To stream a recorded Lutheran service continuously on YouTube from a Mac, play the video through OBS, enable its Loop setting, and send OBS to a YouTube Live stream using the stream URL and stream key. The Mac must stay powered, awake, connected to the internet, and running OBS for this do-it-yourself setup to continue. Before you broadcast or archive a service, confirm that your church has the rights needed for every part of the recording, including music.
What you need before starting
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s live-streaming tips and getting started with live streaming.
- A Mac that can play the recording and run OBS, plus a dependable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your chosen stream settings.
- The service recording saved locally in a format OBS can play. For several recordings, you can use OBS’s VLC Video source and a playlist; VLC must also be installed.
- Permission to stream and archive the recording and its contents. A church’s possession of a recording does not, by itself, establish online rebroadcast rights.
Confirm rights for the service recording
YouTube makes the content provider responsible for obtaining rights to live and archived content, including music licensing rights. Check the permissions that apply to the service as a whole and to individual elements such as hymns, other music, readings, images, and third-party material. The applicable rights can depend on the recording and the intended use; do not assume that permission to perform or record a work also covers livestreaming or an online archive. Read YouTube’s livestream terms.
Set up OBS to loop a recorded service
- Install and open OBS. Create a scene for the service, or use an existing scene intended for this broadcast.
- Add the recording. In the Sources panel, select + and choose Media Source. Name the source, select the service video file, and enable Loop. OBS says this setting replays the file when playback completes. See OBS Media Sources.
- Check the scene. Confirm that the video fits the canvas and that its audio is present in OBS’s audio mixer. Play enough of the recording to check both speech and music, and make sure no unintended desktop or microphone audio is being included.
- For multiple services, use a playlist source. Add a VLC Video source, select the files in the intended order, and enable Loop Playlist. This option requires VLC installed. A single Media Source with Loop is the simpler choice when repeating one recording.
OBS documents Media Source settings for macOS in its Media Sources guide. The exact controls available can vary with the installed OBS version.
Create the YouTube Live stream and connect OBS
- Open YouTube Studio’s live-stream setup. Create or schedule a stream, then use YouTube’s encoder workflow to obtain the stream URL and stream key. For the current steps and labels, consult YouTube’s live-streaming tips and manage live stream settings.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. In OBS, open Settings, then Stream; choose YouTube if available and enter the stream key, or use the service/custom server option to enter YouTube’s stream URL and key. OBS interface labels may vary by version. YouTube’s encoder setup explains how the URL and key connect the encoder feed to the stream.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not publish it, show it on screen, or send it to people who do not need access. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS.
- Start with a private test where appropriate. Set visibility to private or unlisted if that fits the church’s plan, start streaming from OBS, and check YouTube’s Live Control Room preview before making the stream public.
- Go live and verify playback. Confirm that YouTube receives the picture and sound, then start the live event in YouTube Studio if the setup requires a separate go-live confirmation.
YouTube lists OBS among verified encoders, while noting that listed encoders are third-party products, not products made by YouTube. See its encoder directory.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose stream quality and check upload capacity
Choose resolution and frame rate to suit the recording and the connection, rather than selecting the highest available setting by default. YouTube publishes encoder recommendations for resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in its live encoder settings guide. Use the row that matches the output you intend to send, then test the actual stream.
- YouTube recommends allowing 20% upload headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. For example, if your selected video and audio settings total 5 Mbps, aim for at least 6 Mbps of sustained available upload capacity. The connection must have room for ordinary variation, not merely reach the target in a brief speed test. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Use a reliable connection and test at the same resolution, frame rate, and bitrate planned for the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing in advance and checking the Live Control Room preview.
- A compatible USB-C Ethernet adapter is an optional way to connect a Mac to wired networking if its ports require one. Check the adapter’s compatibility with your specific Mac; YouTube does not endorse a particular adapter.
- Monitor the stream’s video and audio after it starts. A successful connection at the beginning does not establish that a long broadcast will remain uninterrupted.
Keep a Mac-based stream running continuously
For a local OBS setup to keep broadcasting, the Mac has to remain available, awake, connected to the network, and running OBS. Plan who will check the stream and respond if the Mac, internet connection, encoder, or YouTube feed stops. Continuous operation is an operational consequence of sending the stream from a local computer, not an uptime guarantee from YouTube or OBS.

Before leaving the stream unattended, test the full playback, including the transition when the recording loops. Make sure the Mac will not sleep, restart for an update, run out of power, or lose its network connection. Even with those precautions, a local setup depends on the home or church computer and connection.
Which continuous-streaming approach fits your church?
| Approach | Best fit | Trade-offs to plan for |
|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo — first choice for a cloud-run YouTube loop: it runs continuously from the cloud, supports uploaded video up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day. | A church that wants prerecorded YouTube playback without leaving a Mac running as the encoder. | It is a hosted service rather than a local OBS setup; check the workflow and plan that fit your church. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube. |
| OBS on a Mac | A volunteer or staff member can maintain the Mac, and local control of the recording is useful. | It relies on the Mac, its power and network connection, OBS remaining active, and monitoring. OBS Media Source can loop a file. |
| Another hosted service, such as Gyre | A church looking for a cloud-based service for continuous prerecorded streaming. | YouTube’s encoder directory describes Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 prerecorded streams, but that description does not establish current price, uptime terms, or suitability for a particular church. |
For scheduled rebroadcasts rather than uninterrupted 24/7 output, decide who will start and monitor each stream. For any approach, consider who handles a failure, available upload capacity, rights and archive handling, and total service or equipment cost. YouTube’s encoder directory is a starting point for identifying supported encoder options, not a guarantee of their current terms.

The preview buffers, drops frames, or looks unstable
Check available upload capacity against the selected total bitrate, including YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce output quality if the connection cannot sustain the current settings, and test again. YouTube recommends a reliable network and advance testing in its streaming tips.
The stream has picture but no sound, or the audio is wrong
Check that the source’s audio appears in OBS’s mixer and that the intended output device or audio routing is selected. Play representative speech and music during a private or unlisted test, then verify what arrives in YouTube’s preview before the public broadcast.
The broadcast ends when nobody is at the Mac
A local encoder requires the Mac, OBS, power, and network to remain available. Check sleep and power settings and arrange monitoring; if the church needs continuous playback without a local computer running, consider a hosted approach rather than treating a Mac setup as unattended infrastructure.
