The encoder can run on a computer, on dedicated hardware, or in the cloud. Set up and test the channel before launch: YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, and a 24-hour stream should not be treated as one dependable replay file.
What you need before you start
- A verified YouTube channel with live streaming enabled and no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until launch day. YouTube’s live-streaming requirements explain channel eligibility and restrictions.
- An encoder that can send your prerecorded lessons as a continuous audio-and-video feed. It may be software on a computer, dedicated hardware, or a cloud service.
- Lesson files and any supporting material that you have permission to stream, plus a stable internet connection for a computer-based setup.
- A plan for what viewers see between lessons, who checks stream health, and how students can find lessons on demand.
Choose how to keep the feed running
YouTube describes software and hardware encoder options and lists OBS as open-source software available at no charge. Its encoder guidance also lists Gyre for cloud-based 24/7 prerecorded-video streams and AJA HELO Plus hardware with scheduled prerecorded-media streaming. These are listed options, not guarantees of uninterrupted service or endorsements. Compare the workflow and current terms before choosing.

Prepare and organize the recorded lessons
Check content rights
Review every lesson and embedded element before scheduling it: instructor recordings, slides, textbook excerpts, music, images and third-party materials may have separate rights. An educational purpose does not by itself establish permission to stream material. YouTube says live content must follow its Community Guidelines and Terms of Service and may be age-restricted, removed or subject to live-stream access restrictions. Make the sequence useful to students
- Arrange lessons in a deliberate order, such as by subject, exam unit or revision difficulty.
- Give each lesson a clear title or on-screen label so a student joining midstream can identify what is playing.
- Decide whether the sequence repeats immediately, includes a break, or shows a holding screen between lessons.
- Keep original lesson files. If students need searchable, on-demand access, upload ordinary videos and organize them into playlists as well as running the live channel.
Set up the YouTube live stream
- Confirm eligibility and activation. Verify the channel and confirm that live streaming is available and unrestricted. If the channel has never streamed before, allow up to 24 hours for activation, as described by YouTube.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. In YouTube Studio, open Go Live and create a new stream or schedule one. YouTube’s encoder workflow uses a live broadcast in Live Control Room alongside the encoder feed; confirm that you are working with the intended broadcast before going live.
- Copy the connection details. In the stream setup, find the YouTube server URL and stream key. Keep the key private: it acts as a credential for sending video to your channel. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Configure your encoder. In its streaming settings, select the service or destination for YouTube, then enter the server URL and stream key. Load or schedule the recorded lessons in the encoder’s playlist or media workflow. Exact controls depend on the encoder you chose; use its current instructions for playlist, looping and reconnect settings.
- Start the encoder and check Live Control Room. Start the outgoing feed, then verify that YouTube receives it and that the correct broadcast is live. Do not assume that starting playback locally also makes the YouTube broadcast public.
YouTube’s documentation supports configuring the encoder with a server URL and stream key, then starting the encoder and taking the stream live in Live Control Room. Encoder-specific controls differ, so do not copy settings from another product without checking its documentation.
Rehearse before making the channel public
Use a private or unlisted test where appropriate. Check the actual YouTube output, not only the encoder preview.

- Listen for clear speech, balanced music and unexpected silence; check video framing and legibility of slides.
- Confirm the lesson order and that playback continues at the end of a file or playlist.
- Watch what appears between lessons and at a loop boundary.
- Check stream health in Live Control Room and verify that the intended broadcast—not a test or older event—is live.
- Test what happens after a network interruption or encoder restart. Recovery behavior depends on the chosen setup; YouTube’s encoder listing does not guarantee that a particular encoder or service will recover automatically.
- Decide who will monitor the feed and any enabled chat, and document a restart procedure.
A channel intended to run 24/7 is not thereby guaranteed to stay online without interruption. Plan for monitoring and recovery rather than promising uninterrupted availability.
Keep a continuous channel separate from individual live events
YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes a liveStream, the incoming media feed and its settings, from a liveBroadcast, a distinct YouTube video event. Google’s documentation describes a channel with a 24/7 feed that creates a separate interview broadcast using the same stream; the continuous feed can remain live after the additional broadcast ends. That model can also suit a revision channel that wants a separate Q&A event without ending its lesson feed. Plan replay access and monetization carefully
Do not rely on one 24-hour replay
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That condition is not a promise that one 24-hour event will become a single complete replay. Preserve the original files and publish ordinary recordings or playlists for dependable on-demand revision access. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Do not assume the stream will earn ad revenue
YouTube’s encoder guidance says channels in the YouTube Partner Program can monetize a live stream, but monetization depends on channel eligibility and settings. Ad delivery is not guaranteed. Check YouTube’s current direct monetization guidance and your Studio settings before making financial plans; a continuous feed is not a promise of income or of any particular public-watch-time treatment.
