Can a Raspberry Pi 5 Run a Nonstop Prerecorded YouTube Livestream?

A Raspberry Pi 5 may run a prerecorded YouTube livestream, but software encoding and 24/7 reliability need testing. YouTube may not archive streams over 12 hours.

Yes, in principle—but a Raspberry Pi 5 is not a guaranteed 24/7 streaming appliance. It uses software video encoders, and sustained performance depends on whether your setup can pass through the video or must decode and re-encode it. YouTube’s ingestion settings provide a target, not proof that the Pi can meet it continuously. Test the complete setup before relying on it, and do not expect YouTube to archive a stream that runs beyond 12 hours.

What the Pi 5 can—and cannot—be assumed to do

Raspberry Pi documentation states that “Raspberry Pi 5 uses software video encoders.” Its description of a low-latency camera workflow says it can achieve 1080p30, but that is a camera-encoding scenario, not a sustained-performance guarantee for every prerecorded file, filter, or 24/7 workload. Software encoding can add latency; the documented trade-offs also include slightly worse coding efficiency, less efficient use of multiple processor cores, and a potentially slightly lower maximum frame rate.

The workload depends on the whole pipeline. If the file’s video already matches YouTube’s requirements and your encoder workflow can pass it through without re-encoding, that may reduce CPU demand. It is conditional: changes to resolution, overlays, filters, or audio may require additional processing. Verify the selected file, audio, container, software, and operating-system workflow together rather than assuming that any video will loop unchanged.

Set YouTube-compatible stream targets

YouTube accepts RTMP or RTMPS ingestion and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video at up to 60 fps. For RTMP/RTMPS, it lists AAC or MP3 audio and recommends constant-bitrate video encoding. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Its current encoder guidance gives these H.264 bitrate figures:

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Output Minimum video bitrate Recommended video bitrate
720p30 3 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 5 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 6 Mbps 17 Mbps

These are YouTube ingestion targets, not evidence that a Pi 5 can continuously software-encode each mode. If you are encoding on the Pi, start with a lower resolution and frame rate that are acceptable for the content, and test before moving up. Keep your available upload capacity above the chosen video bitrate to leave room for audio and network variation.

  • Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.
  • Stereo audio: YouTube lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
  • Stream health: Check the actual feed in YouTube Live Control Room; a configured bitrate alone does not establish that the received stream is healthy.

YouTube transcodes the ingested stream into viewer formats, so the encoder’s job is to send a compatible feed reliably—not to create every playback resolution itself.

Set up and test the local workflow

YouTube’s general encoder workflow is to get the stream URL and key from Live Control Room, enter them in the encoder, start sending the feed, and monitor stream health. A prerecorded file also needs software that continuously supplies it as a live encoder input. The official documentation cited here does not provide a tested Raspberry Pi 5 procedure for indefinitely looping a prerecorded file; a software encoder such as FFmpeg is an implementation option only after you verify its behavior with your OS, codecs, and chosen workflow.

  1. Prepare the media. Check the video codec, resolution, frame rate, container, and audio format. Decide whether the workflow can pass the encoded video through or must re-encode it. Include any planned audio conversion, overlays, or filters in the test.
  2. Choose a conservative output. Select a supported resolution and frame rate, a suitable bitrate from YouTube’s H.264 targets if using H.264, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval. For stereo audio, use the listed 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 kbps target.
  3. Get YouTube’s ingest details. In YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key and enter them in your encoder. Treat the key as a credential; do not publish or share it.
  4. Run a representative test. Test the actual file and complete pipeline, including the intended audio and any processing. YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and movement before going live.
  5. Check the received stream. Confirm the feed appears and inspect stream health in Live Control Room. Do not treat a successful encoder launch as proof that the stream is stable.
  6. Test continuity before depending on it. Run the setup long enough to surface heat, power, storage, process, or network problems, and verify that your playback software continues feeding the file as intended. This is a reliability check, not a published Pi 5 endurance result.

Plan for interruptions and archives

A Pi-based stream depends on the Pi, its power supply, storage, software, and internet connection remaining available. A local setup gives you control, but you are responsible for maintaining those parts and recovering if the encoder or connection stops. Keep a local recording if you need a dependable copy of the source or a backup archive.

A nonstop live feed is not the same thing as a complete YouTube replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived, but a stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all. Long-running streams may also have limited or unavailable DVR rewind beyond 12 hours. If you need a complete recording, do not rely on one uninterrupted YouTube session to produce it.

Rights and monetization still apply

You must have the necessary rights for the video and audio you stream, including relevant music and rights involving other participants, and comply with YouTube’s rules and Community Guidelines. Prerecording the material does not remove those obligations.

Permission to use material and eligibility for monetization are separate questions. YouTube applies its monetization policies to livestreams: repetitive or mass-produced material may be considered “inauthentic content,” while reused-content review considers whether repurposed material has significant original commentary, modification, or educational or entertainment value. A loop is not automatically disallowed, but rights clearance alone does not guarantee that a channel or stream meets monetization requirements.

Local Pi or a cloud service?

YouTube’s verified encoder list names Gyre as a cloud option for 24/7 prerecorded streaming. The cited listing does not establish its current price or service terms. Choose a local Pi if you want to maintain the hardware, power, software, and network yourself and have verified that your media pipeline works. A cloud service is an alternative if your priority is not keeping a local computer running; compare current terms directly before choosing one.
