If OBS is encoding your YouTube stream, OBS must stay open and running. Minimize or hide its window if you want to clear your Mac mini’s desktop; don’t quit OBS. Closing YouTube’s compact Live Control Panel is a different action and does not, by itself, mean you quit the encoder.
Why does the stream stop when OBS closes?
OBS is the encoder in this setup: it captures or plays your video, encodes it, and sends the feed to YouTube. When you quit the app, it stops sending that feed, so YouTube can take the stream offline. YouTube’s encoder instructions put it plainly: “To end the stream, stop sending content from your encoder.” YouTube’s encoder streaming guide explains the workflow.
A YouTube stream key tells OBS where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. It is not a background service that keeps the stream going after OBS quits. YouTube’s Auto-start and Auto-stop options affect how a stream is started or stopped from the encoder; they cannot keep OBS encoding once the application is closed. See YouTube’s live stream settings.
First, identify what “closes” means
- OBS was quit: The encoder stopped sending content. Reopen OBS, start the stream again, and leave OBS running.
- OBS was minimized or hidden: The window is out of view, but OBS can continue streaming. Check its status and YouTube’s incoming feed.
- You closed YouTube’s compact Live Control Panel: That panel is separate from OBS. YouTube documents closing the compact panel by exiting its window; check whether OBS is still streaming and YouTube is receiving the feed.
- OBS disappeared unexpectedly: It may have crashed. Collect the OBS log and macOS crash report rather than assuming a particular setting caused it.
Fix it if you intentionally quit OBS
- Reopen OBS Studio on the Mac mini.
- Confirm the correct YouTube destination and stream key are selected. YouTube’s encoder setup uses a server URL and stream key to deliver the feed; follow YouTube’s encoder setup instructions if you need to verify them.
- Start streaming in OBS and confirm YouTube’s Live Control Room is receiving the feed.
- Leave OBS running. Minimize or hide its window to keep the desktop clear, but do not use Quit or Command-Q while OBS is the encoder.
If OBS is still running but YouTube shows no feed
- Check OBS’s streaming status. If OBS reports that it is disconnected or no longer streaming, inspect the current OBS log for connection details.
- Check YouTube’s Live Control Room for an incoming preview/feed and whether the event has ended. YouTube distinguishes starting and ending a stream through the encoder and Live Control Room; use its live stream settings guide to check the event state.
- If OBS remains active but cannot deliver the feed, treat it as a possible connection or YouTube event-state problem—not proof that closing OBS caused it. The log and Live Control Room status help narrow down which.
If OBS crashed or quit unexpectedly
Collect the OBS log and macOS crash report before changing settings. The available information does not establish a Mac mini-specific crash cause, so a particular encoder, network change, or resolution adjustment cannot be promised as the fix. OBS lists Intel and Apple Silicon CPUs and macOS 11 Big Sur or later among its system requirements, while cautioning that compatible hardware alone does not guarantee it can stream or record under a given workload. Check OBS’s system requirements and its version-sensitive macOS compatibility table against your installed macOS and OBS release.

Can a different encoder keep streaming without OBS?
Yes, but it must be a separate encoder that continues sending its own feed. A hardware encoder is one possible approach when the workflow must be independent of the OBS application; it is not necessary just to fix the ordinary case of OBS being quit. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events in its live streaming tips. Before choosing one, verify that the device supports your YouTube workflow, video input, resolution and frame rate, encoding format, network connection, and operation without a host computer. No particular model is established here as compatible with your setup.
