How to Reduce CPU Usage When Looping Videos to YouTube Live from a VPS

The most effective first step is to avoid unnecessary re-encoding. Learn when FFmpeg stream copy works, how to loop and pace a file, and what to check if CPU or stream health remains a problem.

The biggest CPU reduction usually comes from not re-encoding the video: if your source codecs and output are compatible, use FFmpeg stream copy with -c copy. It passes the encoded streams through instead of decoding and encoding them again. If conversion, resizing, filters, or overlays are necessary, reduce the encoding workload deliberately and measure the result on your VPS.

First check whether FFmpeg is re-encoding

FFmpeg describes transcoding as decoding and then encoding a stream. Encoding can be computationally expensive, so its documentation recommends stream copy when you do not need to transcode. With compatible input streams and output, -c copy avoids the video-encoding workload. It does not make an incompatible codec compatible, nor can it apply video filters that require decoding.

Before changing the command, inspect the running FFmpeg process and the input file’s video and audio codecs, dimensions, frame rate, and container. The right choice depends on those details and on the output YouTube accepts. There is no single CPU-saving percentage that applies to every VPS or file.

When stream copy fits

  • The source video and audio codecs are accepted by YouTube and can be carried in the chosen output format.
  • You do not need to resize, change frame rate, add a filter, or otherwise transform the video.
  • The source’s bitrate and keyframe behavior are suitable for the live stream.

When you must encode

If a codec is incompatible, or you need a filter, resize, overlay, or other transformation, re-encoding may be necessary. You can sometimes copy the video and encode only audio that needs conversion, but validate both streams and the output format before relying on that setup. Stream copy is an optimization, not a universal compatibility fix.

  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Loop and pace the file correctly

For a file input, FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 requests infinite looping; -re reads the file at its native frame rate. Put input options before the corresponding -i. Real-time pacing is useful when packet timing matters for live streaming, but it is not itself a CPU optimization if the command still re-encodes.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i input.mp4 -c copy -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

This is an illustrative command shape, not a tested, universal command. Replace the destination with the ingest URL and stream key YouTube provides for your broadcast, and confirm that the input codecs, muxer, and protocol are compatible. FFmpeg option support and behavior can also depend on the installed build.

Treat the stream key like a password: do not post it, include it in screenshots, or leave it in shell history or logs that other users can read. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP, for live streaming. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance and the FFmpeg documentation.

Choose YouTube-compatible output settings

If stream copy is unsuitable and you re-encode, select the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval together. YouTube’s English-language encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion and H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, up to 60 fps; it recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Follow the current YouTube settings for the codec and output you choose.

YouTube H.264 example Minimum bitrate Recommended bitrate
1080p at 30 fps 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
720p at 30 fps 3 Mbps 8 Mbps

These are YouTube Help’s published ingestion figures, not CPU benchmarks or guarantees of quality for every source. YouTube’s guidance varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate; check its current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions rather than treating these two examples as universal targets.

If encoding is still necessary

  • Consider a lower resolution or frame rate if that still meets your viewers’ needs. Lower output demands may reduce encoding work, but the result depends on the encoder settings, content, and VPS allocation.
  • Use settings YouTube supports, including CBR and the recommended keyframe interval, and choose bitrate for the intended codec, resolution, and frame rate.
  • Measure CPU use after each change and watch for dropped frames or degraded picture quality. Do not assume a particular reduction without measuring your own stream.

Test the complete stream and check the VPS network

Test before relying on a long-running broadcast. Confirm that the video and audio play as expected, that the stream reaches YouTube, and that YouTube Studio’s stream health does not report problems. YouTube advises monitoring stream health and messages and recommends leaving 20% upload bandwidth headroom. That is a network recommendation, not a CPU target.

See YouTube’s streaming tips for testing, monitoring, and network guidance. A VPS may have adequate CPU but insufficient or unstable outbound bandwidth; changing the encoder will not fix that network constraint.

Troubleshoot high CPU or a failing loop

Symptom Likely cause What to check
CPU remains high with -c copy The command may still encode a stream, or another process may use CPU. Inspect the full FFmpeg command for encoder options such as libx264 and filters. Check actual process usage and confirm that -c copy applies to the intended output streams.
FFmpeg rejects the output or YouTube will not accept it Input codec, audio, container, muxer, or protocol may be incompatible. Inspect the input streams and validate the output format. Re-encode only the stream that needs conversion when the rest can be copied.
Video is not paced as expected Input options may be in the wrong position, or the installed FFmpeg build/input may behave differently. Place -re and -stream_loop -1 before the relevant -i, then verify the run with your build and file.
Stream health reports connection or delivery trouble Outbound bandwidth or connection stability may be inadequate. Test the complete stream, review YouTube’s health messages, and allow the recommended network headroom.
Stream stops after a disconnect The FFmpeg process or connection may have ended; looping the input does not by itself guarantee reconnection. Check process and network logs, and verify how your chosen process manager or service handles reconnects before depending on it for continuous operation.

Other ways to reduce VPS encoding work

  • Stream copy: the least video-encoding work when the source and output are compatible; it cannot filter or convert the video.
  • Software re-encoding: supports conversion and transformations, but CPU demand varies with codec, settings, content, and VPS allocation. No universal benchmark establishes the savings from a particular setting.
  • Hardware encoding: can move encoding work to supported hardware, but only if your VPS exposes a usable device and your FFmpeg build supports it. YouTube lists NVIDIA NVENC as hardware-based encoding; that does not establish that a given VPS has access to it.
  • Managed continuous-stream services: may remove the need to manage an FFmpeg process yourself. Confirm prerecorded-loop support, pricing, reliability, and platform fit before switching. YouTube lists Gyre for continuous prerecorded streams and Upstream.so for 24/7 live video streaming; those listings alone do not establish their performance or suitability for your exact workflow. See YouTube’s encoder and service information.

Keep the video eligible for YouTube Live

Technical compatibility does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast the recording or that it complies with YouTube’s policies. Confirm that you have permission for the video and audio, and check YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization rules for copyright and reused content before running a continuous stream. A stream key and a successful encoder connection do not grant content rights.
