How to Transfer Video Files from an Indian PC to a VPS for FFmpeg YouTube Streaming

A practical guide to transferring a video from a Windows PC to a Linux VPS, choosing SFTP, SCP, rsync or cloud storage, and preparing an FFmpeg YouTube stream.

For a Windows PC in India and a Linux VPS, the simplest graphical route is usually SFTP with WinSCP or FileZilla: connect using the VPS host, username, SSH key and port, then upload the video to a directory the account running FFmpeg can read. For a one-off copy, use SCP; for repeated transfers, consider rsync over SSH. Once the file is on the VPS, FFmpeg can pace it in real time and send it to YouTube using the RTMPS server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room.

Choose how to transfer the video

All four methods below move a file from your PC to the VPS; they differ in setup, repeatability and whether they require a direct SSH connection. Google Cloud and DigitalOcean document these as common VM transfer approaches, but provider controls and exact client commands can vary.

Situation Route What to consider
You want drag-and-drop file browsing SFTP with WinSCP or FileZilla Requires SSH access, the server host and username, and a key or other authentication. The graphical client shows local and remote files.
You are copying one file from a terminal SCP over SSH Direct copy, but you must use the correct username, key, port and remote path.
You will synchronize files more than once rsync over SSH Useful for repeated directory synchronization. Check that rsync is available and confirm flags for your local client and server.
Direct SSH is unavailable or a relay is easier Cloud-storage bucket Adds an upload and a VPS download, plus temporary storage permissions and possible storage costs.

For an Indian connection, don’t assume a particular VPS region or ISP route will be fastest. Test your actual PC-to-VPS transfer rate and compare it with the file size and time available. This transfer is separate from the VPS-to-YouTube stream: your home connection carries the file to the server, while the VPS’s outbound connection carries the live stream to YouTube.

Before uploading: confirm SSH access and destination

Gather the connection details

  • The VPS hostname or IP address.
  • The Linux account username permitted to connect.
  • The SSH port. Port 22 is a common default, but providers or administrators can change it.
  • The SSH private key or other credentials required by your provider.
  • A remote directory with enough free disk space that the FFmpeg process can read the uploaded file.

Check the VPS firewall or security rules as well as any firewall on the server: they must permit inbound SSH on the configured port. Prefer SSH-key authentication where your provider supports it. DigitalOcean’s transfer guide describes SFTP with FileZilla and recommends SSH keys; Google Cloud documents file transfer over SSH. See DigitalOcean’s file-transfer guide and Google Cloud’s transfer documentation.

Upload from Windows with SFTP

WinSCP or FileZilla

  1. Install WinSCP or FileZilla on the Windows PC.
  2. Create a new SFTP connection. Enter the VPS hostname or IP, username and SSH port. Select the SSH private key or other authentication method supplied for the account.
  3. Connect and verify the server identity when prompted. If the fingerprint differs unexpectedly from one you have previously verified, stop and check with the VPS provider or administrator before proceeding.
  4. In the remote file pane, open the destination directory. Confirm it has space for the video and is accessible to the account that will run FFmpeg.
  5. Drag the video from the local pane to the remote pane, or use the client’s upload action. Keep the client open until it reports the transfer has completed.
  6. Check that the uploaded file appears at the intended remote path and that its size looks plausible. If you have a way to compare checksums, use it to check integrity before streaming.

For a Windows-to-Linux graphical workflow, DigitalOcean specifically documents SFTP with FileZilla. The exact menus for setting a private-key file differ between clients and versions; follow the installed client’s current connection settings rather than assuming a particular screen label. DigitalOcean SFTP instructions.

Use SCP for a one-off copy, or rsync for repeats

SCP and rsync both transfer over SSH. The correct command depends on the local shell, installed client, VPS username, key-file location, SSH port and destination path. Do not copy a command until every value matches your setup; the VPS documentation lists these as alternatives, but does not establish one universal command syntax for every Windows environment.

  • SCP: choose it when you need a straightforward one-time copy and can supply the correct local file and remote destination.
  • rsync: consider it when you will synchronize changing files or directories repeatedly. Confirm client availability and options for your environment before running it.

Google Cloud documents gcloud compute scp over SSH for its instances. DigitalOcean lists rsync, OpenSSH SFTP and SCP as command-line options. Those provider-specific examples do not mean their exact syntax or tooling applies unchanged to another VPS. Google Cloud transfer documentation; DigitalOcean transfer documentation.

Use a cloud-storage bucket as a relay

If your PC cannot connect to the VPS over SSH, or a storage bucket fits your workflow better, upload the video from the PC to a bucket and download it onto the VPS. This creates two transfer legs and a temporary stored copy, so allow for both the time and any applicable storage charges.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For Google Cloud’s documented workflow, the identity uploading an object needs the Storage Object Admin role and the identity downloading it needs Storage Object Viewer. Roles and permissions differ across cloud providers. After the VPS has the file, delete the temporary object when it is no longer needed to avoid unwanted storage charges. Google Cloud’s transfer guide.

Check the file and VPS before starting FFmpeg

  • Confirm the remote path and filename, including capitalization and extension.
  • Make sure the Linux account that launches FFmpeg can read the file. A successful upload does not guarantee another account or service can access that directory.
  • Check available disk space. A partially uploaded or truncated file can fail during playback even if it appears in the directory listing.
  • Measure the PC-to-VPS transfer speed if timing matters. File size divided by the measured rate gives a rough transfer-time estimate; the connection can vary, so leave a margin.
  • Check that FFmpeg is installed and note its version and build. FFmpeg’s online documentation may describe options newer than the build installed on your VPS.

Configure YouTube ingest and FFmpeg

Get the current RTMPS URL and stream key

Open YouTube Live Control Room for the stream you intend to use and copy its current server URL and stream key. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. The URL and key can depend on the stream configuration, so use the values YouTube provides rather than a remembered example. Treat the key like a password: someone who obtains it may be able to publish to the stream. Do not put a real key in a public script, example, screenshot or log. YouTube’s RTMPS setup instructions.

Match codec, bitrate and keyframes to the video

YouTube’s RTMP/RTMPS encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate encoding; a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds; and AAC or MP3 audio. Use bitrate figures for the codec, resolution and frame rate you actually send. The following examples are YouTube’s published H.264 figures, not independent measurements:

H.264 video mode YouTube-listed minimum YouTube-listed recommended bitrate
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p at 60 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p at 60 fps 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These numbers apply to the listed H.264 modes only; consult YouTube’s current table for other codecs, resolutions or frame rates. Its guidance also recommends keeping total stream bitrate below available outbound bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. That outbound capacity is the VPS’s, not the Indian PC’s upload speed. Understand the FFmpeg command shape

FFmpeg takes input with -i and writes to an output URL. When sending a file to an RTMP-family output, FFmpeg documents -re for reading the file at real-time pace instead of processing it as fast as possible. The exact command depends on the file’s codecs, whether you need to transcode, your FFmpeg build, YouTube’s current URL and key, and the output settings you select. Avoid treating an unverified one-size-fits-all command as safe to paste into production. FFmpeg command-line documentation; FFmpeg protocol documentation.

If you build a command or script, keep the stream key out of shared files and logs. Restrict access to any configuration file that contains it, and replace the key in YouTube if you believe it has been exposed.

Test the stream before relying on it

  1. Start with a private or unlisted test stream, as appropriate for your channel and workflow.
  2. Start FFmpeg on the VPS using the uploaded file and YouTube-provided RTMPS details.
  3. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health indicators. Confirm video and audio are present, motion and sound stay in sync, and the broadcast does not repeatedly disconnect.
  4. Let the test run long enough to catch problems that appear after startup, then check that the final video plays as expected.
  5. If you change the bitrate, resolution, codec or keyframe interval, test again and monitor stream health rather than assuming the change improved stability.

YouTube recommends testing and monitoring stream health. YouTube streaming tips.

Troubleshoot common transfer and streaming failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
SFTP, SCP or SSH connection times out Wrong host or port, SSH blocked by firewall/security rules, or the server is not reachable from the PC. Verify the host and configured SSH port with the provider, then check both provider-level rules and the server firewall. Do not assume port 22 if the VPS uses another port.
Authentication fails Wrong username, wrong key, or the client is not using the expected authentication method. Confirm the Linux account and key with the VPS setup details. In a GUI client, check that the private key is selected for the SFTP site.
Upload finishes, but FFmpeg reports the file is missing or unreadable Wrong remote path, filename case mismatch, directory permissions, or FFmpeg running as a different account. Check the exact path and filename, then confirm the FFmpeg process’s account can read the file and its parent directories.
Transfer is slower than expected or stalls PC-to-VPS route, local upload capacity, server limits or an unstable connection. Measure actual PC-to-VPS throughput and compare it with the remaining file size. Try again over a stable connection or use a bucket relay if direct SSH is impractical; no route or Indian ISP speed is established as universally fastest.
YouTube shows no incoming video Wrong server URL or key, an incorrect output configuration, or FFmpeg cannot read the input. Use the current RTMPS URL and key from Live Control Room, check FFmpeg’s input and output errors, and keep the key private.
Stream drops or reports unstable health VPS outbound bandwidth is too close to the stream bitrate, or the route/server has interruptions. Compare the total stream bitrate with measured available VPS outbound capacity, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and monitor stream health during a test.
Video or audio playback is wrong Input codec, output settings or file content does not match the intended stream. Check the actual media file and FFmpeg output configuration, then run another private/unlisted test and inspect the preview and resulting playback.

Account for two separate network legs

The PC’s upload connection determines how quickly the recording reaches the VPS. Once uploaded, the VPS’s outbound connection determines whether it can deliver the chosen stream bitrate to YouTube with adequate margin. Improving one leg does not automatically improve the other. If you need the stream to run continuously, also plan how FFmpeg will be started and monitored on the VPS; file transfer alone does not keep a process running.
