How to Run a 24/7 YouTube Stream From a VPS Under ₹500 a Month

A VPS can run an always-on YouTube stream, but staying under ₹500 a month depends on transfer, overages and workload—not just the advertised server price.

Possibly—but a VPS price below ₹500 a month does not by itself make a reliable 24/7 YouTube stream fit that budget. The key constraint is usually outbound transfer: at YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrates, a 30-day stream carries about 2.592 TB of video payload at 720p and 4.536 TB at 1080p, before audio and protocol overhead. Check the VPS’s transfer allowance, overage charges, taxes and renewal price before choosing a plan.

Can a VPS keep a YouTube stream running for under ₹500 a month?

A VPS can send a continuous stream, but the available evidence does not establish a specific India-region VPS plan that both costs no more than ₹500 all-in and reliably supports a particular 24/7 workflow. Treat ₹500 as a ceiling for the complete monthly bill—not just the advertised virtual machine price. Include outbound data, storage, taxes, currency conversion and any overage fees.

For a prerecorded channel, the VPS workload can be relatively light if it relays compatible, already-encoded media without re-encoding. Encoding or transcoding video in real time is a different workload: sustained CPU capacity becomes important, and a plan’s suitability needs to be tested with the actual media and settings.

Estimate monthly transfer before choosing a plan

YouTube’s official live encoder settings recommend these H.264 video bitrates for the listed resolutions and frame rates. The monthly payload estimates below are arithmetic using a 30-day month and 1 byte = 8 bits; they exclude audio, protocol overhead and differences in how providers account for transfer.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Stream setting YouTube-recommended H.264 video bitrate Estimated 30-day video payload
720p30 8 Mbps About 2.592 decimal TB
720p60 8 Mbps About 2.592 decimal TB
1080p30 14 Mbps About 4.536 decimal TB
1080p60 17 Mbps About 5.508 decimal TB

These are video payload estimates, not a guaranteed provider billing total. Audio and streaming overhead add to the actual traffic, and a provider may count data using units or policies that differ from these decimal-TB calculations. Compare your plan’s stated transfer unit and billing rules with the stream you intend to run.

What to check on a VPS plan

Do not compare plans on monthly price alone. For example, DigitalOcean’s official Droplet pricing table lists a $4/month plan with 500 GiB of transfer, a $12/month plan with 2,000 GiB, and an $18/month plan with 3,000 GiB (accessed 2026). Those are USD examples, not a claim about an Indian checkout total or a recommendation for this workload. The listed allowances are also below the estimated monthly video payload for the 720p examples above, before audio and overhead.

  1. Choose the stream first. Write down resolution, frame rate, video codec and target bitrate. The transfer estimate depends on bitrate and how continuously you stream.
  2. Confirm the region. Check where the VPS is hosted and whether its connection can reach YouTube’s ingest endpoint reliably. Do not assume the cheapest listed location is the best for your stream.
  3. Read the transfer allowance and unit. Confirm whether the quota is monthly, whether it applies to outbound traffic, and how the provider defines GiB or TB.
  4. Price overages and billing details. Check what happens when the quota is exceeded, plus tax, currency conversion, the renewal price and the billing period. A promotional or entry price is not necessarily the recurring all-in cost.
  5. Match resources to the workflow. Relaying compatible pre-encoded video is not the same as encoding or transcoding it. For the latter, verify sustained CPU capacity using a realistic test on the actual plan; advertised VM specifications alone do not prove continuous performance.
  6. Plan for interruptions. Find out how you will detect a stopped process or dropped connection and restart the stream. Check what monitoring, restart handling and support are included rather than assuming a VPS will recover automatically.

Use YouTube-compatible encoder settings

YouTube’s official live encoder guide lists RTMP and RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video; frame rates up to 60 fps; constant bitrate (CBR); and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends RTMPS where supported and a two-second keyframe interval, which should not exceed four seconds. For H.264, its listed video bitrate recommendations include 8 Mbps for 720p30 and 720p60, 14 Mbps for 1080p30, and 17 Mbps for 1080p60.

  • Use the recommended bitrate for your chosen resolution and frame rate as a starting point, then make sure the VPS transfer allowance can support it for the full run.
  • Use CBR and set a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
  • Use RTMPS when your encoder and ingest setup support it.
  • Keep your YouTube stream key private. Enter it only in the streaming software or service that needs to connect to your channel; never publish it in a command, screenshot or public log.

Test the complete stream before leaving it unattended

YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Test with audio and movement similar to the intended stream, then check stream health and review any messages shown by YouTube. A static test image or short run may not reveal problems that appear with the real content or after sustained operation.

  1. Run the intended media and settings through the same VPS, encoder and ingest path you plan to use.
  2. Check YouTube’s stream health and messages while the test is running; confirm that video and audio reach the live preview as expected.
  3. Watch for resource pressure on the VPS if it encodes or transcodes. A successful short test does not establish that the plan can sustain that workload continuously.
  4. Verify that you can detect a stopped stream and restart the process. If your setup does not handle recovery automatically, decide how you will monitor it and respond.
  5. Recheck transfer usage and provider billing data after the test. Compare the observed rate with the plan quota and the monthly estimate, allowing for audio and overhead.

Copyright and YouTube channel rules still apply

Being able to transmit a video continuously does not establish that you have the rights to stream it or that it complies with YouTube’s policies. Use media you own or are licensed to broadcast, and check the relevant rights for music, gameplay footage and other material in the stream. A VPS, encoder or managed streaming service does not grant those rights. Do not assume that looping prerecorded material is acceptable for every channel or eligible for monetization; review YouTube’s current policies for your channel and content before going live.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you would rather not administer a VPS, StreamNeo is a managed option for keeping an uploaded video or playlist live on YouTube. Upload your media, add your YouTube stream key, then go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it runs continuously from the cloud, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams the uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality-based tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Plans are available by day, week, month, six months or year, with cancellation any time; UPI and cards are supported in India, and cards are accepted worldwide. Each slot includes 10 GB of storage, pooled across active slots, plus looping, playlists and team support. StreamNeo is for uploaded video on YouTube, not live camera input.
