Find the first place the picture stops moving: the source file, FFmpeg’s local output, or YouTube’s Live Control Room preview. That tells you whether to investigate the media and encoding chain, the outgoing connection, or YouTube ingestion settings. A process that is still running—and a growing archive file—does not prove that new video frames are reaching viewers.
Find where the picture freezes
Compare the same moment in three places: the original file, any local FFmpeg output or archive, and YouTube’s Live Control Room preview or player. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends checking the encoder output, encoder errors and CPU load, and the local archive. If the local output is healthy but YouTube’s result is not, investigate the outbound connection and YouTube ingestion path. If the local output is frozen too, start with the source, FFmpeg processing chain and machine load. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide
- Source file is frozen: inspect the file itself and try another player or seek to the affected section.
- Source moves, local FFmpeg output freezes: inspect FFmpeg’s decode, filters, encoding speed and logs.
- Local output moves, YouTube preview freezes: check the upload connection, stream health and ingestion errors.
- The freeze repeats at the same loop boundary: focus on the file, timestamps and loop transition.
- The freeze is intermittent and coincides with write or connection errors: investigate network stability and output recovery.
YouTube also advises monitoring audio and video quality and checking the local archive. A file that continues to grow may still contain repeated or frozen frames, so inspect its images and the FFmpeg log rather than relying on file size alone. YouTube’s live-stream tips
Check the FFmpeg loop and real-time pacing
For a file input, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 option requests infinite looping. It is an input option, so put it before the matching -i. The -re option reads at the input’s native rate and is useful when sending a file as a live stream. FFmpeg documentation

'rtmp://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
This is an illustrative command pattern, not a tested, complete production configuration. Replace the endpoint and key with the values shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Adapt stream mapping, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and audio options to your source and chosen stream settings. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it in commands, logs, screenshots or support requests.
If the freeze occurs at the loop boundary
Look in the FFmpeg log for demuxing or decoding errors, timestamp discontinuities, filter failures, encoder stalls and output errors. Check whether the source file is damaged or has stream properties that cause trouble when looped. The documented loop option establishes how to request repetition; it does not diagnose a particular file or guarantee a seamless transition. Re-encoding may be appropriate if the source’s timestamps or stream properties are unsuitable, but verify the actual file and installed FFmpeg build before changing the pipeline.

Validate YouTube’s incoming video settings
In Live Control Room, review stream-health messages and compare the incoming stream against the settings selected for the broadcast. YouTube’s guidance covers codecs, progressive video, frame rate, resolution and keyframe frequency. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. At 30 fps, two seconds corresponds to 60 frames; at another frame rate, calculate the interval in seconds rather than copying the same frame count. YouTube also recommends constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. Live-stream troubleshooting · YouTube encoder settings
A frozen picture by itself does not establish that the keyframe interval is wrong. Use dashboard warnings and the actual FFmpeg output settings to identify a mismatch before altering the GOP or other encoding parameters.

Separate CPU and network problems
When encoding falls behind
Check FFmpeg’s reported processing speed and errors, along with CPU load. If local output freezes or processing cannot keep pace, reduce unnecessary filters or encoding workload, inspect the source and test with another encoder if the local output remains faulty. YouTube’s troubleshooting flow specifically points to encoder errors and CPU load when diagnosing local output issues. YouTube troubleshooting steps
When the local output is good but the stream is not
Check upload bandwidth and stability for the configured stream, not just download speed. Look for FFmpeg write failures, dropped connections and YouTube stream-health warnings. If a connection test indicates a problem, YouTube advises contacting the internet provider. Persistent instability needs a network fix; reconnecting cannot compensate for insufficient or unreliable upload capacity.

Use output recovery only for temporary interruptions
FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer has optional output-recovery behavior, including attempt_recovery; its documentation includes an RTMP retry example. This can help with temporary network failures when configured and validated for the installed FFmpeg build. It does not make a stalled source advance, repair corrupt media or correct invalid YouTube settings. FFmpeg FIFO muxer documentation
Verify the endpoint and stream key if the connection is rejected
A wrong endpoint or key more commonly prevents a stream from connecting than causes a picture to freeze after valid ingestion. If FFmpeg reports connection or authorization errors, copy the current stream URL and key from Live Control Room into the encoder configuration and confirm that the correct stream is selected.
