You add chapters to a YouTube lecture archive by editing the video description in YouTube Studio and entering timestamp-and-title lines. Start at 00:00, list at least three timestamps in ascending order, and make each chapter at least 10 seconds long. First confirm YouTube created an archive you can edit: a continuous stream running longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all.
Check that YouTube created an editable archive
Chapter markers in a description apply to a video, so first open YouTube Studio and confirm the stream appears as an archived video that you can edit. Do not assume that a continuous 24/7 broadcast will produce one complete, editable archive. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but “If your live stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” The page does not state a publication year.
For a nonstop lecture channel, plan how to capture and divide recordings rather than relying on YouTube’s archive alone. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive as a backup. Its live-stream tips also advise checking that the local recording file is growing and monitoring audio and video during the event. Verify the backup while the stream is running, not only after it ends.
Add manual chapters in the video description
- In YouTube Studio, open the archived lecture video and go to its details. Confirm the description is editable.
- In the description, add one line per chapter with a timestamp followed by a short, descriptive topic title. Use
00:00for the first entry, then list later timestamps in chronological order. For example:00:00 Introduction and course outline

28:15 Worked example - Check that there are at least three timestamps and that every chapter is at least 10 seconds long. A timestamp marks the start of a chapter; the next timestamp sets the previous chapter’s end.
- Save the video, then open the public video page and check that the chapter divisions appear on the playback timeline. If the archive does not expose editable details or the chapters do not appear, do not assume the stream markers or transcript will create them automatically.
YouTube’s stated manual chapter requirements are a first timestamp at 00:00, at least three timestamps in ascending order, and a minimum duration of 10 seconds for each chapter. Manually supplied chapters override automatic chapters.

Manual chapters or automatic chapters?

You can allow automatic chapters in Studio, but use manual timestamps when you need control over where lecture topics begin and what they are called. YouTube says chapters may appear in transcripts; that does not mean a transcript creates chapter timestamps. A transcript can help you locate topic boundaries, but the documented manual method is still to enter timestamps and titles in the description.
Use live markers as locating aids, not as chapter entries
YouTube lets a creator insert markers during a live stream. Its instructions describe using those markers on the timeline while creating a highlight in YouTube Editor. They can help you find lecture moments later, but the instructions do not say that markers automatically become description chapters. Add the timestamp lines to the archived video description if you want manual chapters.

Plan recordings for a continuous 24/7 channel
- Do not depend on a single archive covering an uninterrupted day. YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. Its documentation does not guarantee that every 24/7 stream will be archived or that every long archive has the same chapter-editing controls as an ordinary video.
- Keep and check a local recording. YouTube recommends a local archive backup; its live-stream guidance says to verify the file is growing and monitor the stream’s audio and video.
- Verify each segment after the broadcast. Check that the archive exists and is editable before spending time preparing chapters. If one continuous archive is unavailable, use the recordings you actually have and add chapters to editable video archives.
- Keep timestamps tied to the video being edited. For each separate archive, use timestamps relative to that video’s start, beginning at
00:00.
Troubleshoot chapters that do not appear
- No archive is listed: Description chapters cannot recover a recording that YouTube did not capture. The stream may have exceeded 12 hours; check any local recording or planned segments.
- Chapter markers are missing from the timeline: Recheck that the first entry is
00:00, there are at least three timestamps, they ascend, and every chapter lasts at least 10 seconds. Save the description and check the video again. - You expected automatic chapters: Eligibility and availability are not guaranteed. Check the video’s chapter settings and use manual description entries for creator-defined chapters.
- A live marker or transcript did not create chapters: These are not substitutes for the documented manual description method. Use them to find topic times, then enter those times and titles in the description.
- The archive exists but editing is unclear: YouTube’s general chapter guidance documents editing video descriptions, but does not expressly settle how every 24/7 archive—especially an archive from a stream longer than 12 hours—will behave. Confirm the specific archive’s available controls before relying on it.
