This works only when the files’ encoded streams and timing are compatible; stream copy will not fix mismatched codecs, add overlays, resize video, or change frame rate. You’ll also need the Mac mini and a reliable internet connection running for the duration of the stream.
What this method does—and what it does not
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads an ordered list of local files as one input. With compatible tracks, -c copy passes the existing encoded audio and video packets to the output instead of decoding and encoding them again. The list is local to FFmpeg; it is not a playlist uploaded to YouTube.
Stream copy is not a format-conversion or production tool. It cannot reconcile incompatible tracks, resize or change frame rate, or add overlays. If your files do not fit the compatibility requirements, make consistent intermediate files before streaming or use an encoding workflow instead.
Prepare the YouTube Live event
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule an encoder-based live stream. Confirm that your channel is eligible and has no restrictions that would prevent streaming. First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube Help.
- In the event settings, copy the stream URL and stream key. Enter these in the encoder command as described below. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a stream to your event.
- Choose the event’s privacy setting—public, private, or unlisted—and make sure you have the rights to distribute the prerecorded video and audio. YouTube also requires streams to comply with its Community Guidelines. See YouTube’s live-stream settings guidance.
Check whether the files can be joined without re-encoding
Before building the command, inspect the playlist as a group. The files need compatible stream structure, codecs, and timing for concat stream copy. Different containers, audio tracks, timestamps, or stream layouts can cause errors or an output that does not play correctly. There is no guarantee that a particular set of files will work unchanged; test the exact inputs and FFmpeg build you intend to use.

- If the files are compatible, proceed with
-c copy. - If they differ in ways stream copy cannot handle, create a consistent intermediate encode or use a re-encoding workflow. Re-encoding permits normalization and transformations, but takes a new encode pass.
The available guidance does not establish a minimum Mac mini generation or macOS version for this procedure. Confirm that your installed FFmpeg build supports the output protocol you use, then test with your actual files and event before scheduling a broadcast.
Create the ordered playlist file
Put the videos in the desired order in a plain-text file named playlist.txt. Use one file line per video, with the path to that file:

Send the playlist to YouTube Live with FFmpeg
Open Terminal, navigate to the folder containing playlist.txt or provide its full path, then run this command after replacing the placeholder with the current ingest URL and stream key from Live Control Room:

This is a starting example, not a guarantee that every combination of source files and destination will work as written. Use the ingest URL and key shown for your event, and do not paste a real key into a public article, screenshot, repository, or shared playlist file. If you think the key has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room using YouTube’s documented stream-key controls.
Verify the preview and monitor the stream
- Wait for the stream to appear in the Live Control Room preview. Check both picture and sound before the event goes public.
- If the event is scheduled for manual start, click Go live after verifying the preview.
- Keep an eye on FFmpeg output, the Live Control Room status, and your network while the stream runs. YouTube recommends testing in advance, previewing before starting, and monitoring stream quality; its guidance recommends upload capacity with 20% headroom above the total outgoing bitrate. That is a recommendation, not a guarantee against network congestion. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and troubleshooting tips.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume the same archive behavior for longer streams; see YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.

Common problems and what to check
- FFmpeg reports mismatched streams or fails while joining files: compare the files’ codecs, track layout, and timing. Stream copy cannot normalize incompatible inputs; prepare consistent intermediate files or use an encode workflow.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: confirm that the event is active, the ingest URL and key match that event, and the installed FFmpeg build supports the selected output protocol. Never share the key when asking for help.
- The preview stutters or drops quality: check available upload capacity against the total outgoing bitrate, leaving the 20% headroom YouTube recommends. Other devices and network congestion can reduce available bandwidth.
- The computer, FFmpeg process, or connection stops: the local workflow depends on the Mac mini, software, and connection staying available. The cited YouTube guidance does not establish automatic recovery from a Mac restart, FFmpeg crash, or network outage, so unattended operation needs separate supervision and recovery planning.
