First verify that the channel is eligible, use recordings you have rights to stream and archive, and test the computer and internet connection under real conditions. A spare PC can encode the stream; it does not guarantee uninterrupted service.
Before you start: check YouTube eligibility and rights
Confirm the channel can livestream
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. The person streaming must be at least 16. Check eligibility before spending time configuring OBS. YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.
Use audio and visuals you are allowed to broadcast
Use a recording you made yourself or obtain written permission that explicitly covers continuous livestreaming, the relevant territory, monetization if you intend to monetize, and archived replays. A natural sound recording may have rights separate from the underlying sound of nature. Finding a file online or crediting its creator does not grant permission.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content and may warn, interrupt, or terminate a stream. A license may not be enough on its own if the rights holder uses Content ID: ask whether the channel needs to be allowlisted. Keep the written license and any allowlisting confirmation. India’s Copyright Rules contain a statutory licensing procedure for specified broadcasting of published literary or musical works and sound recordings, including notice and royalty requirements. That narrow procedure is not blanket permission to rebroadcast any recording, and whether it applies to a particular YouTube ambience channel depends on the circumstances. What you need for an OBS waterfall livestream
- A spare PC that can stay powered on and encode your chosen video and audio.
- A stable internet connection with enough sustained upload capacity for the selected bitrate.
- OBS Studio and a local waterfall video or still image, plus an audio recording you have permission to use.
- VLC installed if you plan to loop a playlist through OBS’s VLC Video source.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream and its encoder stream settings.
No particular PC specifications, operating system, connection speed, recording or license are established here. Test your own setup rather than assuming an older computer or a nominal internet-plan speed will sustain a stream.

Set up the 24/7 stream in OBS and YouTube Studio
- Prepare the channel. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a livestream using an encoder. Open the stream settings and have them ready when connecting OBS. Use RTMPS where supported; YouTube describes it as a secure version of RTMP. YouTube Help: Go live with an encoder.
- Build the waterfall scene in OBS. Add the visual as an Image source for a still or a Media Source for a video. Add the local audio recording as a media source. For a single file, open its source properties and enable Loop. For a playlist, add a VLC Video source, select the files, and enable Loop Playlist; VLC must be installed for this source to work. - Connect OBS to the YouTube encoder stream. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and connect using the stream settings from YouTube Studio. If entering a stream key manually, copy it from the intended YouTube stream into OBS; treat it like a password and do not publish or share it. Start the encoder in OBS, then confirm the stream is receiving signal in YouTube Studio before going live.
- Choose an initial output target your connection can sustain. YouTube’s current H.264 encoder guidance recommends 14 Mbps video for 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for 720p30. These are YouTube recommendations, not a measurement or guarantee of your PC or ISP. YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. Configure these in OBS’s output and video settings to match the selected resolution and frame rate. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Test the exact scene before leaving it running. Use the actual waterfall visual and audio, watch the sound levels and listen for silence or distortion, and check YouTube Studio’s stream health and messages while OBS is sending. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” If health is unstable, reduce the bitrate or output target and test again.
- Go live and confirm playback. Once YouTube Studio indicates the incoming encoder stream is ready, start the livestream there if required by the selected workflow. Open the public player and verify both picture and sound. Check again after the stream has been running long enough to reveal problems that a brief preview may miss.
Keep the stream running and plan for failures
Prevent avoidable interruptions
Set the PC not to sleep while plugged in, keep OBS running, and make sure the video and audio sources loop as intended. Monitor YouTube Studio’s stream health rather than assuming that a live status means the picture and sound are healthy. Decide who will notice and respond if the image freezes, audio stops, OBS exits, the network drops, or power fails.
Understand what a UPS can and cannot do
A suitably sized UPS may bridge a brief power interruption for the PC and router, but runtime depends on their actual load and the specific UPS. It cannot keep an internet connection available if the ISP or network equipment beyond the backup fails, and it does not guarantee 24/7 uptime. Size any UPS from measured equipment load and the runtime you need; no model or runtime is established here.

Troubleshooting common problems
