Yes, but VLC alone is not established as a turnkey YouTube Live encoder. On Windows, you can use VLC to play or process a prerecorded file, then send that video through a YouTube-capable encoder configured with the event’s stream URL and key. If your encoder can load the video file itself, you can skip VLC and use it as the source.
What VLC does—and what YouTube Live needs
VLC can play media and process files it can read, including sending output over a network. YouTube Live’s documented encoder workflow, by contrast, has you connect an encoder using the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. That makes VLC useful as a playback or source tool, while a YouTube-capable encoder handles sending the live feed to YouTube. VideoLAN documents VLC’s stream-output chain, including network output and transcoding, but the reviewed official documentation does not establish VLC by itself as a turnkey YouTube Live encoder. Choose how to get the prerecorded video into the encoder

Set up a Windows encoder for YouTube Live
- Check channel access. Confirm live streaming is enabled for your YouTube channel and that no active restriction prevents you from going live.
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key provided for that event. YouTube’s interface labels may change, but the encoder workflow uses those connection details. YouTube encoder setup.
- Configure the encoder. Select YouTube as the service if the encoder offers it, or enter the stream URL and key manually. Prefer RTMPS if the encoder supports it and Live Control Room supplies an RTMPS URL. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream connection. - Add the video source. Either load the prerecorded file as a media source in the encoder, or use VLC for playback and configure the encoder to receive that playback. The exact routing steps depend on the encoder; VLC’s documented stream-output capability does not specify a universal capture or handoff method for every Windows encoder. - Match output settings to the source and connection. Choose a resolution and frame rate your video and upload capacity can sustain. Select the bitrate guidance for the actual codec, resolution and frame rate rather than treating the figures below as interchangeable. For YouTube’s H.264 guidance, 720p at 30 fps has a 2 Mbps minimum and 4 Mbps recommended bitrate; 1080p at 30 fps has a 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended; 1080p at 60 fps has a 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended. - Start the encoder and check the preview. Wait for the Live Control Room preview and confirm both audio and video are present before starting the public event. Test the setup ahead of time and monitor stream health while live. YouTube encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.
- End the event deliberately. Stop the encoder and confirm in Live Control Room that the event has ended as expected.
Protect your stream key
Treat the stream key like a password: it authorizes an encoder to send video to your stream. Do not publish it or share it with anyone who should not be able to broadcast on your channel. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube’s stream settings and update the encoder with the replacement key. YouTube encoder setup.

Account for copyright and live-stream eligibility
A prerecorded file still needs to comply with YouTube’s rules. Use footage, music and other material you own or are authorized to broadcast, and check your channel’s current live-stream eligibility before scheduling an event. A video being playable in VLC does not establish that you have the rights to stream it or that YouTube will permit the broadcast. Review YouTube’s current policies and the restrictions shown for your channel before going live.

Troubleshooting
- YouTube does not detect the encoder. Check that the encoder is running, the event’s stream URL and key are correct, and the selected connection type matches the URL. If available, use the RTMPS URL with an encoder that supports it.
- The preview appears, but there is no picture or sound. Verify the encoder is receiving the intended file or VLC playback and that the source is not paused or muted. Confirm both audio and video in the preview before going live.
- The stream stutters or YouTube reports poor health. Check upload capacity and reduce output resolution, frame rate or bitrate to a level the connection can sustain. Use the YouTube recommendation for the chosen codec and output mode; do not exceed the keyframe interval guidance.
- The encoder connects but the event does not go public. Check the Live Control Room event workflow and start the event there when prompted. Starting an encoder feed and starting the public event may be separate steps.
- The key may have been exposed. Reset the key in YouTube’s stream settings, then replace the old value in the encoder.
- VLC plays the file but the encoder receives nothing. VLC playback alone does not define a universal Windows source-routing method. Use the encoder’s own media-file source if available, or consult the encoder’s instructions for receiving external playback.
