You can use a Chromebook to set up a continuous YouTube broadcast of a podcast archive, but a browser-based cloud studio is the more dependable Chromebook-centered approach: it handles playback and encoding remotely rather than relying on ChromeOS to run a local encoder around the clock. YouTube’s encoder guide names Upstream as a browser-based cloud studio for 24/7 streams. Before you start: confirm the channel and archive are ready
Enable YouTube live streaming early
Your channel must be verified and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-streaming activation can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until broadcast day. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup requirements.
Confirm you can rebroadcast every part of the archive
Before you retransmit a podcast, confirm that you have the rights to the recordings and every element in them, including music, guest contributions, and any licensed clips. Ownership of the podcast recording alone does not necessarily establish permission to rebroadcast all included material on YouTube. You are responsible for checking the relevant licenses and permissions; no blanket permission can be assumed for a particular archive.
Choose a stream duration and backup plan
YouTube may automatically archive streams under 12 hours. If a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all, so do not rely on YouTube as the only copy of a long broadcast. Keep the original files or a separate recording, and plan shorter sessions if a YouTube archive is important. Which continuous-streaming approach works best on a Chromebook?
Use a browser-based cloud studio for the Chromebook-centered workflow
YouTube’s encoder guide identifies Upstream as a browser-based cloud studio for 24/7 streaming. A cloud workflow is a practical fit when the Chromebook is mainly for configuring and monitoring the broadcast: the continuous playback and encoding happen remotely, rather than depending on a Chromebook staying awake and connected. Upload or select your archive, configure playback and looping in the service, then connect it to YouTube with the stream URL and key. The YouTube guide establishes the browser-based 24/7 use case; current pricing, account requirements, detailed controls, and restart behavior are not established here, so check those directly with the service before committing.
Why installing OBS in ChromeOS Linux is not a dependable general recommendation
OBS lists Linux/Unix among its supported system categories, but that does not establish support for the ChromeOS environment. An OBS forum administrator says ChromeOS itself is unsupported because of platform limitations, including screen capture. ChromeOS Linux availability also varies: Google says Linux development environment support is available on devices launched in 2019 or later unless specified otherwise, and on some older listed devices. That Linux availability is not a guarantee that OBS will work reliably on a given Chromebook. You can experiment with a specific model and build, but there is no model-independent assurance that this route will work for an unattended continuous stream. Set up the YouTube stream and connect the archive

Enable live streaming. In YouTube Studio, complete any channel verification and live-stream activation steps. Allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation, and check that the channel has no live-streaming restriction that would prevent the broadcast.

Create or schedule the broadcast. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Choose the encoder workflow so YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key. Set the audience, visibility, title, and other stream details appropriate to your channel and intended viewers.

Protect the stream key. Enter the URL and key only in the cloud studio or streaming service you chose. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send video to your broadcast. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio and update the connected service.

Upload or select the podcast archive. In the chosen service, add the recording or playlist and configure the intended playback or loop behavior. Check how that service handles the end of a file, a playlist boundary, and a disconnected session; those details vary by service and should not be assumed.

Set an output profile the service and connection can sustain. YouTube’s encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265 and AV1 video options, AAC or MP3 audio, constant-bitrate encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. Use RTMPS where supported. Choose a resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate supported by the selected encoder and appropriate for the content; the guidance is not a guarantee that a particular cloud service offers every option. YouTube publishes recommended bitrate ranges by resolution and frame rate in its encoder settings guide.

Make the visual deliberate. A podcast stream may use a static cover image or simple visual rather than complex moving footage. Confirm that the selected service accepts and displays it as intended, and test that viewers can hear the audio clearly throughout playback.

Run a private or unlisted test before going public. Start with content similar to the planned broadcast. Confirm that YouTube receives the signal, the preview appears, audio is audible, playback and looping behave correctly, and stream health remains stable. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring quality; use the Live Control Room’s preview and stream-health indicators before making the broadcast public. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.

Start the public broadcast and monitor it. Once the test passes, set the intended visibility and start the broadcast through the service and YouTube workflow. Keep an eye on stream health and retain your independent archive copy, especially if the session is long.
Make the internet connection reliable enough
The outgoing stream has to fit within the Chromebook’s available upload capacity when the Chromebook is sending it, or within the cloud service’s connection when that service is sending it. YouTube advises testing the actual upload path, leaving headroom, and using a reliable connection; its guidance recommends upload capacity with about 20% headroom beyond the required stream bitrate. The effective requirement depends on the selected bitrate and whether primary and backup streams are being sent. See YouTube’s network and streaming tips.

Run an upload speed test on the connection that will actually carry the stream, then compare the result with the total outgoing bitrate rather than relying on the plan’s advertised download speed.

Prefer a stable network path and avoid saturating it with other uploads or heavy traffic while testing and streaming.

If you need wired networking, a compatible USB Ethernet adapter may be an option, but match the connector to your Chromebook and verify device compatibility. An adapter is not a fix for every network or service problem.

Watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators during the test. If they show instability, reduce the output bitrate or resolution, improve the connection, or use a cloud service whose outbound connection is separate from the home Chromebook connection.

Troubleshoot common problems
YouTube will not let the channel go live
Check channel verification, any live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and whether first-time activation is still pending. Activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the planned broadcast.
The Live Control Room shows no preview or an offline signal
Check that the selected YouTube stream URL and key were copied correctly into the service, that the correct scheduled stream is selected, and that the service has actually started sending. If the key may have been exposed or entered incorrectly, replace it in YouTube Studio and reconnect with the new key.
The stream health is poor or the picture buffers
Compare the actual upload capacity with the full stream bitrate and leave headroom. Test on the same connection and output settings, reduce bitrate or resolution if necessary, and check whether other traffic is consuming bandwidth. If a cloud service sends the stream, assess the service’s outgoing stream health as well as the local connection used to upload the archive.
The audio is missing, too quiet, or stops between episodes
Listen to a private or unlisted test from beginning to end, including the transition between files. Check the source files and the service’s playlist and looping settings; do not assume that a playlist will restart or handle gaps in a particular way without testing it.
The Chromebook cannot keep an unattended local setup running
ChromeOS is not a generally supported OBS platform, and a Linux container being available does not guarantee OBS compatibility. For an unattended broadcast, use a browser-based cloud workflow rather than treating a Chromebook-local encoder as dependable without testing the exact device, build, and setup.
The long livestream does not appear as a complete YouTube archive
YouTube says streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. Keep the source recording or a separate backup and use shorter sessions if YouTube’s archive is needed.
