To stream a recorded lesson with subtitles on YouTube Live, add the lesson to OBS and make sure the subtitle text is visible in the outgoing video. OBS’s VLC Video source can display an enabled subtitle track. If that track does not work with your file, use a version with subtitles rendered into the picture or add a timed text overlay to the OBS scene, then rehearse with the exact file before going live. Visible subtitles are not the same as YouTube’s viewer-toggleable closed captions.
Choose the kind of captions viewers need
There are two different ways to show text with a live lesson:
- Subtitles visible in the picture: Text is part of the video viewers see, so everyone sees it and cannot turn it off. OBS can display a subtitle track through its VLC Video source. Alternatively, prepare a video with subtitles burned into the picture or create a timed text overlay in the OBS scene.
- YouTube closed captions (CC): Viewers can turn these captions on or off using YouTube’s controls. They require a separate caption-data path. YouTube says live captions must be sent to YouTube, either embedded as EIA 608/CEA 708 or through supported software that sends caption data over HTTP POST. OBS displaying a subtitle track does not, by itself, establish that this separate caption feed is active. See YouTube’s live caption requirements.
Choose the picture-subtitle route if it is acceptable for text to remain visible to all viewers. If CC controls are essential, arrange and test a supported live-caption workflow separately; YouTube’s documented embedded-caption workflow supports one caption track.
Set up subtitles in OBS
Use the VLC Video source
- Install VLC. OBS requires VLC for its VLC Video source; if you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene you will use for the lesson.
- Select the recorded lesson as the media for the source.
- Enable Subtitles Enabled and select the correct Subtitle Track.
- Preview playback and check that the subtitles appear, are readable, and stay in sync with the lesson.
OBS documents the subtitle-track controls in its Media Sources guide. The guide does not specify every subtitle-file format, so do not assume a particular file extension will work: test your actual lesson and subtitle file in the OBS build you plan to use.

If the subtitle track does not display as intended
Use a prepared copy of the lesson with subtitles rendered into the picture, or make a timed text overlay in the scene. These are alternatives to test, not guaranteed fixes: confirm the timing and appearance in the OBS preview and in a complete stream rehearsal before the event.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio or the Live Control Room, create or schedule an encoder stream. Follow YouTube’s encoder setup steps.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into OBS’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to broadcast to your stream.
- Use RTMPS when available; YouTube recommends it. Set the encoder to CBR, choose a resolution and bitrate suitable for the lesson and your upload connection, and use a 2-second keyframe interval (do not exceed 4 seconds), following YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
As a starting point, YouTube’s cited H.264 settings recommend 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 3 Mbps for 720p at 30 fps. These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of a stable stream. The appropriate settings depend on the codec, resolution, frame rate, and available upload capacity; consult the current YouTube table for your chosen output.

Rehearse before the lesson goes live
- Schedule an unlisted stream for testing if you do not want the rehearsal publicly visible.
- Start the OBS encoder and wait for the stream preview in YouTube’s Live Control Room.
- Check the viewer-facing output, including subtitle timing, legibility, and whether the intended VLC subtitle track appears. Listen for audio issues and watch for video interruptions.
- Open the watch page on a phone or another device to confirm what viewers receive. YouTube recommends testing, monitoring audio and video, and checking access from the watch page and mobile devices; see its live streaming tips.
- After the real event, end the stream in YouTube and stop the encoder.
Common problems and what to check
- No subtitles appear in OBS: Confirm VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture, then check that Subtitles Enabled is on and the intended track is selected. Test the exact file; OBS’s documentation does not establish compatibility with every subtitle format.
- Subtitles are out of sync or hard to read: Check timing and legibility in the outgoing preview, not just in a media player. If necessary, prepare a rendered-subtitle copy or adjust the scene overlay, then rehearse again.
- Viewers cannot toggle the subtitles: Text displayed in the picture is not YouTube CC. Set up a separate supported caption-data feed if viewers need YouTube’s CC control.
- YouTube does not receive the OBS stream: Recheck the stream URL and key copied from the current Live Control Room event, and confirm the encoder settings. If you suspect the key has been exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- The stream buffers or drops frames: Reassess the resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and upload capacity. YouTube’s bitrate figures are recommendations, not a promise that a particular connection can sustain them.
Copyright and lesson content
Before streaming, make sure you have the rights or permissions needed for every part of the recording, including music, images, clips, and other third-party material. A lesson being pre-recorded or educational does not, by itself, establish that all included material may be broadcast. Review YouTube’s applicable rules and your permissions before scheduling the event.
