To add an overlay to a YouTube livestream, add it as a source in a streaming app such as OBS Studio, then position it in the scene before you go live. Use an Image source for a static graphic, Text for editable copy, or a Browser source for hosted alerts, chat, and other web-based widgets.

Choose the right overlay method

Overlay you want OBS source or route Best suited to
Local image Image source Static frames, banners, logos, and labels
Editable words Text source Titles, schedule information, and simple labels
Hosted alerts, chat, or widgets Browser source with the provider’s overlay URL Web-rendered elements such as alerts, goals, and chat boxes
Provider-designed scene or overlay Provider-specific import, plugin, or Browser source Designs and multiple widgets managed in an overlay editor

OBS describes a Browser source as a way to “Add a web page to your scene. This is primarily used for stream alert overlays and chat boxes” (OBS Project Sources Guide). Its tutorial also explains that alerts can be added without a plugin (OBS Project Stream Layout Tutorial 2: Alerts & Chat Box).

Add a local image or text overlay in OBS

  1. Select the scene. In OBS, select the scene that will be used for the YouTube broadcast, or create a new scene for it.
  2. Add a source. In the Sources dock, click the plus button. Choose Image for a graphic or Text for editable words. OBS’s Sources Guide documents Image, Text, and Browser as source types.
  3. Set the content. For an Image source, choose the graphic file. For a Text source, enter the copy and set its style in the source properties.
  4. Place it in the composition. Drag and resize the source in the scene preview. Keep important gameplay, camera footage, and stream information visible.
  5. Inspect the full scene. Check the composition in the preview at the size and aspect ratio you plan to stream. Make adjustments before broadcasting.

Add hosted alerts, chat, or widgets with a Browser source

  1. Get the overlay URL. In the provider’s overlay manager or editor, copy the URL for the overlay or widget you want to show. Treat account-linked widget URLs as private; anyone who obtains one may be able to use or view the associated widget.
  2. Add a Browser source in OBS. Select the correct scene, click the plus button in the Sources dock, and choose Browser.
  3. Paste the URL and set dimensions. Enter the provider URL and set the Browser source width and height to match the stream canvas. StreamElements uses 1920 by 1080 as a default example when no different canvas is specified; use dimensions that fit your own scene. Its guide also suggests choosing 30 or 60 FPS in light of the stream settings and computer capability (StreamElements overlay guide).
  4. Position and test it. Resize or reposition the Browser source in the preview, then use the provider’s preview or test-alert control to verify that the content appears and fits before going live.

Use Streamlabs or StreamElements overlays

Streamlabs

Streamlabs documents several ways to use an overlay: import a .overlay file into Streamlabs Desktop, add image files manually to scenes, use its OBS plugin, or import scenes into OBS. For alerts in OBS without the plugin, copy the Alert Box Widget URL into an OBS Browser source. Use the test controls in Streamlabs to check alerts before broadcasting. See Streamlabs’ overlay setup guide and alert setup guide.

StreamElements

Copy the overlay URL from the StreamElements overlay manager or editor, add a Browser source in OBS, paste the URL, and set dimensions and frame rate to suit the stream. The editor supports visual assets and widgets including labels, goals, chat, and alerts. Follow its overlay guide for the current editor workflow.

These are different setup routes, not evidence that one provider produces better quality or performance. Choose based on whether you need a local asset, a web-rendered widget, or provider-managed scenes and design tools.

Check the overlay before the broadcast

  • Confirm the overlay source is in the scene that will actually be live.
  • For Browser sources, check the pasted URL and confirm the source has dimensions suited to the stream canvas.
  • Look for cropped, misplaced, or oversized elements in the scene preview.
  • Trigger a test alert or provider preview if the overlay includes event-driven elements.
  • Do not publish a private, account-linked overlay URL.

Troubleshoot missing or misplaced overlays

The hosted overlay is not visible

Verify that the Browser source contains the intended provider URL, has usable dimensions, and is included in the active scene. Use the provider’s preview to check whether the overlay itself is producing content.

An alert does not appear

Check the provider’s alert configuration and use its test control before the broadcast. Streamlabs documents test controls in its alert setup guide.
