Neither AWS Lightsail nor Hetzner is the automatic winner. The better fit depends on your stream’s bitrate, server region, audience location, whether the server only relays an already-encoded video or transcodes it, and how much server administration you want to handle. Compare the full regional cost—including transfer, public IP, and taxes—with your expected continuous traffic. A VPS provider’s plan price does not guarantee that your encoder, network route, YouTube ingest, and broadcast will stay healthy.
Start by defining what the server will do
A “server-based playlist stream” can mean two different workloads. A server may repeatedly send an already-encoded file or playlist to YouTube, or it may decode and re-encode media while streaming. The second case needs more sustained CPU capacity. It may also change storage and network requirements, depending on whether the server loops a local file or fetches media elsewhere.
- Relay or loop: The server sends an existing encoded feed. Estimate outbound transfer from its bitrate and runtime.
- Transcode: The server processes media into a new output stream. Do not infer adequate encoding performance from a vCPU count alone; test the actual workload.
AWS says that for highly configurable instances with consistently high CPU performance for applications such as video encoding, it recommends Amazon EC2 rather than Lightsail. AWS Lightsail instance FAQ.
Compare the costs that affect a 24/7 stream
Lightsail packages compute, storage, and a transfer allowance into monthly plans. Hetzner Cloud Server pricing varies by resource class and location, and its public IPv4 address is a separately documented charge. Check the exact plan and region before treating either provider’s headline price as your total.

| Cost or plan factor | AWS Lightsail | Hetzner Cloud |
|---|---|---|
| Plan structure | Monthly bundles combine compute, storage, and transfer. AWS’s cited Linux/Unix public IPv4 entry bundle is $5/month and includes 0.5 GB memory, 2 vCPUs, 20 GB SSD, and 1 TB transfer. See the Lightsail pricing page for current plan details. | Price depends on resource class and location. Hetzner distinguishes shared and dedicated resource options; compare the actual plan rather than treating all vCPUs as equivalent. See the Cloud overview. |
| Transfer | Inbound and outbound traffic count toward the allowance. AWS may charge for excess outbound traffic. Its allowance is half the ordinary amount in Mumbai, Sydney, Jakarta, Malaysia, Hong Kong, and São Paulo; confirm the current allowance for your selected region. AWS Lightsail transfer limits. | Traffic allowance depends on product and location. Hetzner’s traffic documentation lists 20 TB for EU CX Cloud Servers; verify the allowance and terms for the specific plan you select. Hetzner traffic documentation. |
| Public IPv4 | Included in the cited public IPv4 entry bundle. | The Cloud overview lists Primary IPv4 at €0.50/month excluding VAT. The overview was last changed on 2022-06-28, so verify that the charge still applies to your plan and location. Hetzner Cloud Server overview. |
| Geography | Region affects availability and transfer allowance. Check whether the region you need offers the selected plan. | Hetzner lists Cloud Server locations in Europe, the USA, and Singapore. Compare the available location with your audience and the YouTube ingest route. Hetzner Cloud overview. |
These figures are not a like-for-like performance benchmark. For a fair cost comparison, select a region and comparable resources, add public IPv4 and any applicable tax, then compare the transfer allowance and excess-traffic terms for the same stream workload.

Decimal TB ≈ bitrate in Mbps × seconds streamed ÷ 8,000,000.
YouTube recommends 14 Mbps H.264 for 1080p30. At that bitrate, streaming continuously for 30 days (2,592,000 seconds) sends about 4.54 decimal TB of video payload, before protocol overhead or other traffic. That is an arithmetic estimate based on the stated bitrate and runtime, not a YouTube-published transfer figure. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

Scale the estimate linearly: half the bitrate uses about half the payload over the same runtime. Leave room for protocol overhead and any other server traffic. For Lightsail, remember that inbound as well as outbound traffic counts toward the allowance, while AWS’s cited FAQ says excess outbound traffic may be billed. For Hetzner, check the chosen product’s location-specific allowance and terms rather than applying the EU CX figure to every Cloud Server.
Choose based on your region, workload, and operating style
Lightsail may suit a bundled, AWS-integrated setup
Lightsail’s appeal is a straightforward monthly bundle that combines common server resources and transfer, with integration into AWS services. Its allowance and excess-traffic economics vary by region, so a bundle that looks adequate in one location may not be adequate in another. AWS Lightsail features.

Hetzner may suit a location- and resource-specific comparison
Hetzner Cloud Server costs depend on resource class and location, and its documentation separates the public IP charge from the server price. Its traffic allowances also depend on product and location. Compare the complete selected configuration and verify the traffic terms for it; a large allowance in one region does not establish the terms elsewhere.
Neither plan price establishes broadcast reliability
There is no comparable workload benchmark, measured route quality, or end-to-end availability guarantee established for these providers in this use case. YouTube ingest and the encoder are part of the path too. Choose based on the configuration you can operate, then test the actual stream and recovery behavior rather than treating the VPS plan as a broadcast guarantee.

Configure YouTube ingest and test the complete path
- Prepare the playlist feed. Decide whether the server loops a local file, fetches media, or transcodes it. Confirm the process can read all media and produce a stable audio/video feed.
- Set the encoder for YouTube. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest. Use constant bitrate (CBR); set a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. For 1080p30 H.264, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps. Follow YouTube’s guidance for the output resolution and frame rate you actually intend to send. YouTube live encoder settings.
- Connect with your stream key. Enter the key in the encoder’s destination settings as required by your chosen software. Treat it like a password: do not expose it in public scripts, logs, screenshots, or shared configuration.
- Run a representative test before relying on the stream. Include audio and movement similar to the real playlist, and confirm that YouTube receives the feed. YouTube advises testing before going live and monitoring stream health during the event. YouTube’s test and monitoring guidance.
- Plan process recovery yourself. Configure and test how the playlist or encoder process restarts after failure, and verify that it reconnects to YouTube. A process restart alone does not prove that the broadcast is healthy; check the received feed and stream health after recovery.
Account for copyright and channel-policy risk
Technical continuity does not give you the right to broadcast every video in a playlist. Use material you own or are authorized to stream, and check the rights for music, footage, and other included content. YouTube may act on a live stream that violates its policies or rights requirements. A server that loops material also does not by itself establish that the resulting channel meets YouTube’s monetization policies; review the current rules that apply to your channel and content.
Keep the stream key private and avoid placing it in a publicly accessible playlist or script. If you rotate a key after exposure, update the encoder configuration and verify that the stream reconnects with the new credential.
Troubleshoot the common failure points
- The stream stops after running for a while: Compare actual monthly outbound transfer with the regional allowance and check whether other traffic is using it. Also inspect the playlist and encoder process rather than assuming a provider outage.
- YouTube does not receive a stable feed: Check the ingest protocol, stream key, encoder output, and YouTube stream-health messages. Test the same path with representative audio and motion.
- The server struggles while encoding: Determine whether it is transcoding rather than relaying an already-encoded file. Measure the real workload; AWS specifically points workloads needing consistently high CPU performance, such as video encoding, toward EC2.
- A restart does not restore the broadcast: Confirm the process restarted, the media source is reachable, the key is valid, and YouTube is receiving the feed. Add monitoring that checks the broadcast state, not just whether a process exists.
- The bill differs from the plan price: Check region-specific transfer allowance, excess outbound use, public IPv4, and taxes. On Lightsail, inbound and outbound both count toward the allowance; on Hetzner, verify the selected plan’s location-specific traffic terms.
Or let it run in the cloud
If managing a VPS, encoder process, and recovery setup is more work than you want, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping to YouTube from the cloud. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
