You can reduce the chance that Windows Update restarts your streaming PC during a 24/7 YouTube broadcast, but you cannot safely block updates and restarts forever. Set Windows active hours to cover your stream, use pause only as a temporary bridge, and install updates and reboot during a planned maintenance window between broadcasts.
Set Windows active hours around your broadcast
Active hours tell Windows when you normally use the PC and help it avoid automatically restarting during that period. Set them to include the entire time the stream is expected to run, not just the hours you are usually at the keyboard.
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Open Advanced options, then find Active hours. Depending on your Windows version or rollout, the active-hours or restart controls may appear directly on the Windows Update page.
- Choose the option to adjust active hours, if available, and set a start and end time that covers your broadcast schedule.
- Check Windows Update for any pending restart. If Windows offers a restart-scheduling control, choose a time in your maintenance window rather than during the stream.
Active hours reduce the likelihood of an automatic restart during the set period; they are not a guarantee that a 24/7 stream can run indefinitely without interruption. Windows version, device management policies, and staged feature availability can affect the controls you see.
Use Pause updates only as a temporary bridge
If an update is likely to interrupt a scheduled broadcast, a pause can defer updates while you prepare a maintenance window. Microsoft’s current pause guidance allows an end date up to 35 days away. At the end of the pause, Windows checks for, downloads, and installs available updates.

- Go to Settings > Windows Update.
- Select the pause control and choose an end date that comes before your planned maintenance window.
- Before that date, return to Windows Update, resume updates if necessary, install available updates, and restart the PC between broadcasts.
A pause is not a permanent shutdown of automatic updates. Microsoft says updates eventually need to be downloaded and installed, so do not rely on pausing as a long-term way to protect an always-on machine.
Plan updates and restarts between streams
The durable approach is to treat Windows maintenance as a scheduled outage. Pick a time when a brief interruption is acceptable, apply pending updates, restart, and confirm the PC and encoder are operating before the next broadcast. This is especially important for a stream that depends on a single Windows PC: a restart takes the encoder offline, and Windows settings cannot make the stream continue while that machine reboots.

- Choose a maintenance window between broadcasts, allowing time for updates and any additional restart Windows requests.
- Install pending updates from Settings > Windows Update and restart when prompted.
- After Windows returns, confirm the PC has network access and your streaming application or encoder is running with the intended stream key and settings.
- Open YouTube Live Control Room, preview or test the stream, and verify stream health before leaving the broadcast unattended.
What changed with Windows 11 restart timing in 2026
Microsoft’s August 14, 2026 article, “One restart a month for Windows updates”, describes a gradual rollout for Windows 11 versions 24H2, 25H2, and 26H1. For updates released on and after July 28, 2026, several restart-requiring categories are grouped with the monthly security update. The rollout may not have reached every device, and some updates—including Defender security intelligence, AI component, critical or expedited driver, and emergency or out-of-band updates—can install sooner. Microsoft also says a combined update will not be held indefinitely. This reduces some restart fragmentation; it does not guarantee uninterrupted streaming.
Account for Windows 10’s support status
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10 after that date. A pause setting is not a substitute for running a supported, maintained operating system on a PC connected to the internet around the clock.

Check YouTube stream health separately
Windows restart controls and YouTube broadcast health address different failure points. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance recommends choosing quality that fits the available connection, testing before going live, and monitoring stream health and messages during the event. YouTube Live Control Room provides health status and real-time metrics. These tools can help diagnose encoder or network problems; they do not control Windows Update or prevent a PC restart.
- Test the encoder and network setup before relying on the stream unattended.
- Preview the stream and check Live Control Room’s health indicators and messages.
- If you are making a local recording, check it after the event to help distinguish an encoder or connection failure from a Windows restart.

Troubleshoot an interrupted stream
Windows says a restart is required while the stream is live
Do not assume active hours or a pause has removed the restart requirement. If the stream must stay live, use any restart-scheduling control Windows offers to select a time outside the broadcast, then plan to install the update and reboot during maintenance. If the device is managed by an organization, its policy may affect which controls are available.

The PC restarted despite active hours
Check the active-hours setting and the actual Windows Update restart status, then note the Windows version and whether the device is managed. Active hours lower the chance of an automatic restart in the configured period; they do not constitute an absolute block, and some restart behavior may vary by build or rollout.
The stream is unhealthy but Windows has not restarted
Use YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health status and messages to investigate the encoder or connection. Test the setup and choose encoder quality that fits the available connection; YouTube’s monitoring tools cannot resolve an update policy issue, just as active hours cannot fix a weak stream connection.

The stream does not resume after maintenance
Confirm Windows is fully back online, then check the encoder application, network connection, and stream key configuration. Preview or test the stream in Live Control Room and review its health indicators before leaving it unattended.
