iargument or in the concat text file. The template controls the name created by the downloader, not how FFmpeg parses that name later.
Check media compatibility after the paths work
Getting FFmpeg to open each path does not ensure that it can join the videos with -c copy. The concat demuxer joins packet streams; the files need matching streams, codecs, and time bases. It adjusts timestamps between files, and inaccurate duration information can cause artifacts. See the concat demuxer requirements.

If stream-copy concatenation fails or produces unwanted results, inspect the files’ stream properties before choosing another workflow. When their formats differ, concatenating through a filter and re-encoding may be more suitable, but it requires an appropriate filter command for the actual inputs; there is no universal command to substitute without knowing those media details.

If you prefer filenames without spaces or other special characters, yt-dlp provides --restrict-filenames. It is an optional naming preference, not a requirement for FFmpeg to read ordinary filenames with spaces. See the yt-dlp filesystem options.
