YouTube specifies stream settings such as resolution, bitrate and keyframe interval; OBS says performance depends on the encoder and workload. Choose memory for your scenes and other apps, and storage according to whether you will keep local recordings or large media files. A Mac mini can be configured for this kind of setup, but the available specifications do not prove that a particular model will operate continuously without interruption.
What RAM does a Mac mini need for 24/7 streaming?
Neither YouTube’s live encoder guidance nor OBS’s published requirements establishes a universal RAM target for 24/7 streaming. OBS explicitly cautions that meeting its basic compatibility requirements does not guarantee a system can stream or record successfully; CPU needs vary with encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity. Its macOS requirements list Intel or Apple Silicon and macOS 11 or later. (OBS system requirements)
Plan memory around what runs at the same time, not the word “24/7” alone. A simple OBS scene sending one video feed is a different workload from animated overlays, several browser sources, capture devices, simultaneous local recording, editing software and many open apps. A larger memory configuration may provide useful headroom for a heavier workload, but it is not an official requirement for YouTube streaming.
OBS documents Apple’s VideoToolbox hardware-encoding support on Apple Silicon, including H.264 streaming. Hardware encoding is relevant to choosing how OBS encodes video, but that support statement is not a guarantee of sustained performance for a particular stream or scene. (OBS hardware encoding)

How much storage do you need?
Sending a live stream to YouTube does not, by itself, set a local SSD requirement. YouTube’s encoder settings prescribe stream output, not the capacity of your Mac’s internal drive. If you are not keeping local recordings or large source files, a larger SSD is not established as necessary just to send the stream.
If you record locally, estimate space from the recording bitrate, recording duration and how long you intend to retain files. Include room for macOS, applications and other media. Those choices vary, so there is no single useful storage figure for every streamer. An external SSD can suit a workflow that retains recordings or source media; it does not add unified memory.

Current Mac mini configurations to compare
Apple’s 2026 Mac mini specifications list the M6 tier with 16GB unified memory and a 256GB SSD as its starting configuration, configurable to 24GB or 32GB of memory and 512GB, 1TB or 2TB of storage. The M5 Pro tier starts at 24GB memory and 512GB storage, with listed options up to 48GB or 64GB memory and 8TB storage. Apple lists hardware-accelerated H.264, HEVC, ProRes and ProRes RAW encode support for these systems. These are product configurations and capabilities, not streaming minimums. For the 2024 generation, Apple’s specifications list M4 starting at 16GB unified memory and 256GB SSD, with larger options; M4 Pro starts at 24GB memory and 512GB storage, also with larger options. Apple lists hardware video encode engines for both chips. When choosing among them, match memory to simultaneous apps and scene complexity, and match SSD size to local recordings and media retention. Also account for the stream’s resolution, frame rate, codec and bitrate, and for practical needs such as stable networking and power continuity. The listed specs do not compare these systems in a long-duration streaming test.
Set up the stream profile and test the real workload
YouTube’s encoder recommendations depend on codec, resolution and frame rate. For H.264, it lists 14 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Its RTMP/RTMPS guidance calls for constant bitrate (CBR), recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds; it supports up to 60 fps and lists H.264, H.265 and AV1. These are stream-output recommendations, not RAM requirements. Check YouTube’s current page when configuring other resolutions, frame rates or codecs. - Configure the encoder for the intended stream. In OBS, select an encoder supported by your system and set the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate and keyframe interval to match YouTube’s current guidance for that profile. For Apple Silicon, OBS documents VideoToolbox support, including H.264 streaming.
- Use the intended scene and audio. Include the browser overlays, animated sources, capture devices and audio you plan to run during the actual broadcast. A test with a simpler scene will not represent a heavier production.
- Test before relying on the setup. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion before the stream and monitoring stream health while live. Watch for encoder overload, dropped frames or stream-health warnings, and reduce scene complexity or adjust the profile if problems appear.
- Plan for continuity beyond the computer. A 24/7 use case also depends on network stability and what happens after a power loss or restart. The cited Apple and OBS documentation does not guarantee uninterrupted operation or identify a configuration proven for a full 24/7 workload. Test for a representative duration and plan how to restore the stream.
Can a Mac mini run OBS 24/7?
OBS and Apple document the relevant software compatibility and hardware-encoding capabilities, but those specifications do not establish that a particular Mac mini will stay online continuously. Nor do they certify a model for an uninterrupted 24/7 workload. Treat continuous operation as something to validate with your own scene, settings, network and recording workflow—not as a guaranteed result of meeting a minimum spec.
During testing, check OBS’s performance indicators and YouTube’s stream health, using the same sources, audio, output profile and recording settings intended for normal use. Consider wired networking where practical, power continuity, restart behavior and a recovery plan if the connection or stream drops.
